I didn't think this was possible...Any Army guys care to chime in please?

Yes, it's true. It's been done in the past also. They did it for Desert Storm. Specific shortage MOS's were hit with stop loss last year, now they are targeting all personnel in units set to deploy. Usually it means a year or so of additional service. I'm lucky, getting out next Tuesday and don't see anything stopping me yet...*crosses fingers*

Good luck, and thanks for the info!
.
Thank you for your service, too :aok

some guys would know more about it than me (so correct me if I'm wrong. but IIRC when you sign up you sign up for 8 years. you may only sign on for 3 years active duty. but even if you've been discharged you can be called back or made to postpone your discharge until that 8 years is up.
-
Different time and service, but similiar affect.
My Uncle flew B-24's in WWII and then went into the reserves.
He had a nice job flying for an Oil company and was yanked back to active status when SAC was formed. He flew B-47's longer than he wanted to.

Stop Loss is across the military as a whole. Here in the AF we've been hit with stop loss quite a few times since I've been in. It only affects a set of career fields. Typically it affects all directly related to the aviation side of the house, special forces, security forces, and a few other areas. Basically if your not directly in the whole combat scenario then you might not be affected. I've seen atleast 30 folks in the past get stop lossed the day before they were bound to get out.
Capt Apathy it use to be that way and still might be. I've never really checked into it since I'm past that time and have been for a few years. Technically they can still call you after that 8 year mark but you don't have to go if you don't want to. Prior to that 8 years they can and will recall you if they need to. If you don't respond then your punishable under the UCMJ for failure to show/AWOL.

Capt. I did 5 years active duty was a civilian for 11 months and had less than 2 years left on my IRR time....
Nov. 15th 2001(5 days after proposing to her) my then fiance calls me at work and says "you got a fedex package from the Marines" I rush home on my lunch break and open it and it says:
Sgt. XXXXXXXXXXXXXX you are hearby recalled to active duty under presidential order xxxxx in direct support of operation: "eduring freedom". You are hearby directed to report to MCB Camp Pendleton, CA No later than 2359 27 Nov 2001" Bla bla bla bla
I had been a civilian for 11 months just started an awsome job and a family and they gave me 12 days to go back to being GI Jarhead. Yes.....It happens!
As far as a stoploss when you sign an enlistment contract it says you are required to fufill you time or the time of a national conflict plus 6 months. It also says they can recall you from the IRR (individual ready reserves) for the duration of the conflict plus 6 months.
Technically if there was a war that lasted 50+ years they wouldnt have to release you
just fyi

...which is exactly why I stayed the hell away from the reserves when I got out. Didn't want to risk a return to service.

sand I never thaught it would happen untill sept 11th

Had a few friends recalled because of Desert Storm. When I got out, I had no interest in becoming involved in the next 3rd world skirmish.
Now... If I got out in 2000 or 2001, I might have been of a different mindset than I was in 1991.

I got 10 years active and 4 reserve....after next Tuesday they can't touch me :) It can't get here fast enough. I figure one trip to the big sandbox is enough.

Selective Stop Loss has been going on for a while now. I knew of people that had their retirements delayed due to stop loss. I know of others that were held past their ETS (End of Term of Service) due to the war. It happened in Gulf War I and has happened for Gulf War II. They haven't pulled a universal stop loss where no one from a certain career field can get out but that can happen, if needed.
The next step generally is to call back folks on IRR. Guys on IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve) are people that either hadn't served their total military obligation or elected to stay on IRR in case they needed to be called back. While people think they join for three or four years in reality you join for eight, the rest of the time you spend on IRR. It does count towards retirement and some folks elect to stay on IRR for that reason.
The third step is a draft. This would be real unpopular but they may do it selectively-call up the doctors and other specialists they think they might need. I wouldn't see that, yet but who knows.
After 19 years in the Army I have seen just about everything.

It's too bad we can't draft illegal immigrants and send them to Iraq. And homeless bums, too. Of course they'd never pass a drug test, but I'd rather send derelects to war than our children.

The incentives would probably be costly.

I wonder if they can keep it manned with 'stop loss' until after the election?
I assume thats the goal, if Bush wins in november he won't be eligible for another term anyway. so he wouldn't have to concern himself with votes lost by bringing back the draft.
If he gets re-elected, I would expect a draft to be going or at least in the works before spring.
-
yep, its happening again. even my old friends that are still in the Inactive Ready Reserves are getting called back up. these are problems caused by the infamous Rumsfield Plan "Vision 2010". he started the massive cutbacks, reducing the active army to 10 divisions, heck he wanted to have 8 divisions. well here we are, all over the world and not enough soldiers to go around.

Why not train our criminals to become soldiers? Straighten em out, give them an opportunity to use weapons (again) and we can use the prison space for casinos, rodeos, strip clubs and Shopping Malls.
I kinda believe that a well trained drill sgt. can break anyone down over 13 weeks :)
:D

We've done that before, Native American men were granted automatic US citizenship if they joined the US Armed Forces in WW2
