Title: F-15 fly-over
Post by: WilldCrd on May 31, 2004, 02:19:19 PM
Was out in the front yard and 2 pairs of F-15's just flew over doing mach 1+ and armed to the teeth. they were pretty low cause i could see all the air to air missles. Wonder if somthings up.
BTW no airshows in my area and nearest base is NAS/joint reserve in Ft. Worth about 40 miles away.

pretty cool.....I used to see a lot of that from Luke AFB. Steve lives real close to the base, I bet he sees F-16's and F-15's everyday.

But I doubt the ones you saw where going above Mach.

When I was a kid, I used to skip school sometimes just to go to Luke and watch the planes land. I remember the Germans had some f-104's that they where being trained in, also F-4s

Ahhh, youth.

Has to be a memorial service or somthing in the area.  We send our planes all over california for games and parades and such.

I seriously doubt they were goin mach in that area.  I dont recal any sonic cooridors near there

If they were doing MACH 1 you'd have heard a sonic boom.  We hear them here everyday and I can assure you'd have known if they did it.  Plus they won't do it that low do to the fact it will shatter windows and ear drums if done at low altitudes over populated areas.

They were most likely headed to an airshow somewhere or a fly by at some event.  As Gunslinger has stated we do this alot with our F-15s here.

BTW how many missiles were loaded and on what areas?

The reason i said Mach 1.....heard the sonic BOOM! Pretty good indication of them being over Mach 1. And yes i heard more than one

Yup. If they were hypersonic this low, your ears would still be ringing and your house would be windowless...

It happened from time to time in Belgium when I was a young kid (belgian Mirages if I'm right) and they scared the hell out of me. Our windows weren't broken because they were doing it at high alt, but they passed low over towns on a couple of occasions and boy the population (bar the windows installers) was p!ssed!!!

WilldCrd I'd have to take a look but I'm not sure there is a SS cooridoor in that area.  If they were low level and broke the sound barrier your houses windows would have been blown out.  We break the sound barrier here at Edwards on a daily basis at alts of 20,000 ft or more.  Even then with these alts it shakes everything on the ground.  If they were any lower they would be blowing out windows and such all over the base and the towns around us.

It could have very well been another bird higher up that hit the barrier.  Anything low enough to tell they had a full weapons load onboard would indicate they are extremely low and a SS run at that alt would be devistating for folks on the ground.  We had an incident in Spain where a crew broke the sound barrier below 8 thousand feet and shattered a massive amount of windows in the town they flew over.

cobra  long time no see online....my good MB is fried so I havnt been flyin lately.

He's right....Edwards anual bill for Sonic Boom damage in the surrounding area tops 500K each year and those are Hi Alt runs.

Some days we have about 2 or 3 somtimes we have 2 an hour.  I've even heard them as late as 9 PM.  They scare the hell out of my dogs and kids.

Funny story...when we are together as a family and we hear one me and my wife try to smile and yell BOOOOOOM to help get the kids used to them   ( 2 and 4 years old )

I've had half the screens on my house fall off from them befor and again those are HI ALT 20k

Cobra taker easy bro and keep them cockpits clean and FO free

Willdcrd I had a B1 and B2 fly formation over my house before at less than 1k.  Was one of the coolest things I've seen in a while.

Big cockpit....less chance for FO LOL

I was in my first 52 a couple weeks ago and it was rolled off the assymbly line in 1964.  It was an amazing piece of machinery.  To think that this thing stood watch against the commie threat 20 years ago and is STILL flying....just amazing.

Dont worry though falcon keeps us twice as busy as you guys....and that's not to be taken as a chalenge :)

lmfao @ Gunslinger don't want it to be a challenge huh?  But then again I've heard about some of the stuff that happens in Falcon.  It would not suprise me one bit.

I grew up in NE cali in the sierra nevada mt's, used to hear sonic booms and have low fly by's all the time.  The Herlong army depot just across the valley had the largest open pit ammo demos in the us 10k lbs at a time.  Even though it was 30 miles away you could clearly see the fire ball and about 40 sec later the boom shook the windows, this was done 10-15 times a day 5 days a week.

When i was in the navy we were "attacked" several times by 2 F-5's with sensor pods containing the new guidance system for our new asm missiles. They came in at mach 1+ from several directions at 50-100 meters alt.....very very cool :) Didnt really think much about it, cause its pretty normal airdefence training for us and antisihip training for the pilots. Later we found out that the planes were not flown by their pilots, but by the pods containing the asm guidance system....glad i didnt know that when they came in

Can a F-15 with external stores and full fuel go Mach 1 at sea level?  That's a question, not a comment.

Lol, when i was in the army, 2 trainer Hawk jets flew horizontal 50-100 meters from my coastal observation point at same level (40 meters), felt like crapping my pants as i didnt notice them until the soundwaves catched me. Nice prank, they prolly had some yelling, as the other controllers werent so hot about the incident. :lol
