Adolf Galland was a highly decorated fighter pilot in WWII.  He formed the  JV44.  The aircraft was the Me-262.  He passed away in February, 1996.

Also, iirc, wasn't he placed in charge of fighters for the Luftwaffe?  I also seem to remember somthing like he clashed with Goerring (sp?) and was demoted to the command of JV44.  Sorta like the Brer Rabbit... "Please don't throw me into that briar patch!"
