Straffo/saintaw - as you're both here - What do you think of Tony Blair's gaffe with Chirac when he said "Merci à toi"? The press here made a big thing of it.

Sorry Beetle, to be honnest I am spending too much time in that Scandinavian pub nextdoor lately... haven't watched the news for the last few weeks :)

I will look it up in Google.

Can't be much worse than Prince Charles that said that he had the "Cul de foudre" (compared to "Coup de foudre") in an announcement to the press in Cannes a few years ago, hehehe...

*Edit*
Just read it here (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2004/05/10/dl1003.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/05/10/ixnewstop.html)

In my opinion, if they give him sh*t for that... its pretty ridiculous. We all make mistakes in foreign language and cod knows french is much more complex than english. They should have Delors give a few speeches in frenglish for a trade/good laugh :)

Didn't hear of it before your post :)

It's not a big mistake I don't think any French were surprised ,it's a common occurence for foreigner to use "Tu" when they should use "Vous" and vice-versa :)

Hahaha. In English, the familiar forms were words like thee and thou - not used for many years, except "thee" is sometimes heard in Yorkshire where Dowding lives. :D

In my French lessons at school, the teacher had difficulty explaining the difference. The scenario he gave was that improper use of tu/toi was akin to going up to a policeman, slapping him on the back and saying "how are yo doing, mate?" - LOL - I was more confused than ever after that!

I've studied Italian, and the familiar form seems to be used more liberally in Italian than in French.

The test is bogus storch two questions at least have wrong answers coded.
. Parents should be 'tu' (only very 'old school' family use 'vous')
. Kitten's should be 'tu' also

Even teachers have problems dealing with it! ;)

PS : Saintaw -> Belgium

Thats what happens when you try to learn a language by going to school for it.  The best way is to visit the place and engage in political discussions.  That way you learn all the daily use words and get to practice your sparring as well.
