I just reformated my laptop here. Its a nice laptop for what it is. Dell Inspiron 8100. Here are the specs. I never tried messing around with AH2 on it before because I figured it just didnt have the guts to be able to run it and run it so it was playable. But I was curious as to what would happen if I tried. So I installed DX9, went and found the latest video drivers and installed them. All seemed well and good but I still had little faith in the little system.
I downloaded a freash install of AH2. Opened it up and waited... Hit off line and to my surpise the thing was running smooth as silk. Almost too smooth for me to beleive. I had to jump in a plane and start bombinb a field to make smoke to see how much it would affect the performace. It slowed it down but it only dropped to around 38FRPS. PLAYABLE. On line factors have not been seen yet. I have yet to log in and see how it does in a furball.
(A Quick Run Down)
P3 1.2 Processor
NVidia Geforce2 Go Mobil 16MG YES THAT IS RIGHT 16MB
512RAM
Latest Nvidia Drivers found at dells web site
DX9
All sliders for performance are set at half way.
Max Texture Size is set to 128
800x600 res (Its runs just as great with higher res settings tho)
Take a look at avail vid memory. FRPS ect. Its nearly unbelievable. Too good to be true, but it is.
The reason I took the time to post this, is BECAUSE this.
I've been seeing alot of people get swawed away from Ah2 thinkin their systems can't run it. That they just dont want to bother with trying to run it because their computers just don't have what it takes. Well the facts are right in front of you guys and gals. I still have a hard time beleiving it and have to keep going back in to the game to play with this and that just to see what my limitations are. There are NONE what so ever.
I can do anything on this little lap top with a 15 inch LCD screen that I can with my desktop thats 10 times the system. (Im sure it has its limitations but the game is playable and I have not found any big set backs as of yet.)
Please guys dont give up or not try at all. You really dont know what your missing. Its lots of fun and seeing all the new things Ah2 has to offer, it really is like a whole new game.
If you have any other questions about settings or sys specs ask, I dont know if all that I listed is adequate to show you all that I have.

Here are some screen shots I took while on line... During which time I was being told by some that it was simply imposible to run AH2 on a 16MB video card.
First pic seems to be a little unclear. I think thats because I reduced the size of the picture.

It's not impossible, it just use the AGP bus a lot and give a peformance hit compared to a card that maintain all textures in it's local memory.
-
Your notebook's vid card has hardware T&L, that's why you are lucky to play it. :)
This was a high end notebook, when it was delivered.
-
straffo, you are incorect. By him setting his max tex size to 128 he lowere his vid memory requirements greatly.
HiTech
-
I'm confused  do you mean there is less trafic on AGP bus when text mem is set to 128 ?
(I should learn to shut up when not speaking of metrology and cmm :D)
-
I would bet, that AH2 is not using the ability to load texture into system RAM via AGB. Very few games are doing this, cause system RAM is much slower than vid card RAM.
So, the reason why he is able to play it with 16MB vid RAM is simply because the texture size by setting max texture size to 128x128 is small enough to fit into his 16MB available. :)
Remember, texture size increases exponentially. ;)
-
arggggggggggggggggggggg I got it now !
I thought it was a setting to allow 128 mb texture storage !
and not the texture size !

Yepp, pixels is the keyword. :D

looks like AHI to me........

Morph,
What happens when you fly close to the ground, as in attacking GV's? Are you able to see them outside icon range? That's got to be one of the toughest tests. LTARs are good enough shots that they don't need the advantage of invisibility.
-
hehehe cool isnt' it!
Now I can play AH2 in bed if i want to!:lol
-
looks like AHI to me........
Aparently you haven't payed attention in AH2 or just didnt bother looking at the screen shots. All that stuff at the top of the screen there. You see it? Thats all from AH2 bud. AH1 Doesnt show half that information.

Ask HiTech if this is AH2 terrain.... There isn't any other terrain like AH2 terrain in Ah1.
I dont know what your problem is nor do i care. Why you insist on calling me a liar is beyond me. You really dont have the right.

Saying this pic wasn't from AH2 when i said it was for one.
Saying it was 2-4 years old 2nd.
You really must have no clue... AH2 hasn't even been out for 2 years.

LOL!
I have one... She's in college, actually goes to same school as me. But she's a going to be a nurse and has a job at the Hospitol. Her hours are rediculous! Sometimes she'll be working there till 12:30 at night. Not to mention if she works a double shift. I've brought her breakfast many times there at 4 or 5 oclock in the morning.
The distance we will go for love:cool:

THANK YOU MAN...FINALY SOMEONE ON THE SAME WAVELENGH :aok
facts:
the AH2 screenshots you posted look like something from 00-02, not 2004
the plane textures are 100% the same as Ah1 in your pictures, due to you reducing quality so far. But even at max settings AH2 doesnt REALLY look much better than Ah1
the ground clutter didnt increase quality too much imo.......and even that looks blury

Overlag you are not thinking the way one should be thinking here. (dealing with the topic of discusion) After all of the players in here posting, saying how their systems wont run AH2 I figured I'd show them that even a weak one can run AH2 and be "PLAYABLE".
I've heard from many players is that you MUST have a 128mg video card or higher to run AH2. And how even then their systems dont run AH2 smoothly. Something is wrong here. That shouldnt be the case, and if it is for some then they need to take a look at their system and see if they are over looking certain things. Settings, Drivers, ect could be set wrong to make AH2 play rough.
Does my little laptop provide me with another way to play the game? Hell yes it does.
Does my little laptop provide me with all of the "Eye Candy" that a bigger, stronger system will provide me? Hell no it wont.
Are you honestly going to sit there and tell me that this...
.....is not playble? You couldnt live with that? For some I'm sure they'd be more than happy to know that they could play AH2 with out going though expencive upgrade with their systems. And that they would be alble to play on line with their squad mates and friends once AH2 takes over and goes on line in the finnal version. And that they wouldnt have to wait to upgrade to do so.
Remember what I am trying to show people here please.
That if I can do this with a 16mb GF2 video card, Pentium 3 1.2Ghz and 512 RAM then others still have hope of getting even better results.
-
Again, what is really not to like about this picture? Taking the specs of the system into concideration IMHO I think its perfectly accpetable.

he never said it was unacceptable or unplayable...he said it looks bad and like a old game...he has never said anything else than that...have you been taking lessons from laz on pulling stuff out of thin air or something?
-
Morph,
Thanks for posting. Several of my squadmates will be interested hear about your results. They may not get the promised eye candy but they can still play.

Actually in saying what I said I didnt' take anything out of context or pull it from thin air as you say.
I took what he said for face value giving him the beinifit of the doubt that he was being honest with what he said.
Should I have looked into what he meant in saying what he said? No.
Why?
Because if you going to take the time to write something, dont waste others time by writing garbage.
he said it looks bad and like a old game
WOW. I really have to learn how to read. I must have over looked this part where he directly said that. If you can show me where with out explaining things for him then I'd be more than happy to see.
-
Overlag,
It looks bad because he set the max texture size to 128pixels, half of what AH1 uses. Setting it that low makes it look bad, but it is playable.
If the texture size were set to 1024 then it would look good, but be unplayable.

My pleasure ChasR. This is all I hoped to accomplish from this.
Voricon and Overlag,
Do you see what I am trying to do here? Help people... And nothing more.
Not troll for some stupid pointless argument about what someone meant when they said something entirely different. Take it somewhere else please.

i just said it looks bad, you started the arguement ;)
but i see where your coming from now....
ie, you have counter strike, a 5 year old outdated game, vs farcry bran new, life like FPS game....which is the most popular in the WORLD???
the 5 year old one...
oh crap im going to hide :o :lol
hehe gj

Here is another test I did.
All of the settings are the same. But I Changed Max Texture Memory to 256.
As of right now the performance of the game is still the same. No bad laggy stutters or freezing ect.
The gain here is in graphics though. Which is a plus I'd say.

nope you pulled it out of context...he said it looks like ah1...you thought he meant it looks like it is ah1 and automaticly went out on a crusade to show him that it was ah2. (a understandable mistake)
.....is not playble? You couldnt live with that?
and thats where you really pulled something out of thin air...
he has simply been defending himself while you FAILED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WROTE PLAIN AND SIMPLE wich is THAT LOOKS LIKE ITS 2-4 YEARS OLD and even after saying it in about 5 different ways you still assumed that he meant it was from ah1...
and thats about where i stepped in to try and clarify what he was saying for you, it didnt work...
-
Another screen shot. Same settings as above. This time looking out towards open ocean. This is the least amount of strain on the system. (this view that is)

this has nothing to do with AH2 performance ...
on the text buffer..it shows "auto combat trimm off..auto combat trimm on..and then auto combat trimm off agian..in that paticular order... does this mean that there are times when one should use combat trim??...or is that "only" in aceshigh 2..where flight models are some what altered..from the original set in AH1?
whats the deal?? :)

anway good job with that...how did you lower the max texture size? i have a older card and some more fps would be nice...

Vort, click on (in this order)
-Setup
-Video
-Video settings
At the top you will see a drop down tab entitled "Max Texture Size"
Click on the arrow and you will see a selection to choose from. Select the size that you wish to use and click aply. Your planes will be reloaded and you can continue playing.
You can do this at any time in the game. I really like the way HiTech has set up his video settings. So that they can be manipulated and take change in flight.
-
Doo combat trim is used by what I would say the majority of the players in Aces High. Some dont use it. Fester is one. I sometimes turn it off. Many times while flying the P38 there is a need for trim at either High speeds or low speed turn fights. Fester has told me that 109s greatly benifit from the use of manual trim. And from the flying and fighting I've done with and against him I have to say he is right.
It is again just one venue of the game that you either hate or love, use or disregard.
-
your card simply is has T&L only reason why i cant run AH2 is cause i dont have AGP slot on my mobo.
-
Nice job, Morpheus. Very useful post.
Don't get too upset about the 2-year-old game comments, tho. I don't think they were that out of line, and they are entitled to their opinions too.

wrong, because T&L sucks with a 1ghz cpu.........:)

Ok guys... tried AHII on my brother-in-laws machine. Pentium III 600, 512Mb ram, Matrox G550 video card.
AHI
At the airfield with 4-5 other pilots around, medium settings at 128 texture size - 35fps.
AHI - in the main arena with 4-5 other pilots around, standard settings, 15fps.
Wow. DX9 rocks! :D

I was only getting agrivated because some were taking this post the wrong way.
I just want to show that the game can still be played and is able to be played on a very bare bones system.
To say, well that sucks, nothings clear there is no "eye candy" and it basicly looks like hell is just absurd. Keeping in mind that the system the screen shots were taken with isn't half that of others. One would think a sense of hope would be given to those who have yet to get AH2 to run well for them. For some it has. For others, they fail still, to see the points I am trying to convey.
Skull you are right. Some simply CAN'T play AH2. Their systems just wont run it and dont have what it takes to run it. Almost no system is like anohter. There are always exceptions and limitations to what a system can and cannot do.
Concidering that when I first loaded AH2 on that little system I had started out with a FR of ZERO. And managed to get it up to 50+ is remarkable. If you told me that it is posible to run AH2 on a system with a 16mb video card before yesterday I would have laughed and said the same things others have said to me. That is simply is impossible.
I am a firm believer in the saying, Two heads are better than one. If anyone can give me advise that may help me with a problem I am willing to listen. If not advise then show me some information that may be helpful.
-
Where'd you get that P51 gunsight, Morph? :D
-
lol thats the default P51 sight I do believe.
I dont really much like it to be honest. I think it covers up too much of the target. The one I use for nearly all of my planes have just 1 lil old red dot. I like that one the best :D
That one is there because I havent trasfered all of my settings over to my laptop yet. I just reformated last night as a result of an overwhelming amount of spywear, Hijackers ect. It just got to the point where no spywear removal tool would work. The only thing that worked well enough was poping in the XP disk and rebooting.

Here's me calibrating my pistol. Our skipper stresses marksmanship. So far I have shot out 127 canopy windscreens. My framerate is 17 offline with graphic settings maxed. Out of 262.5 megs of video memory I'm using 77.8. Same as when I'm flying and shooting out windscreens.
-
I am glad someone posted it. I tweaked AH2 on my friends machines all the way from a Celeron 466 to a P3 933. And of course you won't get really good graphics but with a setup like 16 meg card or on a celeron 466 your lucky to play any game. B17Skull12, I am confused are you saying AGP cards only support T&L? Most likely misread it, Haven't slept for a while pull double shifts at work.;)
-
(http://jollyrogers.info/CAG44/calpistLS.jpg)
Framerate shot up to 41 when I lowered the setting. I hit the target. Unfortunately it wasn't the target I was aiming at.
-
(http://jollyrogers.info/CAG44/sneakybastage.jpg)
Here's me sneaking over to my tent to shoot my room mate for snoring and keeping me awake last night .... sleep deprivation certainly must affect my marksmanship. You can't see the video feedback infor too well because I reduced the size of the pic. He wasn't there. I stole his cache of yoohoos and ding dongs.
p.s. - notice I'm wearing bedroom slippers as to not make noise.
-
(http://jollyrogers.info/CAG44/buried.jpg)
Here' me buried up to my neck next to the comm shack. The video setting is still blurry but it is still 41 frames ... trust me. I'm being punished for walking around with a loaded pistol off safety away from the shooting range without first saying "Skipper, may I?". I offered to share the Yoohoos and Ding Dongs and he merely confiscated them. Our skipper is a strict disciplinarian.
-
(http://jollyrogers.info/CAG44/calPT.jpg)
This is us calibrating a PT boat. For some reason the framerate dropped to 30.

LOL Arlo!
Good stuff man!:lol
