Reading throught the Sporting News today.. a particular stat caught my attention...
Tampa population: 313,600
Calgary population: 922,315
Tampa murders in 2003: 41
Calgary murders in 2003: 10
What's the story here? Why such a disparity?

Delve deeper into the population demographics of who is doing the murders in each city... it is staggering! :(

Have any of you ever seen a Stanley Cup Final series live? Bodhi, have you gone to see the Avs?
Tis for me the most exciting game in the world!

the population of Toronto is between 4 and 5 million ppl (of all ethnic backgrounds)...and we average around 50 murders annually.

Had season tickets... maybe next year, had season tickets in TPA many years ago, and used to go watch Canadiens play because it was close to where I grew up.
I do agree, it is the most exciing game too...

My question is why did sutter whine about being a small market team? Tampa is a smaller market then calgary.
-
Today its all about the AHL for me. Milwaukee is going to win the Calder Cup today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

I blame readily available drugs.
Its no secret that the drug pipeline runs through Florida's major cities before heading north to New York for distribution throughout the northeast.
I also blame public housing that lacks air conditioning in a hot and humid climate. People can't sleep, so they get whacked on drugs and go kill somebody. Crime rate goes way up during the Summer months here.
edit: Oh, and another thing - a highly transient population.

calgary is on a drug pipeline, almost everything coming from bc and the us heads through there first. not to mention the incredible speed problem alberta is having at the moment...i put it down to people with money for said readily available drugs.

It's a good question. I can't come up with any understanding as to 'why' either.

Its the guns.. they are so well armed in canada compared to the USA... I mean, how are you going to murder someone you know has a gun?
O, wait... I had it all wrong.. They dont use guns in Canada, they use hockey sticks! Its very hard to murder with a hockey stick.. Like, when was the last time you tried sneaking up on someone w/ a hockey stick in your hand?? Its hard to say the least.. Even if you can get close enough without your plan being fowled, you have to 'one time' them just right or else someone checks you to the ground or your shot is blocked..
I'm not concerned with which team wins the cup... I just cant wait to see the game! hehe This series has been GREAT! It's shown great hockey! My favorite part about these two teams playing is that both have an offensive style of play. They are built to score not to sit back and play defensive hockey and win with a score of 1-0... These teams make for some great hockey. But reguadless who wins this year, this series is very good for hockey.. Two relativly small payrole teams with awesome offensive potential! Just what the sport of hockey needs!

ps.. gawd I wish my team was in it though.. lmao

Almost all of the murders in Canada are from the hockey stick. We have made it a clear choice over hand guns. It was only last night when two heavily armed thugs with goalie sticks held up a popular 7-11 killing 9 and fleeing on mo-peds. A massive dog sled search is underway for the perpetrators.

agreed....the offence and speed are what make for a very exciting game ( I wish the Maple Leafs would pick up on this ) Gonna be a great finish; Looking forward to it!

Some ethnic groups are far more likley to kill then others. Where canada has a higher % of certain ethnicities it has much higher murder rates then is typical for the country. Where the US has lower % of those ethnicities it has comparable murder rates to Canada. Moore wouldnt touch that of course.
PS we lock our doors in canada. Keeps the racoons out.

I say the game winner tonight will be decided by 1 of 2 folk... Iginla or Richards.. If one of them scores, their team will win.. If the odd chance of both of them scoring, gawd knows. lol
Cant wait!
Post your score predictions!
I say the score will be 4-3.. dunno winner.. haha

It's tough to pull a trigger when wearing mittens, and its all those sumbeeches coming over from St Pete that are causing all the problems.

Were those muders committed with guns out of curiosity?...the ones in Tampa, obviously. The ones in Calgary we have already confirmed were committed with hockey sticks.

Lived in Tampa for 7 years, in a word it's the "Poverty"
Most of the murders are Black on Black and drug crime related (when I say most I mean over 50%).
I don't think gun laws would have stoped many of them as many of the crimes were commeted by fellons and they are not allowed to have a gun.
Oh well the game should be good
Go T.B.:D
-
Black on Black crime.. But you probably knew that answer...
Its really sad to me how many black communities have disintegrated since the civil rights movement finally gave these long suffering communities great opportunties and made great strides towards equal protection under the law..
Bill Cosby said the truth... Too bad many wont take the responsibility up on themselves now..
Thats the only way to seriously overcme any effects of racism or prejudice.. Personal responsibilty, community strenght, a focus on the family and hard individual work to meet your own decent goals..
The chinese have done.
The Irish have done.
The Italians have done.
The Japanese have done it.
Mexicans are doing it now.
The people from India are doing it now.
But many black communities have not taken up the challenge, instead they seem to hope for some magical solution from somebody else and their "leaders" just ***** and whine for more government help, all the while blaming outsiders for the majority of the problems.
-
I think another reason for the disparity was that we had never won a Stanley Cup, so we killed each other out of frustration. Now that we have it, our felony crime rate should go down.

Any bets that Tampa carries on the fine new tradition of the winning night riot?

was in Vancouver in 94, otherwise tell me the other in this so called tradition. I might be wrong but dont remeber anything since then.

FWIW, I think it's more of a collegiate tradition. :)

No, it's the blizzards and the icepacks. How can you murder somebody if it's too damn cold to go outside 11 months out of the year?? FWIW I'll bet Calgary had more INDOOR murders than Tampa did.

If the Habs get within smelling distance of the Cup you can be sure that there will be a riot in Montreal, win or lose.

Tampa didn't riot when the Bucs won the Superbowl, and I doubt they are rioting tonight.
WTG Bolts! :)

not necessarily; when my family or friends decide to go on one of our murderous rampages, we drink some strong canadian beer to keep warm, then grab our weapon of choice, the hockey stick, and wear white snow suites to become virtually impossible to track in the blowing snow. The trail of corpses is not even discovered untill the spring thaw.

No riots after the victory last night. We're saving our rioting for the Jennifer Porter case.

I think a bunch of ppl from tampa "murdered" a bunch of ppl from Calgary last night, maybe not physically , does that count :)

What the heck difference does the colour make? Black on black, white on white, it's still American on American.
It's not like you can say, "Well, they're black so we get a mulligan.".

I never said that. so DON'T put words in my mouth, pal
You are the one with an agenda!
You really want the only difference to be guns, well it's not, sorry.
I can only say you would need to spend some time here and experience the gangs and the drug culture to even get a clue.
The problem is systemic and deep routed, in a culture and generation and has no chance of being solved with or without gun laws.
I am continually amazed by people who MAY have visited the US on vacation thinking they know us and understand all aspects of the US diversity. These same people like to think the application of thier way of life would solve everything and if we outlawed guns it would solve all the crime problems, sorry ain’t gonna happen.
Now make your country better and move on with yourself.

Dude, the pink lawn flamingos are the ONLY way to go. White ones look bland and black ones would look more like big old crows.
Color makes all the difference in the world Thrawn.

Then why did you mention that, "Most of the murders are Black on Black and drug crime related (when I say most I mean over 50%).".
It's a agruement I've seen many times on this BBS so I decide to ask about it now, as it was certainly alluded to.
You really want the only difference to be guns, well it's not, sorry.
Bull****.
The problem is systemic and deep routed, in a culture and generation and has no chance of being solved with or without gun laws.
I'm sure it is, what I was wondering about was comments like the following.
"the difference is as long as it is "black on black" it does not involve me or mine"

OHH !!! (Sound of nerve being struck)
rant mode on
It makes a difference trust me (I wish it didn’t) and I think you know it and are just trolling.
The gang lifestyle is tribal and harsh, with no quarter given for weakness, it is as racial as you can imagine. The black gangs are not forgiving of other black gangs another more then they are of any other gang, The problem is poverty and poverty is from lack of application of oneself for betterment. With all the handouts over the last 30 years, we (as a society) have keep minorities down by replacing self application with welfare, while at the same time paying star athletes millions and teachers next to nothing. When gang members have something else to live for other then a street corner a slow change may start, until then forget about it.
This is reality, I am not trying to politicize or stereotype this, I am sad about this, as I have seen the potential in these folks and have worked with our church as well as Habituate for Humanity to help effect a change. I have worked with young gang members to train them in a trade (I am a homebuilder) and with very few exceptions have been bitterly disappointed by the pull of the gang and the “hood”. I have been threatened and intimidated by them for trying to help one of their members. Our Habitat home was broken into and trashed because we would not pay for protection as it was in a gang area (all areas are gang areas BTW).
Am I bitter? yep but I am even sadder about the situation. What burns my cookies is folks who think they know everything and spout off from there Lilly white towers about what’s wrong and how they have all the answers.
Why not outlaw ignorance, poverty and intolerance first then outlaw guns.
Rant mode off (sorry)
Puts soapbox away

To point out in context the differance in our countrys and cultures (good and bad).
How many black gangs in Can?
Have many hoods?
How many Haitions and Cubans floating on rafts coming to your country? Would you let them stay ? would you house, feed, pay them?
Yep the rat cages here called citys are full and full of problems, thats why I moved away from them.
