Mustang Pilot Dies Of Injuries
During an air show on Saturday, pilot Don Hinz was performing a fly-by in a Commemorative Air Force (CAF) P-51C Mustang when he reported a problem. Unable to return to the field, Hinz managed to avoid nearby houses and power lines, but the aircraft hit the ground hard, and both wings were torn off. Hinz died Sunday of his injuries. The accident took place during the Wings of Freedom Airshow at the Red Wing Regional Airport in Minnesota. Hinz, 60, of Woodbury, Minn., had played a major role in the fundraising, educational, restoration and outreach programs of the P-51C Mustang, and had worked to bring the aircraft and the message of the Tuskegee Airmen to the public, the CAF said in a news release. The P-51C Mustang was based out of Fleming Field in South Saint Paul, Minn., and operated by the Minnesota Wing of the CAF. Hinz was a retired Naval aviator and a former airline pilot for Braniff and Sun Country Airlines. He leaves a wife and four sons. The CAF, based in Midland, Texas, operates a fleet of over 150 World War II aircraft, and has two other P-51 Mustangs in its collection. On Tuesday, CAF spokeswoman Tina Corbett told AVweb it was not clear if the aircraft could be repaired.

Damn...! May he RIP.

Poor guy

Don Hinz

someone crashed a plane about 2 miles from my house last week. pilot died, no one else hurt.
-
Yeah, Don Hinz did quite a bit of vintage aircraft flying for calendars and stuff. Its a shame he's gone but it sounds like he did the right thing in avoiding hurting anyone on the ground. I hope they rebuild the aircraft to at least a static display condition.

I knew the guy, knew the plane......totally sucks, to put it nicely...
According to the people I know in St. Paul, The aircraft cannot be repaired. At best, it will be pieced together and donated to the D-Day Museum :( , or transported there in its current condition...
I'm proud to say I shook the man's hane, and got a close-up and personal view of the bird many times...hence my Avatar...

GD bad time to be flying vintage WW2 aircraft it seems.. wow
dude

Maybe they should reduce the numbers of non-paid non-qualified volonteers that maintain those planes.
-
Maybe you ought to go down to the local CAF hangar and meet some of those "non-paid non-qualified volonteers that maintain those planes".
Their dedication and qualifications would probably humble you. Might even make you edit that post.

punt...

non really, I have been around Chino Air Museum and other WB associations. What I noticed is that a selected few are amazing, but HAVE To delegate to other volonteers. Other volonteers that take their task very seriously but definitly lack experience.
I eard it myself something like: "We don't have time to train them as good as we should, but we need thier labor and dedication".
Goes same with some remanufactered parts they use in the planes, as cost is always a predominant issue.
Get exited all you want behind your keyboard Toad, I based my feeling from what I eard from the persons I met there.

Rip....
Is a P-51 C like the B or the D?

Was this the plane?

Wasn't this the only B/C flying?
-
I lived down in texas for 7 years then moved north in the mid-80s....I went to quite a few of the airshows and somewhere I still have a brochure the CAF put out for a show in Denton.
Unless they changed their Name I have always know the CAF as the Conferedate Air Force....and I met Don at Round Rock.

I think thay had to chance to Commemorative because of the "racial descrimination" implied by the word "Confederate".

They'll always be the Confederate Air Force to me...

I base my feeling on being in the CAF, helping the CAF fly and maintain my airplane and the unit airplane, attending airshows at other CAF units, seeing how other units maintain their aircraft and associating with this organization over the last 15 years.
From my actual experience, I'd say you basically don't know what you're talking about.

Any historicaly signifigant plane with less then 3 full versions in existance should not be flown. Course I dont think there should be fighting in hockey either. So what do I know.
Sad loss both man and plane.

Was thinking the same thing... I cant believe "someone" made them change it. Talk about PC gone wrong...
RIP, thank you for your service Mr. Hinz.
-
The "name change" thing was REAL simple.
FINA is the major "free" supplier of avgas to the CAF. They donate huge amounts, especially for the "Airsho" every year in Midland.
Fina was subjected to outside pressure because they supported something "Confederate". Their board decided they didn't need the grief and informed the CAF that they couldn't support it but hinted that a name change could make them change their mind.
We all voted. There were three choices in the vote, Commemorative won. I think it was because we didn't have to change the initials. ;)

Thanks Toad,
Makes sense...and my condolences to the loss of one of your squadies. <>

The P51C is the P51B, its just built at the NA plant in Dallas, Texas.

Frenchy,
Your comments are soooo typical of "wanna be" warbird pilots with around a thousand hours... You spend a day or two hanging around at a fly in, or going to a museum, and the next thing you know, you're an expert. I'll tell you what, I have been building, restoring, and maintaing WW2 aircraft for around 12 years. I am considered an expert in the field, but guess what, I don't know it all. I do maintenance with the manual out, I build and restore according to drawings and SRM and when those don't cut it, my 4313 is not too far away, nor is the phone to call the DAR. So, I suggest you stick to what you know, which in this case is little, and stick to doing walk around inspections on the 150's and Katanas you fly... and leave the real iron to those that know what the shreck they are talking about.

Chill ponyboys chill.
I am happy that you two are so confident about all your co-workers. I'll sleep beter tonight knowing that planes will stop falling out of the sky from "sudden" engine failures, or that landing gears will stay extended when it shows 3 green lights.

As I am happy that your attitude will never get you anywhere....
other than flying for Haul-alotta-freight.... and you think the CAF's maintenance is bad.... lmfao.... better learn a few more skills besides arrogance and pompousness... cause your gonna need it.
