Title: Light Motorcycle
Post by: Hawklore on June 10, 2004, 01:11:32 PM
Ok, I've been thinking...

Whats a nice begining motorcycle thats light weight, and is more of a sit up straight bike, cause I just can't imagine bending in odd ways ;) . My dad liked the Honda Rebel, sort of a tour bike I guess, thats what he called it, but we all know he wanted to put an AGP card in a PCI slot.

I'm looking for something thats more like the WWII Motorcycles, any tips or hints, or just down right sarcasim will be accepted. :aok

Hawklore, for your 1st bike I'd suggest a 125cc dirt bike. That way you get to try all the "This is gonna be cool" stuff and learn not to do it again without killing yourself.

For your 1st street bike I'd suggest a bike under 500cc, then work your way up as you get more confident with your skills.

DO NOT go out and get a 750cc or 1000cc cruiser to start. You will be in the Hospital for many, many months. I've been riding motorcycles for 30 years if you have any questions.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting an all around bike, something that can go offroad but go onroad aswell, but is that for experinced people?

An On/Off is a good bike to learn on. Be warned, they do not react on pavement like they do on dirt. Especially in wet conditions. Knobby tires are a deathtrap on wet streets.

Yeah I don't plan on riding in the rain or after it's rained anyways.. :)

RPM as you have been riding for 30yrs, whats the best way to start? Trial and Error? or Classroom setting, spend money, etc.?

I'm talking offroad atfirst..

Remember, always wear a helmet and keep the car ahead of you at a good distance.

My personal opinion is start out riding dirt. That way you learn what the bike is capable of and if you make a mistake dirt is softer than concrete. I'm not talking go out and start motocrossing. Trail riding and cross country is a blast. Florida should have plenty of spots to ride.

Yes, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!

RPM how much would a dirt bike run?

Oh, and only idiots don't wear helmets, handsomehunkes don't wear helmets, prettythangholes don't wear helmets, and if your friend, or family member and don't wear a helmet, I will dissown you!

Hawk, I'd be afraid to quote prices. Look in the newspaper to get an idea of what they are running. I'd suggest a used bike to start because you WILL wreck it. Have someone knowledgeable ride the bike first to make sure everything is as it should be.

Just keep this in the back of you mind: "When you get confident, that's when you will make a mistake."

I started off in the dirt as well.  I didn't ride a whole lot, it was my buddy's bike, but learned a fair amount.  My first street bike was exactly what RPM suggested you don't do.  It was a 750cc Honda Shadow ACE cruiser style bike.  Frankly, I think it was the perfect intro bike for me.  Enough power to keep me on my toes, but no so much that it would be terribly easy to get killed.  Anything much smaller than that and you'll have trouble taking any passengers.  And let me tell you, chicks dig bikes.  :D

I sold mine about a month ago for the very reason stated above.  I started getting complacent on it, and then I was just plain scared to ride.  Figured it would be best to get it out from under my roof before I got myself hurt or worse.  I'll stick to good old muscle cars from now on.  ;)

You might want to consider a dual purpose bike..I'd recommend Kawasaki KLR..something in the 350 range though 650 might work better as a street bike...They are electric start, liquid cooled and have been around for 15 years. The 350 would be a blast to ride offroad, much more than the 650...You will learn more about biking riding offroad, how to not lock up the front wheel..etc.

They make great urban assault vehicles too, more manouverable than any other type of bike in traffic. And of course there is no better street bike to learn how to wheely on..:D

Do not go on the streets with anything smaller than a 500cc .

If you want a bike that can go offroad and onroad, pretty much consider it an offroad bike and not safe for much serious road travel.

I have been riding bikes since I was 5.....  34 years. My first street bike was a 750 cc Kawasaki LTD, age 17. I am small.... 5'7" and about 155 pounds.

Dont get a street bike as your first bike if you have never riden before. The streets are FAR more dangerous today with the influx of people driving while on the cell phones.

Even if you ride like an expert, expect some idiot not paying attention  in a car to kill you.

Bikes are great, but very dangerous on the roads nowadays.

Hey Kid,  stay off the streets, join a dirt bike club, learn to ride, then play "this is your life" pinball with the four-wheelers.  When you get to the street scene, get the loudest pipes the law will allow, and obey the law.

"get the loudest pipes the law will allow"

Loud pipes don't help anybody notice you until you've already passed by.  The best thing to do is to ride like nobody has any idea that you're there.  Forces you to always leave room and never ever ride next to a car any longer than you absolutely have to.
