Title: Upgrade or Build a new machine?
Post by: chug4u on June 17, 2004, 06:18:33 PM
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 (must be on the cusp, all I see is 8300 from Dell now) P4 2.0Ghz 512K Cache 512mb Rdram (2x256mb in pairs) . Geforce4 420 mx Vcard. 40GB ATA-100, a 40x CD RW drive. To upgrade memory cheapest I've found is $229.00 per 512mb, So for 2Gb it's $916, I don't know anything about Motherboard and chipsets? I don't know what is compatible or not?  I don't know what memory is compatible. Is that determined by the Cpu or the motherboard? Is xeon Cpu's any better than the P4's?  I can put parts together just fine I just don't know which ones to put together to get the best game machine.  Lets say I have $1500.00 to build this machine can anybody give me a list to build and it will work better than what I already have. Thanks Chug.

Is this for running Aces High 2?
If you have an AGP slot, you just need to upgrade your video card to a Radeon 9600XT and you'll be fine.

Chug,
I agree with Connection. The only thing you need is a video card. You have plenty of memory, don't even think about upgrading to 2GB.

The 9600 XT is a good choice. Fry's has the 9800 Pro on sale for $199 this weekend too if you have one nearby.

What determines what kind of Memory I have to upgrade with Rdram is Extremely Expensive.

RDRAM is not worth buying. Stay with what you have and just change the video card, and maybe a bigger hard disk.

Like I said before a 9600XT is a good choice, but if you can pay extra for the 9800 Pro, that would be fantastic, cause it would go well for when you upgrade the rest of your system to an Athlon 64 with 1GB DDR RAM ;)

RDRAM is Rambus and was one of the worst debacles in computer manufacturing history
