Title: How France is celebrating D-Day
Post by: gofaster on June 03, 2004, 09:17:25 PM
Another gem from AvWeb.  Makes perfect sense to safeguard the area.  No, this isn't a troll.  Just wanted to pass along.

France To Remember D-Day By Shooting Down Private Pilots?
French officials have said they will shoot down private pilots who stray into restricted airspace during this weekend's 60th anniversary D-Day events in Normandy, the Daily Telegraph reported Monday. At least 16 heads of state and 1 million visitors are expected to attend the ceremonies. The region will be protected by an array of radar installations, AWACs aircraft on patrol, remote-controlled drones, two squadrons of Mirage 2000 fighters, lots of anti-aircraft missiles, 50 military helicopters, 9,000 troops, 10,000 police, at least two aircraft carriers offshore, plus an unknown number of submarines. Our advice: Don't fly in that airspace. Organizers said they are guarding particularly against an al Qaeda attack from the air. Tuesday, the entire country was put on "red alert," the second-highest tier in their terror-alert scale.

Good for them!

There have been some good shows on television the last few days about D Day including the rememberances at St Mere Eglise.  Very moving the way the French there remember the liberation and the troops that came.

One show on featured the 507th P.I.R. and the return of some of the vets to that area.  It was very touching.  The locals treated them like Kings.  Salute to those vets, and the French who are treating them so well.

We have balance. I'm probably too old to be a liberal, and you are far far too young to be a conservative. ;)

RAFALE M is a nice looking bird and alot more aircraft for carrier operations but it just doesn't have the "class" of the old F-8 CRUSADER's. Got to be my favorite carrier jet.

Too bad about the Mirage 2000's - read somewhere they are getting kind of "Long in the Tooth" and need replaced.

They implied like the French had "at least 2" CVs, we can barely put one afloat:D

On a side note, anything to protect the event is good. even with all that, i'm sure terrorists can find a way, if they really want to.

Hey now, I love to tease the French, but I hardly think this is the thread for it.  Hijacking is one thing, but on the 60th anniversary of D-Day, it would be nice, and appropriate to instead just agree that for once we should ignore the chain yanking and remember the fallen.

The French are showing respect and maybe even gratitude for the young men who came so far from their homes to fight for freedom and gave their lives.

I thank the French for this.

I wish I could tell you a story about the VA sec. and Air France last week.  Would change you mind about the "red carpet."  French Diplomacy at it's best.

one of your pilots maybe out of a job.  Of course we could always depend on the Germans to get him out in time.  Pretty ironic really.  Air france bringing Vets over for the cermonies, and snubbing the VA sec - ouch.

How the expression of one French citizen represent the whole French Nation ?

To make a comparaison it would like if I though the US poster of the O'club represent the average US citizen.

I would be stupid.

You are right, but Air France's name will stick out because of him.  No different for me, working for the US Govt. here in Europe, Abu Gahrib prison - I've never been there, get my point.

you mean the name?  Naw, something I picked up in the service.  While part of the cadre at a school in Little Creek.  I would call some of the more motivated boots "Studmonkeys" or "Studmonks".  I then received the name "Monk"  from some of the other instructors.

I get it.
Btw having the technical hability to be a pilote should not been confused with being a member of humanity.

I work daily with some coding genius who have the social life of a oyster.

I didn't go for one reason : I have to childs to youngs (2 and 4)  to support a complete day on this area  plus they're both a little sick :( (some kind of flue nothing to worry about).

Plus I've a lot more occasion to go to the beach area than only the 6.

C-Span had great coverage.  Parade, Fly-by and Naval Review.

I love C-Span, they just show the pictures and there's no Taking Heads like Jennings or Rather telling you what they think it means..
