Why are the 50 cal. guns on the p38 different lengths? I think it has something to do with the way the ammo loads into the guns but not sure.

That's it. Same with most other US planes. The barrels aren't different lengths, they just protrude differently because each gun is offset in the wing to allow gunbelts to clear.
