Brave woman. She deserves better from her school.

Have to agree with ya, very heavy handed of the school administration. Maybe the ACLU will take this one?

On the bright side, she's brought her school under scrutiny. Coming from the valedictorian, people will be more than inclined to take her complaints seriously, and she'll most likely have her diploma in short order.

I wonder what the kid who graduated last in the class thinks of the place?

While sometimes I think people occasionally abuse the right of free speech, in this case, she was honest and said what she felt.

As far as the diploma, they have no right withholding it.  She more than met the requirements to graduate and earned the diploma.  She broke no laws, harmed noone, and owes them nothing.

I am sure a lawyer can get this cleared up soon enough.

While it's easy to applaud her honesty, the reality she will have to learn is that there is a time and place for everything, and brutal honesty at the wrong time will not further her career.  She needs to learn timing and context.

This is obviously a bogus story.  The only way speech is prohibited at a graduation ceremony is if the speech included some reference to God.  The NEA doesn't allow otherwise.;)

Not so I'm sorry to say>>>>the Teachers Association routinely "squelches" whatever isnt good for the teachers and their "cause" which is the increase in their pay and benifits packages, NOT the betterment of the student population

Denied her diploma? Can they do that? Just for what she said, seems odd to me.

The squeeky wheel gets the grease. Hopefully this will bring about change for the school. They can not withhold her diploma, they are just showing everyone what the students have been living with. I hate low level management with a god complex that does lousy work.

I dont see how they can deny her a deploma if she met the credit requirments.  Its a state school....they are governed by rules just like the students.  They cant just refuse a deploma.  I know guys that barely got their credits and they got deplomas....hell the school was happy to be getting rid of them.

And do you have some proof to back this up?
My father taught for 30 years and just retired. I watched the crap he went through both at the school and in the local paper from attitudes like this. Even after that amount of time the paycheck he got wasnt anything higher then a middle class income. I love people who rail on teachers like they're being paid millions. Starting pay is crap in Massachusetts, and most schools are forcing veterns into retirement so they can replace them with cheaper rookies outta college.

The associaton prolly had jack to do with this girls diploma. Most likely it was a knee jerk reaction from an adminstrator. I should know; i was suspended my junior year for writing a scathing email from home to friends about a new teacher i had and after the aclu showed up they had to remove the suspensiion from my record.

"they are just showing everyone what the students have been living with."

They proved her point for her if anyone had any doubts.

The Principal of the school should be fired.

they witheld her diploma?

HO HO. I think she just got herself a 'scholarship' up to her PHD with the money she can (and i think she should) sue out of the school.

And I agree, ,she DID understand the concept of timing very well. What she did may very well play a big role towards fixing the problems in her school.

As the Valedictorian she no doubt understands the value of hard work and appreciates the opportunities available to those who apply themselves. She probably is a conservative.

I could understand your skepticism MT if it was the New York Times that reported this story but it was the New York Daily News.

I would agree, number 1 she may be the valedictorian but look at the field for a measure of the competition.  secondly she's from the people's republic of new york a bastion of liberalism these people find no fault with each other not any that would be aired publically.  not a true story I'm sure.

The people in this story probably aren't conservatives.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Being gay I mean, not liberal. Aw what the hell, probably don't have a choice in being either. ;)

Actually I do, having been an educator myself at the college level and having dealt with the Massachusetts Teachers Association on numerous occasions.
