What teachers used to be like. (http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Northeast/06/11/teacher.soap.ap/index.html)
I hope she gets her job back soon. We need to let teachers have some control again so they can teach.
-
Agreed.
-
Washing a kids mouth out with soap means she knows how to teach? I thought it meant that she knew how to discipline the old-fashioned way.
-
The problem(s) with public education are far from being that simple. I'm all for vouchers and/or privatization.

What's the difference?
She is teaching the kids there are consequences for their actions. A valuable lesson that most kids now a days never learn.

vouchers are the solution to a very serious problem that is getting worse every year.
you will never get vouchers if you vote in democrats.

yes yes.. No Child Left Behind was such a strong step toward privatization...
-
Mine washed my mouth out with soda... and candy.. and bubble gum.. :lol
-
dude... who do you think will bring the pres a bill to sign for vouchers the democrats or the republicans? Who would more likely sign it, kerry or Bush?
that's really all there is too it. nothing "grey" here.

Neither...
-
neither lazs.
if bush would do that, then my question is why hasn't he?
-
It hasn't come up yet. There has never been a bill that made it all the way to the pres for vouchers.
dude... are you saying that they are both equally likely to not sign it? The republicans get no support from the teachers union anyway. the dems depend on it as part of their coalition of the needy.

yes lazs.. that is exactly what I am saying.. Bush does not care and does not have the balls and kerry, dunno if he cares, but noway he has the balls..
Why do I make the statement about Bush not caring? Because he proved he did not after not funding NCLB..........
add: Im not sure if I support vouchers or not actually. Privatization on paper always works.. But on paper you dont account for such things as power and greed.. So I do not know..
Do other world countries educate their young with less? I mean are our schools in america all THAT much different than the rest of the world??

Oh hell yes. Sorry for the profanity but many countries value education above petty politics. I know that in Japan kids wear uniforms and go to school six days a week. I'm also pretty confident that they tolerate none of the bs that goes on in our public schools. I bet the same is true for many other countries as well.

Looked pretty tame to me, maybe even faked? Was it tolerated by school officals? Doesn't even come close to what happens in some of our schools. Show me one where teachers are cussed out and threatened by grade school students.
-
I would, but they don't let us take cameras in school.
Tame?... After a few weeks/months I bet that kid didn't think it was so tame.
Sucks.
And it's real.

wrong.
unlike that our schools dont gangbang like.
it is usually one on one fight with a crowd around.
security is always hanging around the bathroom, fights are almost never in class, i could go on and on but i wont because i think you get the main idea.

When I was young there was no security in school nor a need for it. I suspect there is no security at the school in the video, perhaps that was an infrequent incident? You have to ask yourself why we now need security forces in our schools.

Its the parents fault... It is we who are older then them who created this environment...
-
It's that stupid "hip-hop" music! :p
But seriously, my school was on the brink of a riot on the last few days before school ended. Police were there till the last day, wasn't too fun.
:(
-

No, its the result of the hippie age, alot of heavy drugs, soft drugs, alcohole etcetera...
Its the late 60 - 70 eras fault really.
-
Hmm... Watch a few videos from MTV, 50 Cent etc. etc. they arent exactly "singing" about peace and good will towards men.

nailed it.
Security wasn't there went you were a kid because schools didn't want to pay for it. then enough parents whines so they add em.
in a school districter the whinners (parents) will always win.
-
do schools in other nations have 12 and 13 year olds having oral sex in the bathrooms between classes? The middle school I went to had this happen a few months ago. 2 girls "servicing" 5 guys or something like that.
Go, USA education, go!
-
Like I said, we didn't have security guards because we didn't need them. It wasn't because we couldn't afford them. Times have changed, and not for the better.
That teacher should have been commended, not suspended. Teachers and Pricipals upheld the "law" when I was in school and their efforts were supported, not undermined by parents. This incident serves to illustrate just how absurd we have allowed ourselves to become.

Rant On
I Gave up on public school years ago, I home school my son. I was in HS from 70 to 74 we had Armed gaurds in the hallways, and my class had a greater than 50% dropout rate. Spending per pupil has more than doubled yet school programs have dwindled. last year my son had Religous studies, collage level <101 classes> Algabra, Chemistry, finshed his A+ studies , read Shakespere, O Henery, and Asimov for lit, pushed his way thru 7 CDs of German, learned cabinet making <3 sets of shelves and designed and finshed a coffee table from pelim scteches to finshed product>, learned all the counties/capitals in the state, then did it for the world, desinged and printed a travel brochure for NM and for Germany, and maxed the standerdized testing for his age group. And he did this in 2 to 4 hours a day. All of this was paid for by me and cost considerably less than a $1000.00 for the year . In the same year his peers had 4 classes a day, NO Phys Ed, science was reading Verns "Journey to the center of the earth" for vocabulary, math was still pre algabra Language arts was picture books, and the day was 6 hours long. IMO public schools have been reduced to day care status and parents have skiped out on their responsibilitys as partners in the education process. I dont want a voucher, I just want the fedral funds that are sent to each school on a per pupil basis, sent to me. Here at least, too many people are more concerned with the income a spouse can bring in than the care of their children. Another spin off was my son learning "when you are done, your time is your own" something 23 year old Privates hadn't figured when they were in my squad in the Army. Not bad for a 14 year old.
Rant Off
Really I think too many have quit on their kidds and really dont care, or more would be done to fix public education.
-
I go to public school, and I'm doing absolutely fine. Its not the teachers job to instill discipline, its the parents. Additionally, you can't force parents to discipline their children. What that teacher did does seem a little out of line to me personally, and my parents would think so as well. See, what the normal process is would be a detention or something, with a notification to the parents. From there, the parents should be disciplining the child on their own, outside the detention aspect. Sadly, this doesn't get done.
I used to get grounded for a week for detention and a month if I got in a fight. Now, I don't get detentions or in fights.

hawker... I am glad that you like your school but you are not paying for it.
You do realize that a private school student will be on average 3 grades higher in learning than you? this may not seem like a big deal to you now but...
when you get out and have to compete and when you get out and have to pay for public schools you might take on a different view.

The key word is on average....
...but I know what your saying. A lot of kids in my school are just going through the motions and not getting a lot out of free education.
I used to be private schooled as well, but I can't say I miss it.
On another note, I should mention that I'm gone for the next week. Summer seminar at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
-
hawker... no offense but... I don't really care if the kids that I am paying for are "enjoying" going to school. They aren't there to party on my dime. I do care that I am not getting value for my money and that the academic level of the U.S. drops every year.
congrats on the academy.

kiss my ***.
i went to private school for 8 years and from my point of view it has made no difference. I now go to public school. Private schools are no different than public with the exception of grading scale.
also private schools deal with trouble makers same differently. My school you got in a fight you went to something like ACP for a day, while at public you are uspended.
-
b17.. I really don't care about your pitiful personal experiance.. The truth is, I am paying for your worthless schooling and you probly won't even be able to make change or a decent hamburger after 12 years of public school..
I am paying for a system that is putting my country behind the others so you can kiss my ass.

lol..1 drop of soap..I wish she was my teacher way back when..:D
-
Someone please explain how 1 drop of soap is worse than a week of suspension for this kid. The way I see it, the drop of soap seemed to have a positive effect on the kid. Told him that not only wouldn't that type of behavior not be tolerated but that someone actually cared about him. As opposed to sending him home where who knows what kind of environment he may have experienced. Maybe his parents worked and would leave him alone? Maybe he'd be out on the streets exposed to who knows what type of influences.
This is a good example of what can happen when we rely on the "system" to protect us.
