This is just how I expected the Lavochkin to perform. Thanks to all of you at HTC for the excellent flight model and artwork. Went nine sorties and landed seven (two were stupid crashes), shot down a C-47 and P-51. Also, out flew a tailing P-51, causing it to auger a low alt (lavochka snaprolls nicely). All on my first day! Fergus was right, those two ShVAK's shred (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
The hi-res texture, NATEDOG, is great with just a 10FPS hit which brought it down to 59FPS (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Was very pleased to see no warping at all when at gunrange. Well done!

Thanks Leonid, I'm glad you like the La5.
But i gotta give credit where credit is due.........Superfly did those awesome high-res terrain textures that everyone loves so much.

Hey Lenoid... was the La-5 a short range fighter? In AH it seems to run out of gas pretty quick. You're right though, those 2 cannons make quick work of the enemy when they hit. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Hi Brick,
I've seen numerous references to the La-5FN's range and it has been shown to be anywhere from 380 to 475. However, the most recent (an therefore accurate) data does place it just short of the 400 mile range. My guess is the Lavochkin was lucky to get that much. As was the case with most Soviet fighters, they were usually short ranged, since most activity was of a tactical nature. However, there were guite a few Yak-9D's and even some Yak-9DD's which were their long-range fighters.

[slightly off topic]
Leonid,
do you know something about the russian ace Igor kaberov? He wrote a book, now published by Alan Sutton: "Svastika In The Gunsight", about his experiences during 1941-43. Before being sent back to teach green pilots how to fight the Luftwaffe, he flew the La-5. He says she was a wonderful a/c.

Gatt
(waiting for his Macchi C.205)

Yeah the La-5 is a sweet ride and at low alt can give the Spit and Mustang what for.
If we get the Yak-3 and/or the Sturmovik (once the strategic stuff gets rolled in) I can see it now...

LA5-FN was the best plane of Russian VVS.
With nice roll, turn ability and climb ability.

Andrusha... heh. I like it.
Hmm... I think I could get used to flying a Sturmovick. Flies under 30m altitude, BIG guns, and a requirement for an insane pilot?
Geez. This VVS group sounds better and better!
-Andy - err... Andrusha (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Gatt,
Kaberov fought with the 5 IAP-KBF(an air regiment of the Baltic Fleet) from the very beginning of the war. That unit was very active in the defense of Leningrad. They flew LaGG-3s well into 1943, but did also use Hurricanes and the La-5s. This unit was designated the 3 GvIAP-KBF on 18 Jan 1942. Kaberov has 8 personal air victories and 18 shared ones. His unit was mostly involved with close-support and ground troops.
Thanks for the tip on his book.

I hadn't seen many La5 in the arena so I left my trusty Gustav in the hanger and took the Lavochkin up for a try out. I bounced a Pony and got a burst in doing a high speed pass, he rtb ASAP with bad damage (confirmed by radio). BnZ'ed a Spit with a OK'ish gun pass (FM still a prob for me) and he went down w/out a wing... gulp ! I will feel uneasy if I meet one in the arena (espec if he has alt over me) in the 109.. hehehe ... I think a pair of 20mm's are about the best hardware for fighter ver fighter stuff ... nice plane (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Leonid and the other Russian plane enthusiasts, Thanks for all the great info on the real Lavochka and Yaks! I've been "flying" the Russian planes exclusively in AW, WB's and now AH for as long as I've been playing. Your information is interesting and helpful. Thank You again.
DICK!

A very nice ride. Seems to climb well, forgiving, good firepower, and a lot easier to keep on the runway than the Pony (unless I suddenly just got the hang of it when I changed rides (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)). Couldn't close a 109 in a stern chase, though (not that I should be able to, still learning so who knows).

Flathat,
The Bf 109G-10 was a messer one step away from the Koenig (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Add that methanol-water concoction and you have a LW plane that is quite formidable, and fast. An excellent vertical-dogfighter. It is, unfortunately, a very misunderstood plane, since it does not handle well in the traditional, full-throttle, BnZ role. Keep the throttle low on the dive, though, letting the plane climb by its wings, and you have a fighter that turns BnZ into a tight, surgically-precise technique (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Sort of Off-Topic:
Has anybody built a scale model of an La-5FN or an La-7? I prefer 1/48 scale, and the only kits I can find are Hobbycraft. Are those any good? Any other brands?
