OK...we been anxiously awaiting new maps and graphics....
I get to this map...Mindanao....
NO HI RES SQUID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO SQUID AT ALL??!!!!!!!!!
DID IT MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D
-
The Squid is undergoing the installation of 37mm tenticles and will be released in a few weeks :D
-
My understanding is that, although lovingly cared for and occasionaly fed rook and knit meat by the Bishops, the squid has just had enough of the total mistreatment and poor regard experienced during those brief periods that his pool is held in either Rook or Knight tenancy.
During re rendering of the terrain he obviously took his chance and escaped to the high seas.........:p
-
He is known to have murmured;
"I'll be back"
as he left for the high seas.
...
Let's hope he brings a friend with him.. how about Moby Dick?

Comapring IL2 and AH2 is like comparing apples and oranges.
My 2 cents worth.
-
"Comapring IL2 and AH2 is like comparing apples and oranges."
No it's not. It's perfectly apt.
How? Let me bring us back to 1997.
When EAW was released it delegated AW to the trash heap IMnsHO - as features and graphics went anyway. And I recall everyone poo-poo'd players who dared to "dis" AW and compare "3D" AW to EAW because EAW was a miminal-mutliplayer, box game and they could get away with "more" while AW could not. Ok. fine.
Now take a small jump two years to 1999 and AH, the new, very thrilling upstart, was *at least* on par with EAW while AW was barely able to compete with FighterAce 1.
The new AH had all the features that MMPOG players have always wanted and with great graphics to boot. It left AW and WB's chocking in it's dust. AH was as at least as good as EAW and it was MMP at that.
Come around two years later and the stunning IL2 comes out. IL2 makes AH, WB and WWIIO looks bad. Real bad.
And two-three years later (2004) AH-II comes out.
However it is not on par with IL2 from 2001 in the least. And I have to concur (keeping in mind AH-II is about to go pay-to-play and IMO is not honestly "a beta" anymore) that AH-II did not keep up. It looks and feels like AH-I to me also. Granted HiTech has said there are many things to come and the graphics and features will be added. What they are though is anyones guess.
So IMO comparing 2004's AH-III with 2001's IL-2 is completely warranted and apt. The more recent IL2- FB's perhaps not.
(p.s. I'm fully aware IL2 has a much larger team to work with than HTC does. But Kesmai too and so did iEN in making WB III and HTC bettered both easily)
-
OK FOLKS...this is about the SQUID!!!!!

We nurtured Ralphie from a mere squidling...and after many years he grew out of his Pen.....
I am sorry to say that the battery powered tracker around his 6th tentacle is missing or malfunctioning....
HITECH....PYRO....SKUZZY....w here is Ralphie????????
I am saddend to think that Ralphie...is.....g...g....gon e.....:(

I believe Jordi was alluding to the fact that IL2 is not a mmog ..... most likely due to graphics. ;)

Il-2 on my HD takes up 1.3GB (that is with the paint schemes folder removed) with FB and AEP installed.
AH2 takes up 377MB.
My guess is the big difference is that AH is designed to be downloaded. Il-2 was designed to be placed on a CD. That is what the biggest difference between the two is.
-
BUG_EAF322,
Look at the size of the devolopment teams as well as their budgets.
I think you're being wholly unrealistic.
Also keep in mind that the engine now supports much that isn't in the game yet.
-
than it's time to design on dvd
can't keep counting on the dial up guys
with 56k modem they oldschool and should upgrade to faster adl and cable
u can't count on 14.4kmodem players 3 years ago the same should count for 56k
i mean it would be stupid to let ur get restricted by download ability
ill would buy on cd to get better graphics.
think forward not backward

maybe i'm unrealistic but with big respect to HTC .
New people don't care about that they want their new puter peform and they want eye candy.
I really hope for them some il2 crowd will try this game and conscript themselfes
i just can't see a reason they gonna be.
that il2 crowd is very big btw.
can't deny em
I know HTC is a respectable development team. with 200% customer service etc.
New people don't, they don't care in fact.
-
and you still here?
yes look how many time i play please do look it up
please and see im throwing away 15 dollar a month
i play maybe 4 sorty in beta a week and that's it.
after that it's many many more hours on il2 fb
4 years conscripted here not deleted my account a moment and still.
i love AH that's why im extra critical maybe
cheerleading wouldn't help em really.
just look my scores up and u will see zero hours in the MA AH1
i don't know maybe u can tell me.
-
Well, I am not going to speak for HTC or try to convince you that AH2 is not what you want it to be (an online only Il-2). Nobody will deny that Il-2 looks great. If you are happy with Il-2 and spend much more time with it, maybe you are throwing $15 away on AH.
HTC has structured their game around a small download. That puts some limitations on what can and can't be put into the game in terms of graphics. Most people are able to understand this. With your current thoughts concerning the graphics and the FM of the P-38, maybe you should stop paying for AH. You don't seem happy with Aces High.
Whatever you choose to do, have fun and enjoy it.
-
What inspired the creation of the Squid? Any of the HTC crew a Delta Sigma Phi? (Its a greek thing)
-
maybe yes but still wait release.
on the other hand i can afford to throw away 15$
i'm not a quitter i guess.
i just don't see big differences in AH2 especially when i keep in though it's got an whole extra year development time.
i hope i am just terribly wrong and the release is gonna suprise me.
-
I thought this was about the squid ya damn Hijackers :(

Hey, Fifi .... run the damned pipe to my house and I'll probably do it. Until then, there happens to be quite a few online simmers that don't live close enough to urbania to have the option. Think period. :D
-
"I believe Jordi was alluding to the fact that IL2 is not a mmog ..... most likely due to graphics."
Dood. I understand fully what Jordi's was alluding to. I'm simply going beyond that and trying to show how, IMO, that there's not alot of difference between box sims and online games ......

Fact one. DSL and cable are NOT available everywhere.
So, HTC should eliminate everyone who does not have access to the Internet via a high speed service just to make you happy? I should lose members of my squad and friends I have known for years because they simply cannot get high speed Internet access at any price? You are THAT important? Not hardly.
Fact two. Flight simmers are notorious for their frugality and their resistance to buying the latest super computer for eye candy. Many of them are "bucks down" people who simply cannot afford to spend $1K on a computer to play. They have children who must be fed sheltered educated and clothed. They have a multitude of responsibilities and obligations that must be met before desires for pleasure are satisfied.
We may lose at least one or two of our squad to the upgrade to AH II becuase for one reason or another they are not able to upgrade to a better system. There are others throughout HTC's customer base in no small numbers who also cannot make it. You and your love of the Il2 graphics are so important that HTC should abandon the regular combat flight sim customer base and eliminate ANOTHER 30% or more of their paying customers to make you happy? Not hardly.
Would I LOVE to see AH II look as good as some of the screen shots I've seen from Il2? You're damned right I would. Do I have the computer and the connection to be able to enjoy it? Yes, and I consider myself extremely fortunate.
But am I willing to sacrifice my friends and players I hardly know so that I can have what I'd LIKE to have. Not just no, but Hell no.
The flight sim world is full of guys like Arlo and myself who struggled to afford a nice rig that runs anything we want. Not to mention guys who can barely run AH I and struggle to try to make AH II happen for them. And it's full of guys like Arlo, and members of my squad, who live in remote areas that may not get high speed Internet access for DECADES. I waited over TEN YEARS to get ADSL, and I live within 40 miles of a city of over 500K.
The fortunate few should think damned long and damned hard before they banish a large and loyal group of fellow combat flight simmers just to get the ultimate in graphics.
No, I'm not willing to sacrifice guys like Arlo and MtnMan and a host of others, and I'm damned glad HTC isn't either.

The squid is gone?
It must mean that HT is ready to transform the squid programming into the long rumored submarines.
I mean the squid use to surface and submerge, it would show bubbles when rising and sinking. Everyone knows that a squid is not a historical WWII weapon. It had to be a test platform for submarines.
I WANT the new submarines to have deck guns.
I want the new submarines to have AA guns.
I want the 8" gun on the submarines.
I want the japanese torpedoes modeled.
I want scout planes available on the submarines.
I want to launch mini-subs from the submarines.
I want to have to switch from diesel to electric motors.
I want to have black paint (grey paint, dazzel paint, pink paint, etc) for the exterior.
I want sonar
I want radar
I want a little broom modeled if I sink everything in sight.
None of the above is true, but I did want to be the first to whine about submarine modeling.
-
HT hasn't even got the base engine bug free & already your slamming AH II graphics?
LOL
Holy batman people, give the man a chance to work. This engine I truly believe will let him do some amazing things. I for one will be here flying, & enjoying what I have while I wait for the next new goodie.
ps look at the bottom of the splash screen on startup of ah2 for a hint.

maybe you should somehow mod the game? make it how you want? because its really hard to make a game. and making those would make it even harder.

Visualy at the moment there's almost no difference at all. Between AH1 and AH2 though apparently all that's yet to come but at this stage leaves alot to be desired and is dissapointing. Even the Hanger graphcis look poor.
I would never expect even early IL2 graphics in AH2, though I would expect it to look "different" if it's going to be promoted as being a new version rather then a update.
I know everyone including myself prefers FM,detailed damage modeling etc. But it's in visuals where people notice the most changes. Esecially for new players coming into the game.

Last night was the first time in a few revisions that I got to spend any amount of time in AH2 and I gotta say that the current terrain in AH looks a hell of a lot better than the current terrain in AH2. Maybe all the emphasis has been on the plane/vehicle art so far and hopefully the terrains will get a make over as well pretty soon.

LOL Maybe, but there's a few of us suffering from the same blindness then. Maybe I should of said no "Significant"difference graphic wise compared to AH1. In particular the terrrain, water, clouds, maps etc.

i love the ah2 clouds was fun zipping through them in ndisles FT.
But for me its always been about the FM/DM and that's been just an awesome upgrade.
Perhaps drawing comparisions between EAW and AW '98 with IL2 and AH2 would carry more weight if HTC's collective mindset wasn't so completely different from Kesmai. This is a very focused group.

Thanks Horn!

I love how a thread can start on a squid and end up bashing all the work that a few guys.....oops and a few gals.. can't forget the ladies that help with billing :) <-next time I pay off a credit card and cancel it and forget to change my billing with AH, I want to still get the nice REMINDER E-mail before they turn me off.
Anyway, I am sure the PEOPLE who work everyday on providing you a outlet for you entertainment needs have thick skins. I know when I bust my bellybutton on somthing and get ragged on for it that is the last frickin time I help that person........
I have only had a few problems and every time Mr. Neese has been nothing but helpfull to me.
I am not concerned about the graphics as mush as i am about stability...
Nothing pisses me off more than getting into a good fight and just as I am about to kill..... the enemy planes warps behind me or as with the new game I get a 2 second freeze and miss the shot...
I would like to see a balance between graphics and playablity No warping is a pipe dream with online games but to reduce it to a minimum would be nice.
I like the new version it is much harder to hit and I have evaded some zooming ponies although I am also hitting less
but it is a game and I love coming home after putting up with *******s all day and KILLING you guys
See you in the unfriendly skies
Ditto

Again wasn't this about the Squid ? :(
-
Didn't Kitty from Bigweek originally request the squid?
-
I will help Gixer out some with the graphics wise. I don't see the big deal about AH2. Maybe because it was made up to be so good. But it is a lot better than the graphics in AH. If they HTC had a magical money tree and all the resources of the big companys the graphics would be just as good or even beat IL2. I played IL2 for about a week and hate it. Sure HTC could make the graphcis better but then the downlaod and requirments would be bigger. Only reason I started palying AH was becuase of the fact back then in 2000 it was about the only game my old pc could play. HTC has done a really good job. And I am constantly impressed about the efforts to fix bugs and other things in the game.
-
Well I dont want to go off on a rant here But,.....It would appear to me that AH2 as we see it now is the ground floor of a new engine entirely, with numerous upgrades possible. Some of yu guys sound like spoiled lil schoolgirls! always with the gimme this or gimme that and it's not GOOD enough! I want I want Iwant!
Ya cant please all the people ALL the time I suppose
I miss the squid, the long talks with him, feeding him rooks with nite appatizers......AH the good ol' days
-
Who said my name !?!?!? :p
:D :D :D
I completely agree with you Captain Virgil Hilts and.....I almost agree with all of you and I also think HTC have, like we says in Italy, "Gatte da Pelare" (CATS TO SKINS) to means they've lots of problems to solve :aok
Have a good work HTC guys. :rofl

You dont need DSL/cable to play. 56K should be plenty. SKUZZY can prolly exsplain this better since he's used to the cutomer service Q&A more than me.
but in a nutshell your connection is just updating datta not very large. The majority of what you see and do is handled by YOUR puter. IIRC you only need 28.8 or 33.3. to run just peachy. Unless they changed somthing drastic that Im not aware of.

Perhaps you misunderstood. My point was that I think it would be very bad if HTC were to decide to make it manditory to have DSL or cable to play, as some desire. I'm well aware that it can be played on dialup, I'm glad it is, because I have several friends and squadmembers who will probably not ever have anything but dial up for a decade or so.

I played IL2 for about a week and hate it.
It takes some skilll to master especialy when ur going online like i do at the warclouds 44+ server.
It took me a few months to transition from AH into Il2 to get me to do the moves i do in AH.
But than it's like Zen killing high performance waflle machines in a p38J.
The views are like guncam films sometimes and there is nothing that beats it.
U simply just cannot judge over a week
anyway i like em both yes u can :)
