Main fuel tank is located in the lower frame structure below the pilot. Auxillary tank behind the pilot. Both tanks are self sealing.
The main tank is between the steel mounting bulkheads for the wings. The super structure for the super charger being steel, protects the tank from ground fire. Short of a direct hit from an 88, the main tank was well protected.
The engine: Pratt & Whitney R-2800
It can loose all of the oil from the reservoir and the pistons will run on residual crank case oil. That was why so many guys got home after being shot up. P47 could loose 2 or 3 jugs and keep running.

By the way the 2 large tanks you see in the cutaway drawing in front of the cockpit are the oil and water reservoirs.:)
