By this time, regardless of the political implications - its pretty obvious to me that at some point within the next 6-12 months we're going to have a draft reinstated. My question to the Vietnam generation is do you have to be enrolled full time in school or part time to make the exemption?

The deferments will assuredly be somewhat different than they were 30-35 years ago, these are the ones currently posted by the U.S. Gov. but as you know, they can be changed at any time
Classifications
Men are not classified now. Classification is the process of determining who is available for military service and who is deferred or exempted. Classifications are based on each individual registrant's circumstances and beliefs. A classification program would go into effect when Congress and the President decide to resume a draft. Then, men who are qualified for induction would have the opportunity to file a claim for exemptions, deferments, and postponements from military service. Here is a list of some, though not all, classifications and what they mean:
1-A - available immediately for military service.
1-O Conscientious Objector- conscientiously opposed to both types (combatant and non-combatant) of military training and service - fulfills his service obligation as a civilian alternative service worker.
1-A-O Conscientious Objector - conscientiously opposed to training and military service requiring the use of arms - fulfills his service obligation in a noncombatant position within the military.
2-D Ministerial Students - deferred from military service.
3-A Hardship Deferment - deferred from military service because service would cause hardship upon his family.
4-C Alien or Dual National - sometimes exempt from military service.
4-D Ministers of Religion - exempted from military service.
Student Postponements - a college student may have his induction postponed until he finishes the current semester or, if a senior, the end of the academic year. A high school student may have his induction postponed until he graduates or until he reaches age 20. Appealing a Classification - A man may appeal his classification to a Selective Service Appeal Board.

As I understand it wolf, there are no exemptions anymore. You can finish your semester (i believe) or term, and then you go. Starts with 18 year olds and works it's way up. If the draft does come...I'm taking my CFII/MEI ratings and college degree to the air force for a few years. I just hope I can knock out my last semester and a half before they decide to bring the draft.

Does anyone else think that the draft is going to re-instated in the USA?
-
Nope.
Not gonna happen. No one is willing to commit that kind of political suicide.
-
I sorta agree with you MT, but how long can they keep drawing down on the Guard before the decision has to be made?

Oh, I'm just a typical American boy from a typical American town
I believe in God and Senator Dodd and a-keepin' old Castro down
And when it came my time to serve I knew "better dead than red"
But when I got to my old draft board, buddy, this is what I said:
Sarge, I'm only eighteen, I got a ruptured spleen
And I always carry a purse
I got eyes like a bat, and my feet are flat, and my asthma's getting worse
Yes, think of my career, my sweetheart dear, and my poor old invalid aunt
Besides, I ain't no fool, I'm a-goin' to school
And I'm working in a DEE-fense plant
I've got a dislocated disc and a wracked up back
I'm allergic to flowers and bugs
And when the bombshell hits, I get epileptic fits
And I'm addicted to a thousand drugs
I got the weakness woes, I can't touch my toes
I can hardly reach my knees
And if the enemy came close to me
I'd probably start to sneeze
I'm only eighteen, I got a ruptured spleen
And I always carry a purse
I got eyes like a bat, and my feet are flat, and my asthma's getting worse
Yes, think of my career, my sweetheart dear, and my poor old invalid aunt
Besides, I ain't no fool, I'm a-goin' to school
And I'm working in a DEE-fense plant
Ooh, I hate Chou En Lai, and I hope he dies,
Onething you gotta see
That someone's gotta go over there
And that someone isn't me
So I wish you well, Sarge, give 'em Hell!
Kill me a thousand or so
And if you ever get a war without blood and gore
I'll be the first to go
Yes, I'm only eighteen, I got a ruptured spleen
And I always carry a purse
I got eyes like a bat, and my feet are flat, and my asthma's getting worse
Yes, think of my career, my sweetheart dear, and my poor old invalid aunt
Besides, I ain't no fool, I'm a-goin' to school
And I'm working in a DEE-fense plant
I love that song.

Yeah... I don't have anything planned, but we can hook up sometime. You can come out to the house if you'd like.
Also, I'm working downtown these days, let me know where you are staying, and maybe we can hook up during the week.

Whew, g'thing Canadas close! j/k :D

I don't figure on the draft either. As long as the military is still manpower capped a draft would be counter productive.
-
If there is one dont plan on getting into the Air Force. The USAF is now 24K overmanned. Not only are they drawing down they are also reducing the number of new recruits.

Here's an interesting question: since women are now considered the equal of men in all military roles if there is a draft will women be included?

<- doesnt have to worry.... only male child

Won't happen...Besides..Canada has enuff people. Probably 50% of the eligable male population would be leaving the US to invade them for a nice safe quiet place to lay low.
Why draft a bunch of weenies that don't want to be there for ANY reason anyway. All they'll be is trouble and probably get some killed that wanted to be there. Americas Youth IMHO for the most part couldn't fight a cold. Much less someone trying to kill em. Youth of today don't have the same moral values as the youth of yester year.
Barring a full scale World War...No politician has the nuts to bring it back either. So it's all IMHO again...a mute point.
Volunteer Military is best way to go...Mainly because if they Volunteer..they have no room to gripe. Again only MY OPINION.:(
P.S. I think we should have one BTW. But I'm in a very very small minority.

they aren't require to register, so if they aren't registered the chance of them being selected is slim

Doesn't sound like equal opportunities to me...

women get equal oportunity, just not equal responsibility.

I don't believe you can have one without the other.

Is that a valid out? Or just urban myth?
And just out of curiousity. what reasons are there for rejection from the military these days?
Not concerned for me as I would proudly go in a New York Minute. But for my son who is far more the brainiac then the physical type and doesnt strike me as the type that you just know would walk away without a scratch If he were a footsoldier.
But he is the only boy and last male in my family other then me.
I was thinking if it came to it the airforce. but now I hear thats not a viable option. Second choice would be the navy.

Hmmm sounds like grounds for a lengthy legal battle to me.

RedTop, while i agree that youth in general are alot less respectful, there are still a great many who are respectful and could fight more than a cold, alot of them are doing it rightnow in iraq and Afghanistan.
Id bet there are more willing and able to fight then there are not.
Still agree with you, it amazes me how some of them act etc. Some really make me wonder.
