Title: Canadians go to the polls...
Post by: muckmaw on June 28, 2004, 12:54:06 PM
I'm surprised this is not bigger news.

Says on AP the Liberals look like they may lose, the conservative may not win, and the power may go to the Bloc Quebecois, which wants independence for the French-speaking province of Quebec.

According to AP: The Bloc has little in common with either the Liberals or the Conservatives and many political observers predict the new government will be so unstable that another election within the year is almost inevitable.
Who's winning?

The Liberals are promising balanced budgets and more spending on social programs while the Conservatives want to cut taxes while boosting defense and health care expenditure.

Nice to know some things are the same the world over...

Yours are more interesting.

If the conservatives where in power when Iraq was invaded canadian soldiers would have particpated.

We will likely have a minority goverment.

muck...there isn't any chance the Bloc Quebecois will win...I haven't seen the poll results yet..but they have no chance

New conservatives have a leader much akin to GW....the liberal party are in trouble because the newly elected liberal premier of Ontario broke several key promises shortly after taking office and the backlash against the federal liberals is forthcoming.

And as pongo says, American politics is far more interesting.
Having said that, i'm off to vote!

Wait, I thought if there is no clear cut winner, it goes to a 3rd party.

Is that right?

Does'nt seem to make alotta sense. If that was the case here in 2000, Hello President Nader!

No, they try to form coalitions.

It doesn't go to a 3rd party or anything like that.
What happens is, we will end up with a minority government.

IE a government that won less than 50% of the seats in the House of Parliament.

Either way we are collectively screwed as Canadians.

There are no honest parties to vote for, and in general politicians are just there to feed at the trough.

Ahh well..off to vote for the lesser of the evils.

Rat Bastages..all of'em.

If there is no clear cut winner, we get a minority government. That minority winner can then form a coalition with another party to create a majority govt. We have 4 main parties:

Liberal
Conservative
NDP
Bloc Quebecois

The main parties are the Conservative party and Liberal party. They are the only 2 that have ever been elected to power. They are fairly similar parties in their domestic policies, with a few noteable exceptions like the national gun registry.

The Liberal party has been in power for the previous 3 elections, with the same leader, who stepped down about 1 year ago. They have won large majorites, due to previous Conservative party debacles, and the inability to allign the right wing vote to the same party (more on that later). These large majorities have led to their ability to pass law with little opposition. When a party assumes control in Canada, and does it with a large majority, it can rule with little to keep it in check. We do not have the same checks and balances as the American system.

The Conservative party is traditionally more US friendly. They tend to support our neihbours policies more. As Pongo said, if they were our current government, we would be in Iraq. Untill very recently the right wing vote was separated into the Alliance and Conservative parties. The Alliance was a "grass roots" conservative party which grew out of western Canada, about 15 or so years ago, but was never taken seriously in the east, which is where the majority of the population resides. These two parties have now merged under the traditional Conservative banner, and now pose a threat to the current Liberal government

The NDP are a socialist party, far more left wing than any major party in the US. They usually get around 10-20% of the popular vote; today I think they will be on the higher end of that number. They are friends of unions, universal health care, and tax. While they have never won a federal election, they have taken many provincial elections. Provincially, they have had a habit of spending money they didnt have. They currently hold power in a few of the provinces.

The Bloc Quebecois are a federal party with an agenda of seperating Quebec from Canada. How they are allowed to function as a federal party is beyond me, since they basically a mutinous party. If they had representatives out here (also another strange thing about this party, they are only represented in Quebec, as far as I know) I would vote for them and encourage them to leave. I have been trying to create an impartial image of the electoral state in Canada, but the existence of this 'federal' party is a joke to me. This is not a knock against the province of Quebec. I have lived there before (Montreal) and have found it to be a beautiful provice. I just think this seperating business is stupid. Regardless of my opinions on them, they hold a lot of power due to the fact that 25% percent of Canada lives in Quebec, and the the Bloc is very popular there.

Whatever happens it will be close. The Liberals should be concentrating on Quebec, trying to hold or get back votes from the Bloc, who have apparently been surging. The Conservatives will likely win the west, but have to try to get into the Liberal stronghold of Ontario. I see a Liberal minority government, possibly forming a coalition with the NDP. I hope I am wrong, but if the Conservatives win, it will be a minority, and they have no one to form a coalition with. This would be detrimental to them in parliment, and make it difficult to govern with the the threat of losing a parlimentary vote.

Just in case you wanted a break from the US gong show. I realise your elections are important, but man, do they go on for a long time :)

Canada still isn't a US colony? What gives?

Do you think the Quebec Frenchies would betray the rest of you if the USA promised them independance after the invasion?

Still Newguy, all jokes aside. Again, that was very informative. I Sir applaud you for your time to lay it all out.

Np AWMac.

SLO, I realise that separating isnt as big of an agenda as it once once. It still seems however that the agenda is very slanted towards the best interests of Quebec rather than of Canada. I realise why they are there, no make sure that Quebecers have a voice, but what would happen if they won? I suppose this would be impossible with no representatives outside of Quebec. A provincial party I can see, but as a federal party, the concept seems odd. Perhaps I am out of touch with their current aims, they dont get much coverage out here unless they are trying to separate :) Well, I'm off to the polls!

You would, as in accept the (generous) US offer or do something unspeakable to me out of offense?

If the former, then when do you suggest we invade? What would you like Quebec independance day to be?

Yea, out in the west we dont get much balanced news of the Bloc. Up to you guys to really deliver a hard blow to Martin. It does look good for him now though, it appears that the Liberals have stolen a few Conservative seats in Atlantic Canada.

I am in Alberta and I must tell you I am greatly dissappointed with the results of the election.  It looks like the Liberals will be able to steal and lie for another 4 years.  And just so you know Quebec is free, in fact the voted not that long ago to remain within Canada, it's a nice part of our country, you should visit there some time.

Yea I'm not too happy either. The result was in before they tallied our votes. It looks like I was right with the Liberal minority, now the politics will begin. I heard that the Liberal camp is already phoning over to Jack Layton to congratulate him on his parties performance. Lets see how close the Conservatives can make it.

Of all the liberty ports I visited while I was active duty in the US Navy none treated us better than Quebec City.  The people of that city took us all in like long lost relatives, it was truly amazing.

to Quebec City.
