As part of my police training, I got a one second stream of OC/CS spray in the face tonight.
Holy crap.
Talk about pain. The first five seconds you just sit there and say "Hey, this isn't so bad." Then it hits. For about five minutes, it was all I could do to force myself to breathe. Gasping, coughing, nose filled with snot, eyes slammed shut and excruciating pain each time I tried to open them. I remember thinking that if I just passed out, I'd go back to breathing normally and the pain would be gone when I woke up. We were quickly escorted inside, where we spent about 10 minutes in front of sinks trying to cool our faces and wash the burning sensation away. After about 15 minutes I could keep my eyes open and function pretty much normally, although my face still burned for another 15 minutes or so.
Now I'm sitting here, scared to take a shower for fear of washing some more of the stuff out of my hair and into my eyes/nose/mouth/face/peehole. Supposedly it'll evaporate after about 12 hours, so I'm thinking I'll go to sleep and take a shower in the morning.
Yeah, it really sucks.
Anybody else ever been on the wrong side of this nasty stuff?

Police Academy sounds fun! :lol
-
sprayed dog repellant I found in the backyard into the wind when I was a kid, only got a little, but it sucked!

wait until they zap you with a tazer!;)

When I went through my own training, I got a similar shot of it (it is required training to be able to carry it on duty in Ohio).
Nothing beyond minor irritation happened for awhile because I took somebody's advice and DID NOT BLINK (supposedly blinking stirs it around the eyes more)....but when it hit me...it hit me.
10 minutes after I got sprayed it finally hit me....essentially as Tarmac described. Yes I made a bad mistake and blinked a few times...OMG bad idea! The skin discomfort (strong burning feeling describes it well) is mild compared to the pain in the EYES....it feels like you are having nails driven through your eyes. AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO except wait.
The former US army/marine guys in the academy all agreed it was better to go through tear gas training than the OC spray.
Honestly it wasn't that bad. Yeah it hurts but it is only pain...no actual damage. I'd do it again :) Except I'd bring an older shirt....it turns your nose into a snot factory, lol. It was sort of fun listening to everyone use their choice explectives in turn.
Me being the pragmatic sort of guy I am I then went and washed my face off with alcohol pads rather than water. Surprisingly it didn't make it hurt any worse (nobody would believe me on this), and I think it spared me later as I had no issues with it "re-activating" when I washed up at home.
Tarmac--
I advise against taking a shower in the morning, unless you like pain. If you do take one, try to avoid getting your face wet. I recommend taking a washcloth and washing your face off in the morning very carefully, taking great care to avoid the area around your eyes. Several of my academy mates were still having issues with it even a couple days later.

I bet thats hell on contacts.

I always carry Pepper Spray when armed. Given the chance, I'd rather use that than my Glock.
-
Hehe Tarmac :)
Yes I have been sprayed a little on accident. Friend of mine was using it as hotsauce for a sammich - yes, he is retarded.

LMAO .. been there..
buddy is a police auxillary. we were at a drunken food binge at country kitchen about 2 AM one night. we waited about 45 minutes for a table LOL. there were 10 of us
he ordered an omlet. got feeling the need for spicy, so he pulled out his OC.
spritzed the omlet for a millisecond.
he made 1/2 our table get up, and 3 other booths leave the resturant fully LOL.
we were threatened to be removed until we bribed the waitress with $10 (man those chicks will do anything for a buck).
-
Tarmac,
Will you need to go through a second one? My younger brother went through police training and they had to get it twice. First was a get used to it experience and the second they were required to takedown and handcuff the "bad guy" after being sprayed.

If you’re into full body muscle cramps, the Tazer is great!
:p

got tear gassed in boot camp. not sure what that is supposed to teach you other than an amazing amount of snot can come out of your nose.
-
I've gotten a whiff of old-fashioned tear gas before. Ick.
I just finished up a case where a probationer hadn't been acting good and the probation office called in a local PD to help them get this guy.
Well, they got in the trailer, but he barricaded himself in the john. So they got the bright idea to squirt OC under the door. So now he's in there with a wet towel wrapped around his head and the trailer is filling with OC spray. Lots of fun. Finally they get in the john and for a second he thinks about resisting...I guess until he realized how pissed they were to be sucking in their own OC spray.
BTW, if you ever get in trouble with an officer who has one of those cool tazer guns, don't piss him off. They will zap the bejesus out of you in a heartbeat. Then they write in their reports, "The suspect came at me in a menacing fashion. I warned him to lie down and he refused. Next he advanced towards me again with his hands raised saying '**** you, I'm not doing ****'. At that point I deployed by X18 (whatever it is) Tazer. I waited until the red dot appeared on his chest and activated it. One bard hit him in the lower abdemon and the other in the right pectoral. Upon pressing the stud, the suspect 'planked' (they love that term...police-speak for he went really rigid) and fell down. After 5 seconds I release the stud."

I took a little of my wifes when she moved back to Germany. Sprayed it into old 3 liter took a little bit on my finger just to see what it did dabbed it in my eye. Said this aint doing crap, 2 secs later "fire! it burns!" I fall to floor "it burns! it burns! sweet mother of mercy! it burns.!"for ten minutes repeating that and feebly rolling around.,and my buddy is laughing his arse off, like I would. Later that day everything is better, memories of hte pain still make me shudder, Then my brother comes home, 20 minutes later from his room"AAAARRRRrgghhh It burns! my eyes my eyes!! screeech!" 18 y/o man screaming like a little girl. I carry pepper spray all the time now. Its more fun then just simply shooting a criminal.
-
I remember when someone round these here parts shot a can of pepperspray.
He was shirtless, I seem to recall.
-
Have done the required teargas drill in the navy and i did not like it at all. Some people dont react to that at all, but i did
Dont think ill try the pepperspray (on myslef anyway).

Has anyone been dosed with pepper spray and CS? Which is worse?

Oleoresin Capisicum Spray. Be thankful you experience it in training. When you get a secondary out on the road fighting a 6ft 4' gorilla built like a brick sh*t house, you will remember that you survived it and fight on.
I was under once such afore mentioned fellow on the floor of a narrow hallway after trying to arrest him for domestic violence. My partner, god bless her soul when aiming her OC at him, ended up spraying it all in my face instead.
Try being blinded, in great pain, under a refrigerator with arms whose only wish is to get his hands on your glock. As im still here to type this, naturally, I fought on. He got a liberal secondary dose in the process.
He went down like a big girl screaming and I made my arrest.
I've been hit with it a number of times. Golden rule for any cop, never give up when the sh*ts hit the fan.
Enjoy it in training. You will get feel a great deal more pain in the real world with someone using you as their punching bag at the same time. It wont stop everyone but it will hopefully buy you enough time to cause enough damage and live to win the day.

Pepper spray is much worse.
Been through the gas chamber numerous times in the military. You can actually get use to CS or mase. If you are pumped up you can shrug CS off. Pepper spray on the other hand is like hot sauce in your eyes.
-
friend doing the CRS riot police school in france told me they trained to huddle together (like in rugby) around a regular can of teargas for a few minutes...
-
I got a big dose of OC spray when I was going through jailer training. Glad I became a firemen.:D

My brother is a sherrif's deputy. He's told a similar account.
I don't get it. Why do they think you need to experience it? So you know what it's like?
Hell... next they can take you out back and beat you with an Asp... or better yet, maybe shoot you with a small calibre weapon. :D
...just to make sure you know what it's like.

I think they do it to avoid the "hehe, let's get Tarmac with this stuff and see what it does" mentality after they get issued with it.
As an example, I was playing paintball outdoors one time and a bunch of Macedonian guys who were all good friends were on one team. After we got our saftey instructions etc we were walking towards the field when the inevitable happened. One of the Macedonians let his buddy get ahead of him and then shot him right in the butt...from about a foot and a half away.
"Let's see what happens when I do THIS" mentality.
We had to wait almost a half an hour before those two idiots could be separated. Full on fisticuffs.
-
At least you guys get the real stuff. Before I made the switch to mailhandler I was a letter carrier for three years. They gave us that oil and cheyenne pepper spray. I sprayed a pitbull with it, he started licking it off his snout, he liked it.
-
" don't get it. Why do they think you need to experience it? So you know what it's like? "
There is a very real chance of being hit with it in the line of duty, so it is beneficial to be accustomed to the sensation (indeed, if you ever use it, you usually WILL get some of it on you). It IS possible to function through it. In addition, it gives us a very good way of knowing the sort of reaction to expect, having felt it personally and witnessed it happen to a number of other people.
I would much rather know what to expect, than to never get a whiff of it until I'm in a fight with somebody on the street.
Similar training is used for Tazers, stun guns, Asps or PR24 batons and even unarmed techniques used to control a suspect.
i can't carry a Tazer because I haven't been willing to go through with it yet....the prongs give me the heebee geebees. Gonna have to real soon tho...mebbe i'll post an AAR, lol.

In the Infantry they made us do 100 pushups in the gas room before we could leave, without the mask... that kinda sucked.
At my unit we used to spray cs or pepper on our hands and wrestle. Come to think of it, that kinda sucked too...>

I once walked through a crowd of hispanic skanks... in full perfumed regalia. I nearly passed out.

Crikey! The North American Hispanic Skank are not to trifled with. ;)
They can be exceedingly vicious.

I figured it probably was. Yeah, my CS experience is usually more of a case of being pissed off than anywhere near incapacitated. It's probably the same way my dog feels when I give him a flea dip.

I pepper sprayed a guy one night trying to arrest him. Long story short I ended up spraying both of us due to the fact I was laying on top of him. I was a good thing it shut him down or I would have been in some real trouble :)
I've been CS'ed and pepper sprayed, pepper spry is a million times worse.
Hope all goes well for you Tarmac

Pure handsomehunk on my part. We had a choice of a direct or indirect hit. I was really leaning towards the indirect when my "buddy" pointed some girls were taking the direct hit. So I stood there while Sgt. Shortmansyndrome blasted me from 3 feet away with a riot can that looked like a damn fire extinguisher. So then I choked, gagged, screamed, and cried for 45 minutes. I was happy not to **** myself.
-
Thanks for the advice and kind words, all.
I took a shower this morning, being very careful to keep water from running down my face. Head tilted back the whole time. No pain, except from the cold water (hot opens the pores and can re-trigger the stuff). I wasn't wearing my contacts at the time of the spraying, and put them in the next day around noon with no discomfort. All is well now, although I've had intermittent headaches for the last day.
The reason behind the spraying, we were told, is so that we aren't as surprised the first time we're sprayed with it on duty and know we can fight on. As an added bonus, if you're ever asked in court if you've ever experienced it, you can say that you know exactly what you were doing to the poor sap on the other end of that stream.
The academy only planned to only swab us under the eyes with the stuff, but being the foolhardy toughguys and gals that we are, we asked to take a spray instead. Might as well feel it full force, right? How bad could it possibly be? ;) Interestingly, we're the first class in the 6-year history of the academy that's ever asked to be sprayed.
The taser is coming sometime next month. :)
-
Experienced CS gas numerous times (retired Airforce).
It's pretty bad. Furious is right about the snot LOL.
Never had experience with Pepper spray, but I hear it's worse than CS.
I think I can carry on with my little life without finding out personally.
cheers,
RTR

There's a couple reasons you get sprayed with it in training. Not only so you can safely say "Yes, I've been hit with that stuff before" but also so you know what it's like. Count how many times you've seen both the perp and the guy/gal in blue get hit with it on Cops. I remember seeing one where they nailed a guy in a stairwell with OC from three different officers. Everybody got hit to some extent. All the officers had watering eyes, the camera guy couldn't hold the camera steady, and the perp was a bawling mess. It's pretty evil stuff.
Tarmac: wait until you have the Taser experiment conducted on your fuzzy butt. That'll leave an impression! One county sheriff got hit during training and wound up with a rather nice scar as a momento. Plenty of people heard about it and he's now known around town as "Sparky the Wunder Cop."
