Looks like the Boeing 737 varient gets the go ahead.
Wonder how many Harpoons it will carry?

can a 737 operate on the deck in crappy weather?

737 is a great airplane without doubt but I can think of some "issues". Loiter time and icing problems when on the deck for two off the top of my head.

Stupid question... Is Orion too big for carrier ops?

It's about time and the B737 may be the ideal platform.  Even though the Orion was near perfection for it's application.  The  Orion was a militarized Lockeed Electra airliner and the Brits are using the DeHavilland Comet as the Nimrod in the same role very effectively.

The Nimrod shares little in common with the Comet. It's more than just a miliarized version - it was practically redesigned inside out.

Why does the Orion need to be replaced?

Because they proved prone to capture?
And its pilots where only turbo prop rated when they got out. Now they will have 1000s of hours of 2 engine jet time.

Loiter time was my first thought.

and MT, they use the S-3 Viking for Carrier Ops (in addition to any number of Helos).

If anything the loiter time will be increased, think of all the fuel ord. and electronic detectors you can load when you don't have all those way over the 170lb FAA standard people on board.

The Orion was neat because they could shut down 2 of the engines to conserve fuel for extended loiter periods. I had the chance to see one flying at an airshow and it was definitely cool.

I remember an awesome high speed pass and then a very steep climb and turn...was trult amazing. However, it is likely getting a bit long in the tooth so to speak.

It might be interesting as to the the capability of a B737 type aircraft with the high bypass turbo fans.

You're probably right, I shouldn't admit this, but the reason I was wondering (and this is totaly irrelevant, but only what sparked the thought) was from playing Harpoon '97 on the train this week and noticing that my IL-38 could patrol for about 3 times as long as my IL-76 AWAC plane.

I meant to look it up to see if it was a feature or a bug, but then forgot about it until this topic came up.

Again, it's a total apples/oranges thing I know.

I thought they were worried about corrosion on the fan blades from being low in the salt air....guess they fixed it...or got enough money to look past it.

P-3's have been operating from Willow Grove for about 25 years. From the 'A' models to the 'C'.   I don't know how you could find a better patrol aircraft.  Unless the frames are wearing out, I don't see the need for a replacement.

One senator likely just managed to beat another one's bellybutton at the pork game. The write ups seemed to suggst the improved P-3 airframe (heavily revised and new construction) was more practical. Who knows. Turbofans work good for the Brits and the Viking, as pointed out.

Yeah, the plan was to replace a few frames...  Rumor was that LockMart was the intended winner up until the last minute... wonder what really went down with the source selection committee.
