Wow, 9800 Pro, 128 Mb ....and AH2 just unbelievable!
Cant fight, cant do anything when others are around! Game freezes, hesitates, makes me crash (freezes so long, that Im in the air one min, and GROUND!) it holds for sooo long.
I work all day and come home to relax and play, now I gotta tweak, read boards for help, modify alter, do what now just to play this game? NOT WORTH IT!
So, I say....is this going to be fixed? dont know? But it is seriously getting annoying spending more time trying to fix my settings just to play.
Pay me $15 to play~ and maybe....dont fix this soon enough, and after 2 years of playing every day...it will hurt to hang it up. But honestly, this is ridiculous. What a dissapointment. Seriously

With a 9800 Pro and a reasonable processor (1.8 Mhz +) you should not be having those kinds of problems. I can appreciate your frustration, but there is some other reason and AH2 isn't the culprit.
HTC and other people here will try to help you get things sorted, but first you must post your system information, Directx information and video driver information as you see many have done in their signature.

my settings - ATI 9800PRO
Graphic Detail
"Level of detail" and "Displayed Object Size" sliders are set to performance
for a2a slide "Ground detail range" all the way to the right (0.5 miles) - this can cause studders bad if set to high as it is constantly trying to draw all the ground terrain which you don't need air to air
"Textures to load per frame" slider to 1
Video Settings:
unlimited FPS
1024x768
Max Texture Size = 512
Terrain Mipmapping, Transitions, Horizons - all checked
Gamma = 1.0
game is pretty smooth and the planes look good on zoom

128Mb is not a lot of RAM - perhaps that's your problem?
512Mb of modern RAM isn't that pricey.
-
128 megs of ram will do it. I ran AH2 with 128 megs. Before I upgraded to 384.

He was referring to his video card ram Pei.
I have the same card(9800 Pro) running a P4 3Ghz (800 mhx fsb)w 512 ram(Windows XP) and am having framerate probs too...
1067x768
512
everything maxed exept terrain draw set at lowest...
Getting the same frames in AH2 as I got in AH1 that was running a P3 1Ghz with GF3 Ti500.
For the record..I couldnt care less about ground terrain detain when Im flying(I don't like those trees man)...I would rather the detail be on planes, tracers, explosion effects, sun and reflections and frame rates...Watching terrain draw bothers me(Soorta like Micropose's B17 2)

I'm running on 128 mb of ddr ram.
Course I'm also running win 98se.
I hear XP is more of a hawg.
Tweak your settings, drop texture to 256,
and load 1 per frame. Put details dead center for starters.
Make sure your running the lastest drivers for video & sound. DX9b, etc.
-
Mmxx list the rest of your system specs. I have a 1.7mhz and the 9700pro and my game runs fine. Maybe we can help you optimize your system.
-
P4 3.2
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
win XP Pro
512mb mem
Level of detail and displayed object size, both sit under the "T" in the word detail in the settings, this is approx 90% setting.
Ground detail set to max.
"Textures to load per frame" slider to 1
Video Settings:
unlimited FPS
1280x1024
Max Texture Size = 512
Terrain Mipmapping, Transitions, Horizons - all checked
Gamma = 1.0
Using Omega drivers i have AA and AF set at x4 all other options at max.
In tower i get about 60 to 70 fps depending on field activity, once in the air i get my monitor refresh rate which is 100 fps.
I can fight up high or in the weeds without any trouble.
Worth bearing in mind that until you have loaded all the textures required throughout the terrain you may get freezes etc.
I no longer get any freezes.

I wonder how many people are experiencing this, and give up right there?
If this is still an issue, It might be a good idea to mention it in the MOTD, for folks who don't read the boards.

it really really sounds like your computer has issues to me. Try cleaning up that mess first. Check your sound card driver (go to the vender and get the newest). Get the newest vid driver (i hope you didnt install the one out of the box). Then if you fit within HTCs minimum specs, call them and ask them whats up.
I have a gforce3 ti200 with 64mb and I get 71fps in the clouds and 36 near a fight (that is because I have antialiasing set to 2x, 4x is 71 in the clouds and 24 near the ground, off is 71 near the ground 71 in the sky). Sliders all the way over, unlimited shapes loading, blah blah blah.
-
Sound cards can also make a huge difference to fps.
I fitted a hercules sound card using a sensaura chip and it cut the fps in half on a slower computer compared to an old soundblaster Live.
It went straight back for a refund and the soundblaster was refitted.

Athlon Thunderbird 1.333 (clocked 1.40)
128 meg PC2100
Geforce FX5200 128 meg (overclocked w/ Omega Drv. Tool)
SB Live
No freezes. I am generally in the 60-80 fps zone with default settings. I can and have run with the three sliders set to maximum (fps drops to 25-30 though). Your specs are much better than mine - something else is at work here.
-
You can also get your DxDiag file and either post here or email to the tech person at HTC and ask for help. Who I believe is Skuzzy, he's helped me in the past but I dunno if that was out of the kindness of his heart, and attempt to get me to shut the hell up, or part of his official job description. (Personally I think it was a combination of #2 and #3 but that's besides the point.) :)
-
I have been working on dailing my system in for AH2 but I havent had much success. Before AH2 went Main game I was getting daily responses from Skuzzy, but now I assume he has over 300 or so people in my same position, it has been over 3 days since I recieved a response from him.
I will continue to try to get the game to run on my machine. I want to see the TOD game before I decide if I am to continue with AH. Needless to say I was extremely disgusted with what AH1 MA turned into, and I hope TOD will be a great cure for Country truces, & mindless skilless hordes.
Hopefully I will get my system running and HTC will get TOD running around the same time. I can THEN decide if it is worth playing. If the format of the game hasn't changed from horde or be horded, I wont play. No matter how great the eyecandy or flight model is.
-
A_Clown, if you sent the email on Firday afternoon then it would be a few days before I got to it. However, if the email is sent during the week, Iit will get answered within 24 hours.
If you did not get a response, then I did not get the email. Send it again.
I have found, since we released Aces High II, many instances of systems with gross amounts of spyware and viruses. In each and every case the system was performing well below its capabilites, but was much better once it was cleaned up.
One of the reasons looking at the DXDIAG output is to assess how a system should be performing. If it is below what it should be, then it can usually be salvaged with some patience and effort.
If your system is above the minimum specifications for Aces High II, you should be able to play it. If you are finding this not to be the case, then drop us an email, give us a call. Can't hurt and it might help.

Listen, I've gotten a PIII 450, w/ GF 420 *MX* 64mb, 256 RAM to produce a 25 FPS in AH2 on the runway, offline. Granted when I hit the air it drops, to best 15, unplayable. ;-( But it's a PII450, I don't expect it too do better.
If this machine can get 25 on the runway, a ATI 9800 with a decent CPU will get MUCH more.
You have a bottle neck somewhere, it could be in the BIOS, Buss system, AGP, driver settings and on and on.
Admittingly I am a former old AW Video Tech game staff geek. So I'm just throwing in my old hand at this. I have seen these symtooms before.
I have made many a machines sheeit an get it in my earlier days before AW death. If I can do it with a PIII 450 GF420MX you can do MUCH better with a Ati 9800.
YOUR job is to find the bottle neck. When you do, all the other tweaking you did on the way will come to light and that machine will pound nails through brick walls . Trust me here, keep the faith.
Personally, I would start in the BIOS. Below is a link to my old site which contains MANY MANY tweaks, and a BIOS page that can REALLY help you a lot. IF you have Windows XP there should be a page on which services can be shut down.
Most of all it reminds me of a bottle neck or background processes.
Also make sure there is absolutely NOTHING running in the background. This includes OE auto email checking and MS Office FindFast. this must all be disabled. What I do is make a new user desktop that starts up VERY raw, only mere basics in the background.
AH Tech Hangarhttp://www.icongrp.com/~stagemon/ah/
This site is currently being EXTREMELY reconstructed, and about to replace the old site soon. The new sight is going to probably shock a few people in it's size and interface, I think the AH community will really like it, even compared to the old AHTH site which is still in operation. I'm not going to go into what the new site contains, but it's the most monsterous site I've built yet. I think former AW pilots will love it because of the interface, but who knows. ;-)

wow, thanks for all the help guys.....really. I appreciate it.
But to be honest, Ive done all the checking, new system, nothing much on it, 512mb ram, and to be honest...
I have to do all the tweaks and clocks and all this other stuff, turn down the detail, turn off that, ect ect:
just to play one game? just to get it running normal I sacrafice all that was created to make the game better.
whats the point then for AH2? Im not the only one....there are many others
just dont have the time to do all this guys...this is supposed to be fun and Im doing more maintenance and IM PAYING FOR THE GAME....$$$ math doesnt work out for me...spending more time trying to fix it, than I am enjoying the pleasure of the game.
Thanks for all the help gentlemen......
I GIVE
Im tired....hope all turns out well in the future....

Ghosth, I have the same set-up and can't run AHII. Are you on a ATI9800? or what?
MwXX: Sounds to me like something else is wrong with your PC, cause you've got a great PC there.

Have you deinstalled the previous drivers of your vid card before installing the new ones? I've read many times that it caused the kind of problem that you're experiencing...

Someone just reminded me,.... are you running the proper power supply? It should be 400+ for that Video card.
Also, if it's an older Asus MB you might want to check for BIOS updates.
Check the specs on the AGP socket, some of these cards get all choked up if the AGP socket is under powered, or sending dirty data.
