Didnt want to "soil" any of the other threads with this, but I have a ***** after watching the funeral (still not over).
Partisanship.
Plenty of people spoke - GWB being the last. Why oh why was it that the Democrats were feining "fatigue" during his comments and the Republicans, military personel and foreign dignitaries were somehow able to keep their eyes open?
Bill and Hillary made quite a show of it - Bills mouth even dropping open at one point and Hillary allowing her head to "jerk" back upright after having drifted.
Unacceptable. That kind of behavior doesnt belong in the Senate, let alone a Cathedral during a eulogy. Leave your bickering at the door - its a funeral for chists sake.
Seriously disapointed in quite a few people...
Anyone else see this circus?
-
You sound surprised.
I really enjoyed watching Gore with his jaw clinched and his eyes bulging while his neck swelled and quivered, during George W. Bush's eulogy. He looked like his head was going to explode.
I expected nothing less from the Clintons. They did exactly what I thought they would.

I found this topic after I joined Armchairgeneral.com forum

What a thing of beauty. The music and the pageantry were breath-taking. How could there have been a dry eye in the cathedral?

Seemed to be done quite tastefully..........
Bush juniors speech ..........a blatent re writing of history with under tones of his political message of the day...........
not a wet eye in the house.
Difference between father and son was significant.........
one a statesman
the other a statesmans spoilt brat playing at a role he does not understand...........
seeing the paul bearers enter to remove the coffin made me realise a potential source from whence John Wayne developed his "walk".
-
CSPAN had a constant feed of the casket sitting in the Capitol Rotunda. I watched the changing of the guard last night. Very moving ceremony. All the movements were silent count and pinpoint precision. Considering these men were thrown together from the 5 branches of the service and likely had less than a few days to practice it was all the more impressive.
-
I know my eyes did not stay dry. Was a shame about the pettiness.
-
the dems are upset as they realize they will never be able to deliver a candidate for POTUS that is fit to shine RR's shoes...
slick looked like he just came from an all-nighter, sad fact is he probably did..

Here's a text (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/06/20040611-2.html) of GW's eulogy. Please be kind enough to point out the parts that are a re-writing of history with undertones, etc. Some of us don't understand English so good as you.

I agree with you there Tilt, While dont really dislike JR, I have so much respect for his father. The do seem to be very different men.
The Funeral was well done, the words spoken seemed proper. I think everyone seemed respectful. It was a fine way to honor a man that gave alot to our country and to the free world.
Its a memory I will carry with me now for life.

Heres an example of what Im talking about.
Even Peter Jennings said something about it.
-
The video can be seen at msnbc.com. The speech was really great, and GWB performed it very well. Very touching.
The Clintons seem hell bent on disgracing themselves wherever they go and whatever they do though...

The funeral was very nice, touching eulogy by Bush.
Too bad the Clintons wanted to sleep rather than watch.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe those were members of the military honor guard and not merely just troops gathered from around.

I did not mean to insunuate that. They were indeed Honor Guard, not ordinary troops. From my experience the different branches don't interact that much in parade details. There may indeed be a dedicated multi-branch detail stationed in Washington. It was still a very impressive display.

Whatcha smoking, Tilt?
Just read the whole thing; sure didn't see what you saw.
Enlighten us with a few quotes from the text that bothered you.
-
Actually watched as much as I could during lunch. Very moving when Nancy turned and waved at the top of the steps entering AF1.
-
I gotta agree, I saw nothing partisan in the speech, well written, and a fitting eulogy.
-
I thought the funeral was awsome to see. Very very dignified.
-
Why did George W. Bush speak from the pulpit over the coffin when everyone else spoke from the podium next to it?
-
I could only listen to the speaches on the radio, and they where very nice. I really liked Thatcher's remarks as well as both Bush Sr and Jr's words. Very moving.
I hope to get to see these on TV.
-
Very tough to watch Bush Sr. choke up, very tough.

You're using an example of them closing their eyes in prayer? Look at the lady behind them with closed eyes as well. Either they're all observing a moment of prayer, or that was one boring funeral.
I haven't seen the footage of the funeral, so it's entirely possible that the Clintons made tulips out of themselves there. But the fact that I've now seen this picture used out-of-context several times to demonstrate their poor behavior raises alarm bells with me.

Well, I watched it. And I saw both of the Clintons with their eyes closed several times during the ceremony, during the eulogies, not during prayers. This is not to say that they did not close their eyes during prayers, but rather that the cameras were not on them during prayers. The cameras were on them during eulogies, and Hilary was far worse than Bill, as she repeatedly closed her eyes and at least gave the impression of nodding off. Bill looked as if he'd had no sleep, and had some sort of problem sitting still. He was either squirming or gesticulating any time he was not sitting with his eyes closed.
There was nothing boring about the funeral, it was a rather moving experience.

Just want to point out to both sides of the isle that this wasnt just about Reagan But the Office of the Presidency of the United States as well.
Like him or not Agree with him or not.
This was our president And respect for the office should be observed reguardless of which president it was.
The funeral of a President is not the time or the place for partisanship
-
Ya know what I was looking forward to...ANYTHING being said by the former Soviet President...but alas, he remained silent. I think the most fitting eulogy would've been by his old nemesis, but that is me.

Jimmy Kimmel showed a clip of those apparently caught napping:
Pres. Clinton
Hillary Clinton
Prince Charles
Colin Powell
Pres. Bush, Sr.
Vice Pres. Cheney
There were several others so it seems bi-partisan to me.

1 yes tilt, please give an example
2 Have to give Bill Clinton points for style, he looked like he was deep in thought or prayer, though by the third camera shot it was obviously neither. Hillary on the other hand was quite halarious with the whole head sinking and snaping
3 I thought all the eulogies at the national service were very appropriate and well done, though Lady Thatchers was the best.
4 At the California service I particularly liked Michael Reagans speech about his father, and particularly disliked Ron Reagans decision to throw in subtle political points in, because his views had always differed from his fathers, and his father was who this was supposed to be about.

Ron Jr's speech was excellent. Micheal seemed to be overly animated and trying too hard. Patty is still a hippy. All three were well done however, Ronnie should be proud.
BTW... Did California dial in a sunset for RR or what!

Amazing how perceptions can differ as my view of his sons is exactly opposite to yours. I enjoyed them all however.

I watched Jimmy Kimmel last night. He poked fun at quite a few of the people at the funeral as well. Bill Clinton wasn't the only one that had trouble staying tuned in.
-
I noticed a few heads nodding off. Some of those folks are well up there in years and can hardly be faulted.

Todd, I did see the footage. The picture is representative of their behavior during some of the funeral and all of W's speech.
As previously stated, Hillary was caught on camera doing the "jerk" awake head movement and Bills mouth dropped open at one point, afterwhich he wiped his face in "exhaustion."
To the viewer, it was painfully apparent that they werent exactly "praying."

I've attended more than my fare share of funerals, and having your eyes closed during a eulogy is no big deal.
I usually do. I'm not sleeping, it's usually during the better speakers, and its because they are usually describing the man well enough that I'm actually picturing the things they are saying in my mind.
you morn your way at let others morn theirs. if every there was a time where people ought to be free to act in the way they feel is appropriate and not have to worry what arm-chair-quarterbacks are thinking of their actions, it's at a damn funeral.
get a life of your own.

Youve got some funny standards for acceptable behavior. Morning is totally different from sleeping in my mind - could be wrong - but I doubt it.
-
I'm missing the connection between my opinion that Bush is ruining our country and that this time he needs to be defeated by a big-enough margin that it won't be possible for the court to appoint him president, and the issue at hand.
maybe you could explain it a little clearer.
