Machine is a 1 GB P4-2400 (533 FSB) with a Radeon 9800 Pro. What frame-rates should I expect at 1024x768 and 1280 x 1024?

With that processor.. Highest 60's max 70's. Something like that. I've heard in rare cases of ppl with that setup in the 80's+. It's better to think a bit lower than giving false hope.

I use a Radeon 9800 Pro overclocked to 431/371.
I run AH at 1024x768 with 4xFSAA and 8x AF and get 80 average, with the lowest drops being around 45 in heavy action. Quality settings in AH raised slightly.
You will see slightly lower frames because I have a faster CPU and RAM, and because I am overclocking, but you might get away with 6x FSAA and get the same framerate as below because the video card will not be pushed to its max by the CPU.

a friend of mine is running amd xp3200+(3gig) ;ddr400 ram(1gig) 9800 pro. seen it drop all the way down to 75fps in heavy clouds and as high as 230 in the clear....only drawback to that machine is cooling....cpu always runs over 140F with copper heatsink. ive gotten more stable fr at 1280 by 1024,around 65 no matter whats going on with v-sync. on,but its limited to your monitors' refresh rate at high res.play with it and see what happens

buz, i have about that same setup running at 1600x1200 4xaa and stay in the 70-85fps range (21" monitor 85refeshrate)
and as for the temps he is running... DAMN! mine hits 113F after a couple hours of play.

ya thats what my 2 gig runs.....keep telling him to update with more airflow through heatsink
