12 New York City, USA
27 Los Angeles, USA
35 Chicago, USA
57 Honolulu, USA
68 Washington, USA
73 Houston, USA

What criteria are they using? I find it hard to believe it is cheaper to live in Honolulu than New York, LA, or Chicago. Nearly everything is shipped to Hawaii, land costs are outrageous and rental housing is scarce.

Personally, I think that list is high on crack.  I went to law school in San Fran.  It's @#%$ing expensive.

Why is Moskau at 3. place? Boroda?

Maybe they based their statistic on the prize of one Big Mac?

That list must rate the cost of living based on what the average person that lives there makes. Seoul isn't all that expensive.

Ditto.  You can find sub $1,000/mon places that are great 10-15 miles outside Honolulu, like in Ewa beach or something, but you'd get a shower stall for $1,000/mon in the city.

Not to mention the prices of everything else:

"Hun, Im going out to get milk, got a twenty on you?"

That list is kinda screwy - what criteria did they use - some combination of average per capita income figure and prices?  On prices alone I think its - well - wrong.  Chicago is another example - moved to Philly from there and its much more expensive in this neck of the woods.

This list does not appear accurate.  There's no way living in LA is more expensive than San Francisco.  Hell, it almost costs more to rent a PO Box in Frisco then an apartment in LA.

A few more trailer parks would bring the cost of living WAY down in all those cities.

I saw a list once that listed San Fran as the #1 most expensive  US city.  Honolulu was # 2.

You guys probably get it even worse than us here on Oahu.  At least for gas prices and food.   Gas seems to average about $2.20/gal for 87, unless you fill up near the refineries on the Leeward coast or at Costco.  Housing?  We just sold our 584 sq. ft. 1 br/bt condo apt for $300k.  It's within 15 mins walking to downtown Honolulu.  In exchange we're getting a single family home in suburbial east Oahu... 1500 sq. ft. 4 br/2 bth, 5000 sq. ft. lot.

For a little under $600k.

I think medians here for single family is around $430k.

I paid $178k for 3800sqft under A/C, 4500sqft under roof on a lake in a gated community within a golfcourse in 1999.  We border the everglades.  Just apppraised out at $475k.  scares the tar outta me how real estate has gone up here.  gas is at around $2.05 per gallon 87 oct.  I could sell it but then all I could afford was a beercan at one the "mfg home parks"  So we's a stayin'.

Gas is about 2.00 - 2.50 here on the Big Island. It's rediculous. At costco its around 1.80 or something. 30 min drive from my house. BTW I'll probably be on Oahu in July.

Been to White Plains too. Lame list.

Want some expensive real estate? Try Aspen.

Big Mac is about 40 rubles here. $1=29rubles.

This rating is based on hotel prices and other things that foreigners visiting Moscow are supposed to spend money on.

My daily spendings are around 100 rubles, including cigarettes and beer. If I was not too lazy to go buy food in the marketplace - I could save even more.

White bread: 9-10 rubles.
Potatoes: 5-10 rubles/kg
Meat: 80-200 rubles/kg
Cigarettes: I smoke "XXI century" biofilter, it's 13 rubles/pack. (Cheapest stuff from Soviet times starts at 3 rubles/pack.)
Beer: local brew is 12-20 rubles/0.5L
Vodka: 60-100 rubles/0.5L
Petrol: 12-15 rubles/litre
Underground ticket: 10 rubles.

Monthly rent for my 3-roomed flat (57 square meters) is 950 rubles. It includes central heating, cold and hot water, trash removal etc.

Who needs anything else? ;)
