I really haven't weighed in on the 40th president before, so ... since I've been away for a while I thought I'd vent a little.
I hated Reagan. He was my antichrist during the 80's. Most of his biggest mistakes were important issues to me and my friends. His handling of the AIDS issue, and his dismantling of the Mental health network through the deinstitutionalization of the State Hospitals were horrible moves as far as I was concerned. I was sure he was a failure.
I was wrong.
I still think he made a huge mistake on those 2 issues, and maybe a few more, but that all seems trivial compared to his accomplishments. Those have been stated enough here already, suffice it to say that he has no equal in foreign policy leadership over the past 50 years. His vision has been proven and his methods certified. This is not a Republican/Democrat issue at all, it is a question of recognizing the winner.
Reagan Won, and so did we.

Hmmm... AIDS research spending rose from 8 million to 2.3 billion during Reagan's eight year administration...if the figures are accurate.
Got no problem with spending on AIDS research.
On the other hand, I believe the amount spent on the government for disease research should be proportional to the number of people affected by that disease. How does AIDS stack up against lymphatic cancer in terms of number of victims and money spent on research?
I didn't lose my grandfather to AIDS.

As far as the mental health issue, tough call...having worked in the field for years and being a special olympics volunteer. He should have gave more money to mental health though i dont think it would have fixed the problem.
I am not sure how many of you have been to a mental health hospital, but i can tell you now the quality of life there was unbelieveably bad. I would rather freeze to death in the street than ever stay in one of those places.

This is such a DNC talking point. I'm sorry to dragg politics into this....(well said MT BTW)
One day after reagan died all I heard out of librals was he "helped spread aids" "did nothing for the aids epidemic" Just makes me angry people bringing this talking point up befor the man is even in the ground.....AGAIN well said MT.

As to the other side points...I still roll my eyes when I hear how Reagan "Just got lucky to be the President when he was". Those types must've been the type of kids who wanted 'Do Overs' when the dice didnt land their way.

I think you made a hell of a decent post there MT. Not so much because I agree or disagree with you but rather because you were so thoughtful and decent in your opinions of dissent and respect.
