I'll have a Caterham Super Seven De Dion, with the 202 hp. Zetec engine and six-speed gearbox. 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. Possibly the best handling road car on earth. Clobbered Porsche and Ferrari in recent on-track road racing comparison test.
About $38,000 complete and ready to drive, $26k less engine and gearbox (roller).
Not much status per se, that is until you dispose of a $150,000 "supercar" and its owner commits suicide in his grief.
Comfort? Non-exisitant. Luxury? Not a trace. Practicality? Zippo. What it does offer is the highest level of performance below the mega-cars (Enzo, Saleen S-7 and so on).

While I was still in the car repair bidness, I had a 1963 convertible Impala SS with that dual-quad 409 setup as part of my clientele. Sweet car.
Funny story, the guy bought it (restored) at a car show in Pennsylvania, and had it shipped here. Thing is, he lives across the river in Mexico (Reynosa, Tamaulipas). He didn't plan ahead enough to have it registered by the time it got here.
So, *REALLY* hot to take it home to the hood and show it off, instead of storing it until he could get plates, he took plates off his driver and put 'em on his dream toy.
And proceeded to try to drive across through Mexican customs :)
Anyone who knows how Mexicans are knows they *LIKE* cars. The guy pulling this handsomehunk stunt is a prime example. He shoulda thought this through, LOL! Of *COURSE* this shiny fire engine red convertible with white leather interior in immaculate condition attracted interest. It took 'em about 15 seconds to figure out the plates belonged to a 1989 Taurus :)
So Jaime's heart is crushed as he watches them take the keys from his hand and drive it to the impound yard (ROTFLMAO at the thought of the look on his face!)
Good thing he was one of the elite in that city, and thus knew exactly whjich judge to go grease. It only cost him a couple of thousand $$$ to get his car back - pretty expensive bridge toll, eh?

Now that would be a dream car for me. Even better, same engine in a GT40 chassis. Wow. Shades of Le Mans 1966! (Ford = First On Race Day, bay-bee! ;)
I'd also kinda like to have one of these for a daily driver. I actually did have one for about 3 years, sold it in 1980. It was pretty damned fast for an automatic-transmission air-conditioned comfy ride. I never found a place to open it up, got it to 140mph a few times before I chickened out and was only at 5200rpm - could turn 7500rpm in lower gears, do the math - it did low 14s @100mph in the 1/4, 6300rpm in second gear at the trap. That was all stock except for the .030 I cut off the heads and the valve springs for a 67 model 389 Tri-power I installed.

1971 Trans Am 455HO
I kick myself in the bellybutton for selling it every time this kinda discussion comes up :p

Not only butt-ugly, but a serious piece of crap-built car. I had a few of 'em as clientele back in the '80s. It used a gutless little Volvo V6 engine for power, wasn't even turbocharged - the Toyota's yer talkin here would out-run it :)
Hell, some of the interior was built with freakin PLYWOOD for crissake :\

I would take an old Austin Healey 100 of about 1955 vintage and stuff a small block Chevy in it for about 400 hp... next year I think i'm gonna pull the 4 speed and stuff in a 6 speed.
capt.. I love the '53 stude. Allways wanted one of them.
The only car I ever really regret getting rid of was my 59 vette. They make a chassis for the old vettes now that is all C5 vette suspension.
my 69 chevelle is an el camino with a 468 and 6 speed and vintage air system.
friend of mine has a lotus super 7 with a 4 banger ford in it that is about 120 hp I guess.. it is a pretty bare bones car but handles well and accelerates ok.

yes and no.
Yes, open road.
No, stuck in traffic with no A/C and all that heat from the motor. And every "Ricer" and kid that took his moms old ford LTD wagon and put craigers on it wants to race. Mostly I get alot of thumbs up. It's just some Aholes that tailgate you and "rev" their widdle 4cyclinders cause it has a neon yellow paint job to match the rear spoiler thats 3 times the size of the car with the neon tubes under the car flashing to the beat of some Rap music played at a volume of a 747 jet engine.... other than that it's SWEET!!! Oh and she don't run on Reg:(

nuttz.. I understand.. An El Camino with black interior is pretty warm in Sacramento area in the summer. I bought a vinatage air system for the car. It is air conditioning and heater/defroster all in one unit. It all fits under the dash and the contols are duplicates of factory controls but electic instead of cable... modern compressor with 134. I ran it for like an hour and a half in stop and go freeway parking lot traffic with outside temp over 100.... the 468 never got over about 200 degrees..
I have power steering and power disc brakes but the real problem with the car is that I have a 3200 lb clutch and 6 speed.. left leg gets a mite sore.. 1st gear is real low tho so I can stay off the clutch a lot.
best thing about the vintage air system is that it all fit under the dash and I got rid of about 100 lbs of antique GM heater and air conditioner that was spred out all over the car... used to be allmost impossible to get the passenger side plug because of the air and heater box on the firewall... that is all gone now and plaugs take like 10 minutes tops to change.
yep.. gotta run premium tho.. car will idle all day with it's mild but still lumpy cam. 12 bolt posi with 3.31 gears. with the six speed, 70 mph is 2,200 RPM.

Went with a 4 core deep radiator, used to use the "cool can" remember those in the 70's? can of ice and coil the fuel line threw it so you don't get vapor lock. I had an aluminum intake manifold but went back to stock, the aluminium just attracked to much heat. Had to go back to the old slobberjet carb. The Holley's are just too tempermental anymore, run one day need to re-adjust the next, and park it for a few weeks or store for winter, thats the end of the seals. So slobberjet it is. I know the after market A/C underdash do work well, i decided to forgo the A/C on this car and found speakers to fit into the A/C ball openings in the dash. The Ragtop really doesn't need A/C:)
LOL< your clutch problem i remember well, my Bro dropped a 350 into an old vega with a 4 speed, all manual steering, brakes, ETC. and had to drive it threw manhattan... WOW My one leg was the size of Swartzzeneggers, And the torque was so bad , you could only "suggest" a Turn. I broke so may clutch cables in that car.

nuttz... except for cost there is no downside to the vintage air air conditioner.. I have had convertables and found air to be very useful in em.
I have a sred bore aluminum manifold on my 468 and use an edelbrock version of the quadrajet. this is an 850 cfm carb with adjustments for all ranges and secondaryu opening. GM never built a quadrajet over 750 cfm but this is a new casting by acme... it is a pricey carb but so far (2 years) it has been worth it.
