Title: Rear view mirrors
Post by: Tilt on June 14, 2004, 03:36:49 AM
Many of the AC  in AH had / used rear view mirrors..............

Discussion about the genaral accessability of 6 views to one side could  a zoomed 6 view utilise those mirrors that were available?

(Although I have to admit that one reason I never liked the AW Spit was that I could not do the left hand to right hand transposition)

I recall reading a thread a few years ago when I started playing AH.  Can't recall the exact reason why HT didn't add that feature but I think it was something about lag or severe performance drops.

It's a performance issue.

I'm using a machine with medium-range spec, which has some trouble running IL2/FB at full settings. When I turn the mirrors on, you can immediately notice the drop in framerates.

Basically, a mirror doesn't work in the way we think it would, in a virtual world. It means by implementing a mirror you actually create another 3D model at the mirror region, and make them work in relation with the movements of the plane behind you. So it's double the workload.

If, there is more than one plane to depict in the mirror, it could easily become triple, quadriple workload.

Never thought of that...........  I wonder if that the only way to achieve it? any way its beginning to sound like too much pain for too little gain.

just put the plane on auto pilot and go into the bathroom to pick ur nose

IL2 does not have an auto pilot, thus the need for cockpit mirrors :)

I believe the superior 6 views we have were compensation for not having rear views.

This was also brought up post AHII announcement, and either Pyro of HiTech ruled it out.

Personally I'd rather see multiple monitor support  :)

Now I could get into the multiple monitor support also...
Does anyone have or have used.. or even know if AH2 will support that Headsup
view system that is being used in IL2?
basically you put this little do-hickie on your glasses.. or the bill of your hat.. and where ever you point with your head it changes the view..
look to the top of the screen get an UP view.. right =right view.. etc.. look down to bottom of the screen gives a rear view.
etc. etc.

I seem to recall someone using it.  If I recall correctly (and at my age this is questionable) there were some issues.

I've already GOT dual monitors at home for my Unix system; I'd just need to hook up another cable for my game box to use them both.

The only reference I have ever heard about the mirrors, was that they were useless, a spitfire pilot said something like, "by the time you saw somebody in it, you were already dead"

Looking at the field of view you would get, I would not be suprised.
