Title: F6F question
Post by: AKcurly on June 06, 2001, 04:27:00 AM
I'm not a historical accuracy hound, but I am curious -- the answer won't change in any way how I feel about Aces High or the F6F as modeled in AH.  Historically speaking, did the F6F have the same stall characteristics as the F6F as modeled in Aces High?

Many of us put planes through paces that real pilots in real planes wouldn't dare to perform -- after all, we have different goals in mind.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Nope. The real F6F was a kitten in a stall, didn't pull much on take-off, and was a real joy to fly. Zeno's has a training film about it in RealPlayer format.

Heh.

Tonight I had three fights in a row with three seperate F6F's. Each time I saw that left wing dip, and each time I watched as they spun helplessly to their deaths.

I started feelin' sorry for those guys.

Sort of.

Well comparitively, the Hellcat seems to have one of the most abrupt accelerated stalls in the game.  It is nasty.  If you can fly around that stall and be careful, it is quite a nice bird though.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Did they do this while knife fighting? IMO, then they are either using Combat trim or thier plane wa badly our of trim. I've grabbed an F6F more this tour with the aquatic nature of the terrain and I find if I am very trim conscious I do not get that spin any more. Not saying it's still right but it can be dealt with if one tends to the chores and doesn't expect the F6F to be a yank&bank fighter. I can turn fight with that F6F better than most planes I've flown to date *IF* I mind the trim. (which I've always done manually. no CT here)

Seems the F6F should be a yank and bank fighter though.  I just don't understand why its stall is so much worse than any other aircraft in the arena (possible exception of p-38).

As for the auto-trim feature with the F6F.. you might as well not bother.  It is never properly trimmed using it and it will get you into trouble very quickly as the fight slows.

The F6F is a very good aircraft with some very outsanding quirks.

The F6F is <insert your favorite higher diety here>'s own aircraft!

It is my favorite plane of the war and a dangerous plane if flown right.  Too bad I don't know hopw to fight in it.

Actually, the F6F was designed to defeat the zero by being faster and climbing better than the zero.  In other words, it was designed to E-fight or BnZ Zeroes!

The main thing is, there is no reason its stall should be so bad.  It should be able to handle maneuvers at least as well as the F4u...

It has incredible low speed maneuverability with flaps extended.. but when you hit that magic spot... bam! snapped again.

Can't say I've seen that in any of the other Allied planes except the P-38... the one plane I'd think would have the best stall charcteristics.

while I agree that the AH cat doesnt seem to behave like history would say it did.. It was never intended to turn fight japanese AC as the other gentleman made reference too. Pilotes were told to stay  out of turnfights and use superior numbers and team tactics to win..which they did :)

It couldn't turn with a zeke... don't think anyone said it should.

It should be able to hang with an F4u without snap stalling.
