What's wrong with this picture?

$42.50 for 1,000 feet of Cat-5e cable, 100 RJ-45 connectors, a crimp tool, and tester... seems like it's too good to be true. Is it crap?

Sounds too good to be true to me. RJ-45 (cat 5) connectors are expensive. If you scrimp on them it could cost you a lot more than you save.

That crimper looks sorta cheap. Using a hand held crimper can sometimes be a bit iffy as its not always reliable so the tester should help. Cables with RJ-45s on them are pneumaticly pressed at the cable manufacture. Look for the pin blades to strike the copper wires at 90 degree angles. If its off, it can easily result in a bad connect.
If your running the cable long and have problems with getting a signal even though the tester says its good, turn off auto negotiate link speed (at the PC) and set it to 10mbs under the the properties tab of the network card.
Good luck.

Too qualify my comment, I bought some cheap rj-45 connectors a few years ago (they weren't labeled cat 5) and had problems with the cables I made with them. If you're going use that stuff only at home no biggie, otherwise I'd resist the temptation.

Yeah... strictly home use.

Simple...CompGeeks RULES! even if their shipping can sometimes be pricey. :)

who cares about the junk crimper, thats a decent price for just the raw cable.

You can find decent deals now. If it's just for home use, you can't really go wrong, as long as it's interior.
