NO! NO! NO! It's not what you think!
Dale was gracious enough to invite me for a flight in his RV-8 yesterday. We flew out of Northwest Regional which is about 12 miles south of Denton, Texas. To begin with I was a bit worried that that little airplane would even get my fat butt off the ground. Dang! That thing is small! But Oh so cool!
Dale demonstrated some aileron rolls, a couple of lazy eights, a loop, and a couple of hammerheads. Let me tell you...this is a WHOLE lot different than flying a sim! Except for one thing... the stick forces on the RV-8 are very similar to my CH Joystick. I was amazed! Nice and stable and ever so responsive.
Here are some pics...
This is one of me after it was all over...
(http://users2.ev1.net/~lmluper/flight/wish I had one.jpg)
This is one of Dale doing his "thing"...
(http://users2.ev1.net/~lmluper/flight/HT doing his thing.jpg)
This is one of me...I tried to get a picture showing us inverted, shutter wasn't fast enough, roll takes about a sec or so...
(http://users2.ev1.net/~lmluper/flight/comming out of a roll.jpg)
This is a picture of a really tired and hot pilot... it was in the mid 90's with high humidity... he had been dragging my fat butt around the sky for a couple of hours...
(http://users2.ev1.net/~lmluper/flight/A tired pilot.jpg)
Now I am one happy camper :) I totaly enjoyed the experience. Dale is a good pilot but my extra weight did allow me to "feel" a lot more than I really wanted to...He never surprised me, let me know what was going to happen and stopped when I couldn't take anymore. (what a wimp).
Next time you wonder if Dale knows what he is talking about when it comes to flying...take my word for it, he knows how to fly :).
P.S. A couple of more pics...
HT doing his walkaround...

-
I agree, very cool thing to do
And what a cool looking plane that is. That canopy looks so clear..... bet it gives great views.
How hot was it in the plane aflter you got up?
-
What resolution were you flying at?
Visual range set beyond 3 miles. Sliders at max, FSAA maxed and AF 8x... Is that an ostwind vulching the runway down there?
lol, wtg HT, glad you guys had fun :)
-
Very cool!
Is this some kind of hint that we will get OpenGL support for AHII soon?
-

Nuke, sitting on the runway with the canopy open and the engine off was stiffling to say the least. Once he got the fan going it cooled off a lot. Canopy closed and flying was pretty warm until we got some altitude then it wasn't bad at all. Since it was a clear canopy I never felt claustrophobic. Your right, there are some great views. Saw a bug on the windscreen and immediately dismissed it as the mouse pointer :).

I think maybe we should start taking it easy on ol' Hitech.....ya see all that grey?!!
-
Wow, what a great experience that must have been! I'm green with envy. :D

Just admit that you were skeeeeeeeeeered!!!! :D
-
So does Hitech know you have a new Harley?...:D
-
Nice post Mark and thanks for sharing the experience with us all.
In the third picture down, is that one of you making taka-taka-taka machine guns sounds while HiTech homes in on other planes? ;)
-
Damn...he offered me a ride too but he said something about weight and not being over 250. Got a ways to go to get to that weight class. :)
-
Mark, from that walkaround pic, it looks like you aren't the ONLY one carrying around some extra baggage!
:D

Hey Mark good to see your still enjoying sims and the real thing too. Just wanted to check in and say howdy :)

Sounds like a fun ride Mark ! I sure wish I could make the Con this year.
-
Hey Mark, that's a few more picture than you showed me yesterday.
Now get done here and do my ground checks. :D
Oh, by the way, keep that woody away from me!
-
I wonder if HT can write this off :) Taking a customer for a ride -- would the IRS buy it? That would be pretty slick.

may be we should blame HT that AH run in D3D and not in OpenGL :D
-
looks like a fun way to spend the afternoon! Sweet ride HT, get a haircut. Great pics Mark.

I do like the bullet holes stitching their way up the fuselage.
I can't afford one of those fancy RV8's, my favorite airplane so far for Aerobatics is the Focke Wulf FW-149D. Nifty airplane, I just helped finish the annual on it and the owner has seen fit to employ me as his CFI to fly with him whenever he flys...which is often! Really cool guy, has a friend with a TBM-700C2 (not the Avenger...but a hotrod turboprop that will true out at 300knots) Oh, then there's the guy with the conquest I fly with...wow I like florida :)
within the next year or two I'll come to own a Pitts S1C, then maybe ol Hitech will be up for some aerial combat. Speaking of which, here's a photo of me tucked onto the wing of a squaddie during an Air Combat USA mission in May of 2003 over Gettysburg, PA
Squaddie started up a little aerial photo biz and I suppose i'll plug it while I have the chance,
(http://www.vtxpress.com/Marchetti-2.jpg) www.vtxpress.com (http://www.vtxpress.com). It's RV6 from the game, first rate gentleman and will take care of all your aerial photography needs.
