Failed the state inspection today because of excessive tire wear. I tend to slide through the corners and it really chews up the tires. Any recommendations on some good mid-level tires?
1996 Camaro with alloy wheels. Right now I have 245/50-16's but I'd like to go back to 235's for now.

Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com)
Just went to BIG O' Tires and got the banana in the tail pipe for $20 extra a tire, but they were on in an hour, and the GTP is silent.

GOODYEAR GT EAGLES
Best Tire Made.
Will last a hell of alot longer than the WalMart brand "bargin" tires.

Hell, this looks good.
Kumho (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+HP4+716&vehicleSearch=true&partnum=16HR6HP4)

Eagles were originally installed IIRC. I'd like to have some neato raised white letter tires but they are very hard to find other than those you'd see on grandpa's Oldsmobile.

Not bad. But I need better snow traction, this is Houston after all!!

Thats what I replaced on a 2000 Pontiac GTP. I hit rain at 5,000 feet in Reno and about went from 395 to I 80 without an off ramp. So I went to BigO and just paid the money.
I got 2 for you Jester. $5 a peice, lotsa rubber, in Big 'O plasic bags. Saved me $6 bucks to junk em. Hell, come over, they are yours.

Green is fine if your going the speed limit. $50 is a deal.
Edit- Goodyear is 2X the cash. Up to you.
-
DiabloTX, check out Kumho tires. I realize it's not a well known name but read the reviews and surveys on Tirerack.com. They are for real. And ~$50 less than the name brands in the sizes you are interested in.

Damn I shoulda read the thread before posting. Those are the same tires I am running right now. Not as grippy as my old PZeros but they are quiet, have very nice steering and handling, and should last a lot longer. And they are @#$@#$ cheap. :)
-
And add $7-15 to balance and mount them unless Funkypants has a better solution.
-
PS I find Tirerack to be a great place to shop for tires, because of all the reviews/surveys/tests, but tires.com actually has stores that will install them for you. Price includes mounting, lifetime balancing & rotation.
-
Thanks, looks like I just may go with those. I have 14 days left to do my state inspection so shipping may be an issue.

Here's the link: http://www.discounttire.com/dtc/home.jsp

And I shoulda re-opened the Fat Gay Bastard AH BBS tire thread before I got raped at Big O, but i was in a hurry. I could have put on BF's for what I did on a cheaper brand. I'll go look, but I didn't do it right. Diablo is way ahead so far.

No shipping, price includes mounting/balancing/rotation as stated above. (http://www.discounttire.com/dtc/findTireProducts.do?step=products&productType=TIRE&sortOrder=Price&crossSection=235&aspectRatio=55&tireRimSize=16&plusSize=OE)
I was in and out of their shop in 30 minutes.
-
Just called my 2 closest Discount Tire stores and the Kumho's are special order only.

Well, I say if you have resources that know about things more than yourself, use them!

Bummer.
If you go with TireRack, they have a deal where you can have them shipped directly (drop shipped) to a local TireRack affiliated tire place, and they will give you pricing up front on mounting/balancing.

Tirerack like Funked said. I have the ES100 Yoko's and 15,000 miles later I'm very happy with them.
-
ES100 Yoko are pretty good.. I use the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 which is a costly high performance tire. But they stick like glue.
Try also hptire.net their pretty inexpesnsive as well.. they carry some odd brands that Tirerack doesn't.

I don't trust them, even when I give you the website, brand, and price.
Wait till I tell you about my DVD burner newegg.com had for $5 less and two day shipping.

Potenza's are nice, but I've heard from the BMW community that they track quite a bit on older (50,000 or more) suspensions (Is that the right word? Track? you know, touchy on the front end when you hit those depressions in the asphalt on freeways, particulary the right lane where Semi's travel...most if not all of this behavior is due to worn ball joints but sticky tires tend to bleed this problem obvious)
The ES100's are a cheaper alternative ($107 per for my car) if you're just commuting, they're priced right for their respective performance but they don't match up to the biting grip of Potenza's.
My biggest complaint about my tires are "under 10mph on new road" sound, its a low rumble thats quite audible...however it disappears after 10 mph.
-
Keep in mind that Bridgestone uses "Potenza" on about 50 different tire models.
-
Anyone else think that Ford's new GT commercial is the best commercial ever?
Watching it slide through those turns...man...getting excited just thinking about it. And that's why I had to start this thread in the first place...
-
Not really. But then if I'd a spent $40 a peice more on Bridgestone's, I pry would, if that helps.
I'm the type that would rev up the engine next to Laz, and look at him all mean and junk, then when he spun out his tires and sped off and over a cliff, I'd go up the on ramp at 45mph and go to work.

Yokohama ES100s rock. I've had a set on for about 10k miles now. Outstanding grip, low noise, and they're very predictable. You can push right to the limit and know exactly what they're going to do.
-
If ya need new tires and you're on a budget, I suggest going to Pep Boys. Their Futura tires are made by Kelly/Springfield and they are great!

I was going to go back and edit Potenza to "S-03" but I didn't think anyone was going to be that anal over it. :)
-
Yok ES100 is my recommendation too. Have a set on the S2000...not quite as sticky as the original Bridgestone S-02, but alot cheaper for street driving.
I like cheaper since I just can't seem to get more than 8-10k miles out of a set of rear tires before they are corded. I dunno, maybe I drive to aggressively...naaaah. :D

Shop for anything decent on sale.
Last year I put 4 Goodyear Aquatreads on my Ford Aerostar, with an alignment, ballancing, old tire disposal, etc for $252.

I have been known to kill a tire or two.
Dunlops are a very good comprimise. Soft enough for traction and if you drive hard they last about as long as the hard tires. Goodyears turn into funeral pyres on the back of my cars.. Goodrich is ok.
-
I finally got the Kumhos out on some twisties tonight. There were too many deer out so I took it easy, but I still was able to lean on them in a few spots. I'm pretty impressed. They aren't as much of a dropoff from the PZeros as I expected. Definitely better than the Potenza RE92's the car came with. Makes me wonder if they will last very long. But damn, for $70 each mounted & balanced, they rock.
