Next week the four man hit squad of the Finnish virtual pilots will go wandering in the battlefields of the 1939-1944 wars (Winter War, Continuation War) of Finland-Soviet Union. We'll be participating in the 60 years memorial of Battle of Tali-Ihantala, which is the largest battle ever in the Nordic countries - the decisive battle, where the Soviet main offensive was stopped and Finland saved from conquest in summer '44.
We'll be looking on the old battlefields, listening and learning and hopefully having some good time too. And visiting these old Finnish towns, now part of Russia.
Going to be interesting. Photos etc will follow :)
The participants are me and OK from Icebreakers and Camo/Blaukreuz from LLv34, AH/FB-squad.
Our route:

Some of the wacky stuff you Finns get up to sure is cool.
Say Hi to Camo for me!
-
Very cool. Have a great time guys.

For some reason I am reminded of the classic TheOnion article:
Retro-Crazed German Youths Invade Poland
WARSAW, POLAND— In the largest nostalgia-driven military assault in history, 250,000 retro-crazed German teenagers and twentysomethings invaded Poland Monday.
The full article is no longer available for free, but you get the gist.

Jukka, can you post your waypoints with their current names? The 1939 map is too hard to read for me, especially with Finnish names.
I hope to intercept you guys on your way :) Do you stay in the hotels or just co camping with tents etc?
-
lol...I can see it now, the tour guide stating that a particular spot is where the Finns destroyed a particular Soviet force and Boroda interupting and vehamently denying the battle even took place.
This could re-start the whole affair for heavans sake. :p ;)

LOL! You have absolutely no idea of what Russians and Finns will do when they get together in a good friendly company ;)

Hello Pavel!
We'll end the first day at Sakkola, Kiviniemi; on second day we'll be at the Tali-Ihantala battle memorial and end the day at Viipuri; on third we'll go to Summa and end up the day at Terijoki and on the last day we'll go home through Siiranmäki and Viipuri.
We'll be staying at local hotels, it's not like we're travelling with tents on ;-)
And Curval doesn't really have a clue what would happen if we meet. Sauna, yes if possible, and vodka ;-)
The matter of deciding who won what is trivial by that time or forgotten already by all
-
I absolutely "have a clue"....I even called it a Banya, in defference to the Russian word for sauna.
It isn't my personal choice for a male bonding location, but to each his own.
As to the vodka....well you got me there, who would have thought it...Russians and Finns drinking vodka????? You learn something new everyday I guess.
-
Actually what I meant was that on personal level Finns and Russians get on pretty well ;-) Even when Boroda can be very, ahem, provocating we are pretty close to each other in real life and doubtlessly can argue for hours and hours on useless topics ;-)
Pavel, if you're around at Karelia next week it would be fancy to meet somewhere. Best bet maybe Viipuri, 2nd Jyly, evening. We'll be at hotel "Lemonka". July 3rd will end at Terijoki, hotel Leningradets. Our timetible and transportation is pre-arranged so we can't much wander off it :)
My email is still jkauppin@jmp.fi, mail me old pal.

Jukka, I'll try to join you in Vyborg on July 2nd. BTW, I have spent my childhood summers in Privetnenskoye near Zelenogorsk (Terioki). Haven't been there for maybe 25 years or more...
I'll bring some tasty stuff that is probably unavailible in Finland or Karelia ;)

Somehow I think the party you Gents will have will be memorable, even if you cant remember any of it ;)
Have fun

My main problem will be the electric train from Leningrad to Vyborg: i can't ride electrichkas without beer.
You can't believe how much will it take to make Finns and Russians forget what they did last evening :) But I admit it's possible :D
-
Pavel, great. I don't know when we'll arrive to the hotel but I'll email you, if you throw me your current email address.
I don't know if the hotel rooms are booked by the travel agency (Lomalinjat) or our names (Jukka Kauppinen and others) but we'll be there sooner or later anyway. My mobile if +358 40 730 0036, SMSs should get through, and if nothing else you can always leave a message to the hotel?
Looking forward for this! Hopefully meeting you at last ;-)
It is early takeoff for us next morning so we cannot make a heavy duty tour but something at least anyway ;-)
-
Have a great time guys. :D
-
Pavel,
Looks like we'll be at the town/hotel maybe around 1900, no clue of exact time. Depends on the traffic jam at the Tali-Ihantala memorial etc.
My mobile is +358 40 730 0036 if you're around.

I'm back in Moscow. Had a great time. Thanks, guys! I hope to meet you here soon!

I just came to work directly from a train. Still didn't develop film... Andrey Ushakov (he gave me accomodation in Roschino [Raivola]) said he'll post his pictures today. He joined us on Saturday evening in Zelenogorsk (Terioki), and was the only sober person because he was driving...

First pictures from Andy:

It was real great to meet these guys, in the beautiful evening of Karelia and having a small party on the beach of Gulf of Finland. Jum!

Beard, you should really try to cut down on the cigarettes. I know it's hard to say no to one when you're drinking.
PS: You sort of resemble my uncle victor when he was younger, and your name is the same as my grandfather's.

I know about smoking. BTW, I smoked a lot that days, it helps to repel mosquitos ;) But later I counted that I didn't break my usual one pack a day limit. There are very few photos of me without glass/bottle or cigarette.
My Uncle (the one who was a SAM/ABM officer) is Victor too :) I was named Pavel in honor of my Grand-Grandfather, who emigrated after Civil war and died in France in late 60s.

Don't you made paper planes and do another duel? :D
Or you should arrange duel by quantity of drinked bottles :)
