I am posting this data in response to a evaluation report that said the F4U-1d was no match for the 190.  I believe the report was written by a pilot named Brown.  From the data shown, it appears the F4U-1d is quite the superior plane.  Why such a poor evaluation of it then?

My first question would be if those were the models being compared in the evaluation (1D v. A8)

The Navy actually did the evaluation.

BTW, that was pre paddle blade on the -1D

I believe that Brown was likely comparing the F4U-1D to the Fw190D-9.  The Fw190D-9 and Fw190A-8 are completely different craft.  The Fw190A-8 being no match for the Fw190D-9.

It was 1D vs 190A5/U4 (2 20mm guns).

Basically, a 0.16 HP/Lb F4U1D vs a 0.20 HP/Lb 190A5 at sea level. Only by powerloading, 190A5 was clearly the superior plane at sea level. A5 was still doing 1530 Hp at 20k, no idea about 1D power at that alt.

NOTE: 190A8 at 1.58ata had same powerloading than similar 190A5 at sealevel at 1.42ata.

I would think that the F4U-4 would be a match for the 190D.

I'm glad to see the Navy report views the F4U as the better aircraft in combat.

The F4U-4 is a very good match for the 190D-9. F4U-4 holds a slight advantage in speed, especially over 25K, while the 190D-9 holds a slight advanage in climb. However it must be noted that the real F4U-4 only had enough water for 8 minutes of WEP, while the 190D-9 had enough MW50 for 26 minutes of WEP.

What about maneuverability?

High speed maneuverability is about equal, medium speed goes to the 190, low speed goes to the F4U.

and how much time in military power for each one? ;) F4U4 is a match for a very very short period of time.

F4U4 should dominate FW190D9 in AH.

The F4U-1D had lower wing loading IE better in the turns than the 190A5 and it was also faster.

Climb I am not sure. If you read the test the F4U was superior at lower speed climbs and the 190 better at higher speed climbs. The test the Navy did the F4U did not have the Paddle prop.

Also the 190 had a slightly lower dive restriction based on the placard in the captured 190 cockpit.

It does. Unlike the 190D-9, the F4U-4's strengths are ideal for typical MA situations ... which is why the F4U-4 is perked and the 190D-9 is not. In a coordinated multiple plane engagement (like in R/L) the two planes are much more evenly matched in combat capability.
