Title: Upgraded to XP Pro
Post by: DiabloTX on May 28, 2004, 01:19:45 PM
I got XP Pro as my anniversary present.  I upgraded my comp from Win2k Pro and my wife's comp has XP Home.

Any XP Pro users have any tips or tricks they can share?

Didn't ask for it, didn't want it but thanks for posting nonetheless.

I like Win2k but I like XP Pro much more.

to elaborate my pointless post :D i would like to say that i find 2k abit more stable, uses less "power" and feels abit less bloated. But hey...dont let me ruin your fine experience, it may be better for your puter :)

I havne't used win2k so I don't know if it's different in this way:

I had a hard drive that proved to be defective shortly after I installed it....when I went to back up some stuff, for instance my Eudora mail folder I went to c:/program files/eudora and backed up the whole directory....

When I had changed the hard disk and went to copy all my years of email...i found that the REAL eudora folder with my personal info and attachments etc. is in the c:/documents and settings/..under my personal login name...so I lost all the years of email...

The directory structure differs in this way (I upgraded from win98) to XP Pro.

XP Pro also has its own built in firewall (control panel/internet connection)

I find XP to very stable...I have never had a blue screen and only occasionally have a prog that hangs.

Thanks Silat. Had a couple I didn't! :)

BTW, here is the latest Spybot version that I've been using for the past several weeks. Last I saw it was not listed on thier website as it's essentially in beta.  But Ive yet to find a bug.

Hehe, was just having a little fun at your expense Nils, but you know that.

My experience has been progessively better.

95>98Se>2KPro>Xp Pro

Machine name: XXXXX
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: MSI
System Model: MS-6380E
BIOS: AMIINT - 10
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2100+,  MMX,  3DNow, ~1733MHz
Memory: 512MB RAM

I am hoping now that I can actually play AH again on my machine.  Have been using the wife's machine but she tired of me screaming at the monitor "%^$@&!@*&^$ Shane! Why is it always that guy that shoots me down?!?!?!?!?!?!"

Nope, never did.  Skuzzy and I went round and round and round with it and I finally gave up and used the wife's computer.

2K wasn't the problem though.

Wasn't saying that it was.  Never did find the culprit.  Wife's computer had 2K and it ran fine on it.

Initially it was a bad PNY video card (imagine that!!) but the system never did run AH, even after a clean install of Win2K, the SP's and driver swaps.

Hey Skuzzy, can I get DiabloTX as my call sign???

Can you believe it?  DL's a fresh install of AH, opened it, clicked on "Offline", then CTD like before.

You see that "Retired from AH" on my sig?  40% of that is due to work sched.  The other 60% is because I can't get it run on my machine.

You don't understand, it's HERS.  I bought it for her for Christmas and she's become very stingy with it.  I tried to use it for AH and I got yelled at.  She's Mexican.  When they get mad, they get MAD.  So, I leave her computer alone.  Unless there's problem...:D

Here's a question:

Hard drive                      =   80gb
Free space                     =   37.6gb
       checking properties.......
Windows folder             =   1.61gb
Program files folder       =   12.3gb
Documents folder          =   4.57g

I think that everything pretty much goes in those 3 main folders so where is the missing HD space?
The window folder seems light.

you're missing 20 gig???

*is it possible that the machine is reporting it in error?

I formatted it as a single partition.

I realized this recently because while I was uninstalling a few games to free up space it hit me "Wait, did I put in 40gb of stuff in here??" I DL, watch, and delete a lot of movies and anime. Swap games in and out a lot. Does page file(1028-2056mb) or System restore(2953mb) have anything to do with this mystery?
Guess I just have a crapload of ghost files somewhere

Using my ASUS PC Probe I get:
Used space   39,598mb
Free space    38,588mb

so there's 20gb or so being used somewhere

if you have Norton on your puter, you can use its defrag and right click on the 'drive map' to find out what file is what.

lost chain fragments can be huge...have you done a recent scandisk and deleted any found files?

agent news reader can have an enormous chache file (if you use it)

how long since you cleaned out IE cache?

your page file (or swap file) accounts for 2 gig, and the system restore accounts for another 3 gig

...in your shoes i would empty the cache directories and trash bin...then do a scandisk (delete any found stuff) and defrag

my brothers comp has xp pro on it. (I have home edition)

the only problem he has with it is that it refuses to recognize his modem for internet aces.  the modem is listed in the device manager as working, and it works fine for faxing.  but can't seem to locate the modem when trying to set up a dial-up account.

I tried to get it going for about 1/2 hour maybe, nothing to intense, and couldn't get it to work. maybe I just missed something.

since we are talking about xp-pro anyway, I figured I'd see if any of you knew why it might be doing this.

The only thing I know (from everybody) is that downloading the Service pack is not advisable.
Apart from that, windows Xp is just fine...

had that same problem....how resolved it was removing the fax/modem card and rebooting....during POST it will recognize the change...then after it loads windows...close down and reinstall the card into a different pci slot (the next available one) and then reboot again..it will 'find new hardware' and you can take it from there! good luck!

I upgraded to XP pro...I've never used home or win2k but I find XP pro a godsend compared to 98 SE.  I find now that its hard to work with 98 after using XP for so long.

I agree that it is a hog but I am impressed that it runs rather nicley still on my celeron 333 (my xp athalon board got fried)

After screwing around with a bunch of stuff, I'm up 53.8gb. Not to sure what I did but some Windows apps aren't working(WMP) or correctly(IE). Doesn't matter, I have way more media players than I need and Mozilla. Just in case I'll probably be burning my mp3's and whatever on some DVDs.
