My wife wants to get a PDA, what would you recommend for a first PDA in the $150 range.

Mainly to download lists from the intardnet - my daughter has a food allergy, there are several groups that put together ingredient listings for various food products that you can download and she wants to have something to carry with her.

This is the min requirements that she is looking for :

PalmOS Handheld: Version 2.0 - 5.0 and 1Meg ram; Windows 9x/NT

Thanks

Go for Palm, any Pocket PC is well beyond the range you propose. Try a Palm or Handspring, they have entry-range units that may just be the right one for you.

I bought a Dell Axim X5 from ebay right out of the box. A bit more expensive, but it has all the memory you would need...if yo look you might find one in your range, but it's a strech to say that they're widely available at that price

Her requirements are far in excess for the use she wants to put it to, so I'm a little unsure over which takes precedence.

If it's the lists then I'd go with Cyrano's advice.

But before she decides whether to go palm or pocket pc, check to see which operating system the lists are compatible with. That may make the decision for you.

I use an IPAQ, which suits all my needs.

Good luck on your search!

[edit: there's always ebay for a cheap second hand one]

IPAQ here as well (4150), great for WiFi use, plus plenty of horsepower to deal with videos and such.

If she wants to go Windows, try the 1930, it's a bit over what you want, but it's a great Pocket PC for the price.

Holding hands and hugging are usually ok. If you start macking down in the corner, some people get a bit freaked out.

Oh, wait, the other PDA. I'd second Nilsen on the Zire. It's a nice one for the price range. Check with your local Office Max/Depot to play with a few. The folks I've dealt with there have always been helpful and friendly. CompUSA you've got a 50/50 shot at getting someone with a clue. Fry's Electronics, you might as well be teaching the salesperson.

Go to the dollar store and buy her a pen and a pocket-size notebook for a dollar.

Applaud yourself for not falling victim to the latest "tech-fad".

Spend the other $149 on your beverage of choice.  Life is good.

paper notebook is not the same as a PDA, not even close.

And I would recommend getting a PDA phone.  That way you get wireless internet just about anywhere and you can dial from your address book or from a phone number you get from a web search or an email, and it reduces the number of items you have to carry around.  My buddy's Treo is incredible and I am very happy with my dated Samsung which has been replaced by a newer model.

True, but its cheaper and is enough for most people even if they think they need some sort of electronic gadget. They want one, they seldom need one. Saw on some online site that a PDA is at the top of the list of things that people are likley to stop using after 6 months.

Smartphone? Not for me. I prefer having a bluetooth enabled PDA + bluetooth phone (my rig: HP ipaq 4150 + SonyEricsson T610).

Smartphones are not as good as a PDA for work and cumbersome as a cellular phone.

Cyrano those units I mentioned have full Palm OS.  They are just as good as any other Palm PDA.
Bluetooth or WiFi connectivity is worthless to me when I am out in the field or in the car.
If you want to talk about cumbersome, cumbersome is having to connect your PDA to your phone to get internet access!

Palm One Treo 600 looks promising if you need that kind of device.

I went on a golfing trip with one of my clients who had one of the Treo's, it was amazing what he could do with it from sending and recieving email to surfing the intardnet in the middle of the Ozarks.

I guess that depends on the rig, Funked.

With what I have, I just have to select connect, and within 3 seconds I'm connected to the internet, MSN Messenger, IExplorer, and all.

I just leave BT on in both devices and connection is almost 0 wait.

OK I misunderstood before.  You are getting IP connection on the phone and then sharing to the PDA via bluetooth.  Very cool.

I see what you mean.  I got a Palm for Xmas when I was in grad school and had no use for it and gave it away.
Now that I do real work it's different.  I'm always on a team and we use Outlook to keep our calendars and contacts and email etc in sync with other team members.  The PDA lets me have that information with me at all times and I can sync with my PC back in the office, even if I working on the roof of a building in another city.  Plus I get email, www, irc, aim, ym, msn, etc etc on it.  And games.  For me it replaces cell phone, laptop, appointment book, phone book and fits in my shirt pocket easily.  If I could only get GPS and an MP3 player on it I would be in heaven.
