I get a similar message.  I had been able to play alright up until about 38 or so.  Every time I try and log on now I get the following message:

Initialization failed with 9 mainWLD_Failed-1

I have no idea what that means.

Was getting that error message.  Downloaded AH2 patch 41 and still got the message.  I stumbled into the answer for my situation.  Was reading about 256 color and I right clicked on the AH2 Icon.  I selected properties and then the last tab.  There is a option to "run this program in 256 color"   For some reason, this was Checked.  Dont understand how it got checked but it was.  I unchecked it and AH2 works great now.

Well dip me in applebutter and call me a hushpuppy!

Renamed my aceshigh .exe back to original and checked that..sure enough it was set to 256 and when i unchecked it AH2 ran fine.

Seems like a graphics driver issue for me. Running on 4.2 and everything looks fine rite now.
Directx already updated, and same result on 4.6, didnt try other 4.x .

thx anyway.

256 Color check box, new one for the books, never new about it.Thanks a bunch for posting that spivey.

el3736, that err is cause by not being able to open the stdshape.res file. It is usualy caused by 1 of 2 things.

1. Starting up in the wrong folder. People some times try make a short cut and copy the aceshigh.exe file to the desk top instead of creating a short cut. This can be tested by opening the aceshigh II folder and  double click the aceshigh.exe file directly.

2. Bad install, delete you aceshigh II folder and reinstall.

I deleted AH2 as suggested and reloaded it.  This time I am back to an original message stating that my video drivers need updating in that it does not support z buffering.  I had updated the drivers already and was able to play on an earlier version of AH2.  Would deleting the program and downloading it again have affected my video drivers?
