Title: not what you think...
Post by: 2Hawks on June 20, 2004, 02:55:30 AM
Some planes aren't as small as you would think. I don't have stats on the 109. I threw my Chuck Yeagers Air COmbat book away years ago. but if I remember correctly some planes had about 14 feet of static clearance.  Since a Story is typically 8 feet you have nearly the size of a two story building.

Mind you the Pilot never sits anywhere near that high in a fighter, but again, you don't fly the plane sitting on the tip of the propeller in the topmost position... ;)

A standing man should be about as high as the 109 near the back of the cockpit. In AH2 that man can look into the 1st floor windows. :D

That looks like an early 109E, didn't the later models have longer gear and a longer tailwheel?

109's are little tiny airplanes, it shouldn't make any building look that small... The front door proves its out of scale...

I'll be looking forward to a picture of a hellcat like that... Hellcats are huge.

We have a 109F4 here at the Canadian National Aviation Museum in Ottawa, and it is a really tiny little aircraft. I had no trouble looking in the cockpit (I'm 6'3"). In fact, it's hard to believe they could even fly with all those guns, fuel , etc.  I doubt that I could fit into the cockpit.  Couldn't fit into a spit either, for that matter.  The P40E looks nice and roomy though.
The biggest WWII plane is the Lancaster bomber. The tires are like 6" high and the wing is 3 or 4 feet thick. It looks like a flying airbrake. Hard to believe that they could get airborne either.  The B24 is fairly bulky as well, but sits closer to the ground.

If the building door hight was a typical 80" Door. This would indicate that the bottom of the upper floor window would be roughly 10 ft.
The Prop Spinner looks to be about even the bottom of the Window. If the the man in a in the picture next to the 109 above were about 6 ft. this would make the Door header on the building about 4 to 4.5 ft. high.
Yeah...this does seem funny :)
