Title: Kingcobra
Post by: Shuckins on June 11, 2004, 10:25:56 AM
I feel that the P-63 should brought to Aces high.  It's performance would allow it to fit in perfectly with the low-level, rat-race style of fighting so often found in the Main Arena.

The P-63 was faster than all other U.S. fighters below 15,000 feet.  It's rate of climb was superior as well at all altitudes up to 30,000 feet.  Roll rate, with a peak of 110 degrees a second, was better as well.  Turn rate was second only to that of the FM-2.

The only real drawbacks would be its range, 37mm cannon with rainbow ballistics, and performance inferior to P-51 and P-47 at higher altitudes.

Regards, Shuckins/Leggern

It would help round out the Russian plane set; it only saw combat on the Russian front to the best of my recollection, and served as the chief ride of a few of the Russian top aces.

The P-63 would be fun, but if I had to pick one plane to round out the Russian Lend Lease planeset I would pick the P-39.  It was delivered in greater numbers than the P-63, and it could also be used in Med and Pacific scenarios.   May as well kill two birds with one stone.

P-39 and P-63 were American, but we had better planes, so we gave them to the Russian Swarm-Force...

As much as I like the 63, there was little combat seen by them in Russian service as they got there too late.

From "Bells of the Kremlin"

"One of the pilots of the 17 IAP was Captain Viacheslav Sirotin, HSU, a 21 victory ace. On August 15, he and his wingman, Junior Lieutenant Miroshnichenko caught 2 Japanese fighters (either Ki-27 or Ki-43, the records are unclear), and shot down one of them. This was the Kingcobra's only aerial victory - ever."

Profile is of a lend lease P63A Kingcobra.

Pity they never brought out the prototype P-63D. This had the bubble canopy, but less obviously also the M9 37mm cannon, which was far more powerful than the M4 of the other models, with a high muzzle velocity.
