Title: Jameson Whiskey
Post by: VOR on June 09, 2004, 08:12:07 PM
Since my Warsteiner post turned out about as I expected, I thought I'd post this:

Unlike my fav cheap euro beer, this one seems to be something of a hit across the pond...or at least somewhat proliferated. It's very smooth and great for sipping with a cube or two of ice.

GACK!!!  Unwashed heathen!!!

Drink it straight.  With either spring water or (if you live in Arizona) an ice cube or two.

Also, all fine alcohol, such as Jamesons, Appleton Estate, Patron Anejo and Blanton's should be drunk in only fine Polish crystal or in a steel camp cup around a fire.

Jameson is good stuff, really smooth and quite different to Scottish whiskys. If you like Jameson, you should also try Bushmills, which is another popular Irish Whiskey.

Jameson is good, and priced at only half of some of the leading Scotch whiskies. But that Oban you bought me in Victoria the other week takes some beating! :aok I've looked out for it since but haven't found it yet.

Mead's a really nice drink, but a bit too sweet for me in quantity. Monastries here make mead and I get it every now and again when I'm up in the North East.

Is Maker's Mark considered to be the best Bourbon that's widely available?  It's really good stuff, but I can't help feeling that there is better out there.

I'm a huge fan of budget wiskey. I've been into Elijah Craig for the last year or so. It's my favorite bourbon and I can usually get it for 35 bucks a bottle at the local Communist Liquer stores.

Cube or two of ice?

Mention that to a Scot and he'd have your guts for haggis! :)  Neat, straight, no ice! :)

Notice different spelling - American Whiskey and Scottish Whisky.

Prefer Scottish single malts myself, Glen Grant, and yeah, Ravs, that Oban was very very sweet! :)

Oban...been brought up more than once. Gotta have a look. Never heard of it, so it might be hard to find over here in the land of Kentucky Bourbon.

Replicant, I take it ice = diluting your drink and therefore a cardinal sin in Scotland? The Scots will have to excuse me. I'm something of a sissy. :D Out of curiosity, what is the preferred way to serve it over there? Temperature, serving size?

Ok, found some Oban online: http://store.yahoo.com/wineglobe-store/12128.html

$59 seems to be a bargain price compared to other places that carry it. Still, it's usually more than I spend on a bottle, so let me ask you this: is it worth it?

Whisky is normally served at room temperature.

Have a look at http://www.scotchwhisky.net/distilleries/

This is a list of all the Scottish Whiskys.  Although it says 'Highland' and 'Lowland' this is purely in general terms and not the actual 'county'.  The Speyside Whisky trail has loads and loads of distilleries and is actually in 'Grampian'.  A guy I know from work lived near there and he'd been to them all and tried all of them! :)

Whisky single malts are stocked in most decent pubs, mostly Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, Oban, Cragganmore, Glenlivet and perhaps Dalwhinnie.

They do, in Texas at least. Liquor stores can get a "Tasting Permit". But they must submit the permit 3 days before the tasting. If you want to sample several different brands, why not go to a bar?

If you like Knob Creek, really, give Elijah Craig a try. It retains a lot of that bold bourbon flavor, but the extra age gives it a much smoother finish.

Couple of reasons. Location = availability of hard to find brands. (I called some of the local stores looking for Oban before I resorted to a net search.) Also, I'm not much of a bar or party goer. Usually I'm just at someone's home or they are at mine.

Ah uisce beatha, the water of life.  A shot of whiskey every night before you go to bed is still considered the best  thing for you.

Remember Irish is whiskEy and scotch is rubbish.........er sorry spelt whisky. Damm Scots never could spell.  I prefer Irish whiskey  naturally enough.  It's so much smoother and refined.  I always feel you can taste the moors and bogs in Scotch.

Hey VOR surprising  that someone from TN should like Irish whiskey considering the local TN brew. Jack Daniels and all. I flew over Clarksville TN years ago while doing my Instrument rating.  I used to think all of America looked like Tennessee.

If anyone out there want to get their hands on a rare Irish whiskey let me know.  The distilleries are just up the road from me.  I'm sure I could pick up most of them.

I've only lived here for a little over a year. Job transfers me around alot. Yeah, there is some pretty good local stuff here for sure...but generally speaking you have to buy a select label if you don't want something mass-produced. Since a friend introduced me to Jameson a couple years ago I've thought of it as the cat's meow, so I wanna see what else is over there. :) As for the rare stuff from your neighborhood, I'd be interested in learning more if you have a specific recommendation and can arrange shipping. It would be a plus if it's something that will store well if it's only opened occasionally. Email me if u like and maybe we can make an arrangement.

I've tried Knob creek, and bloody good it was too. In fact, the person who gave it to me said it was the 'best' sour mash' ever.  Had forgotten until it was posted. But  I want to try sik's suggestion. I'll get a friendly american personage I know to send it to me ;0

Definitely no ice with a decent single malt scotch. It is said that ice numbs the tongue and therefore diminishes your ability to taste. A little spring water is ok and may help you to appreciate the more subtle flavors.
Title: Jameson Whiskey
Post by: Chanter on June 10, 2004, 08:28:04 PM
Close.  No ice in whisky, as it destroys the aromatics.

Adding a wee bit of good spring water will release more of the subtle flavours.  Some whiskys don't take well to reducing (water), ie those from sherried casks.

Post by: VOR on June 10, 2004, 08:36:21 PM
So..is it more an issue of temperature or the ice cube itself, as in a sudden change in temperature? Impurities in the tap water? I'm kinda missing the point here, but I'm not sure how. :)

Guys, life is short. sampling of life small pleasures is a must. can't afford it? get a piggybank and start saving the pennies. spouse won't allow you to spend that much? sneak it in as a form of a present, add it to a bigger present or something. there is always a way. think you might not like it? well ,you won't know til you try it. call bars or pubs see if they serve it by the shots or glass. if it is a wine, hehehe most wine stores and wineries have wine tasting days(usually free, kind of like a promo to sell more), call to see when they have one. maybe even plan a little day trip for it , it'll be like a mini-vacation. those that are not old enough, sorry, but you will just have to wait like the rest of us did.

Hehe, no problems there. But I'm not a natural whisky drinker. Not really a spirits drinker at all. I prefer red wines. But I did enjoy that Oban that Ravell's kindly purchased for me. I'm sure all six of us who had one did.

RPM had it for Irish Whiskey with Knappogue Castle.  That stuff is dangerous.

My shelf has a bottle of Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek.  The Balvennie 12 doublewood is empty as is the Glenmorangie 12 portwood.  Of course, the Glenmorangie 21 simply kicks ass, but that's a bit too pricey for me.

anyone here drink laphroaig scotch?  Man o man even the scotch drinkers turn their nose at this one.  In a professional review they used the term "burnt hospital gauze".

Beet1e, where do you like your red wine from?  You are from England right?  I live about 4 hours from Napa valley CA.  And try to get there at least 3 times a year.  I just finished my wine celler in my house.  Has capacity for 300 bottles (has about 100 bottles now) is kept at 58 degrees always.

I prefer American bourbon and Irish whiskey to scotch.  I just can't drink it.

Laphoraig tastes like medicine...until you put a tiny splash of water in it, and then all the flavour comes oozing out; that's the trick with Islay malts. Never drink a strong Islay neat.

Rpm...I've never seen that scotch before..what is it? (pic too small for me to read the label)

It's Aberlour a'bunadh. a'bunadh is gaelic for 'the origin'. It is scotch made the way it was in the beginning. Small copper pot stills, no cold filtering and the bottle even resembles the medicine bottles used when you went to the still to get a fill. It's cask stregnth, usually around 127 proof, but goes down smoooooooooth. Imbibe neat, adding anything to it should be a felony.

I bought my Dad a bottle of that a while back for his birthday I think. We tried to drink it neat but was just too potent for us. A splash of water not only made it more enjoyable but it lasted longer too. :)

Yes, from England, and I enjoy the wines I can get hold of at the supermarket. Anything from Chile or Argentina is generally good. Bulgaria, South Africa, and the more up market Australian wines. Closer to home, Spain and Italy. French wines can be OK, but are often either overrated or overpriced. A price of £7/bottle and up gets you out of the plonk/gutrot bracket and into quality. I've tried some of those wines that retail at £15, but feel they're not worth the money. I'm afraid I'm not into the league of 1947 Chateau Petrus, or 1945 Chateau Lafite Baron Rothschild...

Wow, I had the same thoughts about Bowmore the first time I tried it. I'll have to revisit the island. Maybe for Father's day :)

Picked up a bottle of Aberlour 10 year over the weekend. It's good, not as good as the 15 year old but still very good.

I finally found a bottle tonight - at Oddbins in Henley-on-Thames. 14 yr old, saw the price - eek! Bought it anyway. It's a very good whisky - has the peat flavour of those NW Scotland whiskies, without the fieriness of Laphroaig aircraft fuel. I think Mr. Toad would like this. :aok
