Title: Webb design help.
Post by: Maniac on June 17, 2004, 10:36:12 AM
Anyone here good with homepages and flash?

I need to create a menu system for a homepage im creating.

I would like it to function like this : You hold your mouse pointer over the news button, see the picture below...  and then when you hold it there, the white line shoots out to the left and then downwards to create the next dialouge box (sp?) where the next set of links will be.

Saw, i like your menu system at the picture hangar... any chance i could get ahold of that code?

Thx in advance.

http://www.flashkit.com

do a search for menus, or look at the interfaces category.

Kazillions of them for your downloading/customizing pleasure.

Just remember: Flash is Evil.

Of all the Flash "enhanced" sites I've seen, only one or two has made any good use of it.

Use it sparingly. The site shouldn't scream "OMG d00d 733tn3$$, I am teh best evah with Flash!". A better approach is to integrate it to enhance the old ways of the web, so to speak.

Have fun :)

One of the nicest web pages I have come across is this one:

Cartier (http://www.cartier.com)

browse around this site and see ...

Flash is great but I hate it for menus.  I'd rather see all options up front without having to move my mouse.

I think you are being blinded by the dark powers of flash... but anyway.

Simplest way to do what you propose.

You have:
- news box: button
- options movie: first frame is blank, and at some point you insert the animation of the line appearing and the buttons for the additional options.

You can do it like this:

Your news box is a button. Just make the "Over" keyframe to have the image you want as a background.
Also, make an action for the button: "on roll over" starts a little timer (or even simpler, just insert on your options movie some blank frames before the first image appears) and when it reaches the value you want, tell target (I know this instruction is deprecated but you get the idea) the options movie to start playing and show the line, then the options.

You'll want your button action to have also an "on roll out" to tell target the options movie to go to frame 1 and stop (provided frame 1 on the options movie is blank).

Hope you get the idea.

will email ya right away.

Can you customize the colors on the menu? and can you make it to open the new menu "boxes" to the right instead of downwards?

Regards.

Having the menu going to the side instead of "down" is a bit more painfull, because you have to set the window limits (sorry, bit pissed now... can't think of a better word :)).

I have something I can send you that will solve your problem, how big is your email capacity?

PS: the background is an image, so yes.. you can change it to anything you like, just need to keep the size about the same height as the text will be.

Yup, that's the 2.* Mb file i sent you last night. Did you get it alright?

It's a very easy to use DHTML menu editor, gimme a shout if you need help with it.

You can steal the source code from the ph, just get the JavaScript call on any pages, and the js file is located here:
