Title: How are your views now versus when you were in High School?
Post by: GtoRA2 on June 28, 2004, 09:22:28 PM
How are your views now versus when you were in High School?

I am less conservative now then I was in High school.

In high school I was pro gun I still am.

In high school I was anti new tax, I still am.

In high school I was Pro life.  I am now pro the right to be an irresponsible ass. IE pro choice.  I think it is wrong but I do not think my morals should be pressed on others.

In High school I was all for any military spending. I am still in favor of most of it, short of some really wasteful systems.

In High school I was not for gay rights, and I am still not for any extra rights, but think they should be able to merry.

In high school I was 100% for the death penalty, I am now not so sure.  I currently have no problem offing worthless scum like that guy in Florida who kidnapped and murdered that little girl, but I am starting to lean towards not trusting our legal system to get the job done right. (not send the wrong man to his death)

In high school I was blindly in favor of the US government, and loved my country with a blindness I think only a Naive kid can have. My country right or wrong.  I have grown out of that. I still love this country. I still think we stand for the right things and I still think we try and do the right things most of the times. But sometimes the US government can be ruthless and wrong, leading me to believe they should not be trusted with more power over our lives.

In high school I was not pro environment at all, I saw it as a bunch of *****y tree huggers trying to take my car away. I still see it that way in some cases, but am now Pro environmental laws, as long as they are reasonable.

In high school I was VERY anti drug. I am now for making the minor stuff legal and decriminalizing it all. The war on drugs is a waste of time and money.  Tax it and use the money for treatment and education.

In high school I was indifferent about the separation of church and state. I am not adamant, that this is one of the most important things we need to enforce, fairly, not just against Christians. I do not want to live in a country with laws right out of the old testament or the Koran.

So in high school I was a republican I suppose, I think I am now more middle of the road.

Pro gun... It was a toy. Now... ambivalent.

Taxes... Taxes? I can't remember concerning myself with taxes. I made $2.20 an hour. Now, I think sales taxes are evil.

Pro-choice then. Pro-choice now.

Military spending. Didn't much care then. Now, I think we spend too much (this coming from a DoD employee... go figure).

Gay rights... then NO. Now... equal rights for all.

Environment. As a kid... didn't care. Now, i'm a bit of a tree-hugger.

Drugs. Then... all for 'em. Now... I'm all for 'em.

Church... then, I thought it was a great place to pick up girls. Now, I think it's probably still a great place to pick up women. ;)

so... Then... Generally too uninformed to decide one way or the other... Now, probably libertarian.

Good responses Sandy!

LOL I have always been opinionated, lol so back them (12 or so years) I had an opinion on everything, and my dad, as much of a bastard as he was, was prolly my biggest influence.

Luckly the Drunkeness didnt rub off! :D

LOL Pork!

Neat post. Ok, here goes:

Pro-gun then, still am but for different reasons. (I no longer think the government is out to get me LOL).

Adamantly pro-life then, now I'm pro-choice.

On taxes and social issues, I'm more or less the same. Work for those who want work, help for those who can't work, to heck with those who won't work. Taxes have never been much of an issue for me personally anyway.

On the death penalty, I was for it but now I think it's lost most of its deterrent value.

Environment: Pretty much unchanged. Let's protect what we have, but let's be reasonable and sensible about it.

Gay rights: I used to be pretty lenient on this one, but now I think the issue should have never reached any form of legislation. Keep it in the closet.

Church and state: I used to think it was ok to force religion on people since at the time I was pretty religious myself. Now I'm more of the opinion that it's an individual initiative and right. Wanna pray? Do it. Wanna stop the world cause it's time for everyone to pray? Wrong.

On the drug issue, I was guilty of certain things in HS and early into college like alot of people are. Now, I can't believe I was ever such an idiot.

Registered Republican senior year of HS. I still am, but I'll never march the party line with blinders on.

In high school, I was a strong follower of the humanistic existentialism of Jean-Paul Sarte, but then I started looking into the possibility of zero point energy and fundamental particle pairs coming into and out of existence in a boiling sea of quantum fields.

Then the development of string and then m-brane theories started causing some controversy in the field of quantum theory with the loss of determinant lengths shorter than the Planck length, and now I don’t know what to think.

Check Costco or Sam's Club for a Brisket. Don't buy the real big ones; they come off old, tough cows. Look for one around 8 pounds, less if you can get it. Better to smoke two 7's than one 14!

in HS i was ultra conservative. even broke up with my girlfriend at the time because she had a cigarrett.

i was pro life

i was pro free speech in music (kind of not going with my other leanings).

i was against joining the military because i didnt want to be told when to get up, go to bed, and stuff like that. i was extreemly independant. i still respected anyone in the military, actually admired their emotional strength for doing what it takes to be in the armed forces; and supported the gulf war fully (graduated in 1991).

i was anit tree-hugger hippies. i hated the hippy Edie Brickell and New Bohemians listening chicks that didnt shave their pits and the wussy guys that tried to make me seperate my soda cans and bottled and stuff.

hmm pretty much nothing has changed, except maybe my leanings on music. ice T's cop killer song went too far, and that changed some of my views. other than that its all the same, some convictions are even stronger.

Holden,

I know what you mean.  The development of Allen Guth's inflationary theory, plus recent studies postulating the existence of a parallel brane less than an electron removed from our own and interacting with it, has only added to the confusion.

Wish they'd make up their damn minds.

guns - I think they should be less regulated than now, this hasn't changed

taxes -  Back then I believed all the good things they told me about the socialist state in school..

military - I've always taught we spend too little, even more so now.

abortion - I've never been against it.

gay rights - Back then I didn't give it much thought, now I think they should have equal rights.

death penalty - I've always been against it because of the innocent who will certainly die.

government - See "taxes".

enviroment - I'm a bit more enviromentalist than back then.

drugs - I was a little anti-drug, but now I believe that the only solution is regulation rather than ban.

church and state - I've never been religious but I was a member of the church back then. I've always been for separation, which we don't have.

immigration - Back then I was outright racist. I'm no more racist, but I don't think we shouldn't take too much people we don't need.

By our standards I was in the middle back then, now I'm in the right at least when it comes to economics.

I was not as kind or sensitive in high school as I am now.

am not pro abortion.. think it is simply killing in late term... not against killing but think people should own up to it.   they usually have to sooner or later anyway.

gay rights?  no such thing.  they are people they have people rights.

environment.  we should use it but not willfully destroy it.. that goes for littering too.  we should replace as much as we take when we can.   the only real solution is a good plague or war tho.

guns... allways figured they were a tool.  A much needed tool so long as there are bad people in the world... turn on the news if you think the bad people are going away any time soon... I think they have gotten more sociopathic if anything since high school.

I'd probably be more interested in her daughter.

This is an interesting topic. I have my twenty year high school reunion coming up in three weeks, and I was emailing with a friend of mine from high school who was the working definition of a Liberal Democrat way back then. He is now a card carrying Republican. I would never have thought that possible, but people can and do change.

As for me......

Guns- Then, pro gun control. Now, sitting on the fence, undecided.

Capital Punishment- Then, against. Now, completely for capital punishment. Let'em fry!(yes, I would pull the switch)

Abortion- Then, Pro choice. Now, Pro life. Funny how having your own child can change one's perspective on the sanctity of life.

God- Then, chronic doubter. Now, chronic doubter. Agnostic, I suppose.

Taxes- Then, didn't care. Now, I see taxes as a neccessary evil, although I believe a balanced federal and state budget each year should be mandatory.

Military- Then, we spend too much. Now, we spend enough, but are we spending it on the right things?

Environment- Then, tree hugger/whale saver. Now, tree hugger/whale saver.  Death to Amreekan SUV's!

Gay Rights- Then, equal rights for gays. Now, equal rights for gays.

Drugs- Then, never tried them. Now, never tried them. Anti-drug, I guess.

Immigration- Then, what? Now, no problem, we could use more Canadians in Minnesota.

Education- Then, pro public education. Now, pro public education.

Unions- Then, pro union. Now, pro union.

Political party- Then, strong Democrat. Now, Independent.

So most people think I'm a republican.

Hmm interesting banana!

You had a few I didn't

Imagration. Then I was all for cracking down on ilegals. Now I am all for cracking down on ilegals, and closing the borders. I think it is even more important now, since terrorists I am sure know they can walk right over the southern border.  I am also for imagration reform. We need workers to work the fields? Set up a program for it and make it all legal so we can do background checks. ETC

Education I was pro public school, I am now for school reform and or vouchers. I think schools should get back to thebasics teach kids about reading, writing,  math,  history and science. Leave "life lessons" for the parents and the universities.

Unions. Anti then, and anti now. I think the government offers most of the protections unions were needed for back in the day.

When I was in high school I could swim a 100m in :58 seconds. Now I swim it in 1:08.

In high school a meal at McDonalds consisted of 3 big macs, 3 large fries and a large drink (they always used to ask if I wanted 2 more drinks thinking I was ordering for 3 people). Now a meal at McDonalds consists of a chicken salad and bottled water. (And Big Macs just do not taste as great as I remember).

In high school I owned a Ford Mustang and a Honda CB900F motorcyle. Now I own a Ford pickup truck and an ultralight. (Might be buying a Cessna 182 soon though).

In high school $100 was a lot of money. Now I head to the bank machine if I am down to that.

A perfect night out in high school was a Movie and Baskins and Robbins after. Now it is watching a DVD in bed with my kids.

Yes have a daughter 5 and a son 3 (and another who is 1 but he is just a pain in the bellybutton if he gets up on the bed so usually we wait till he is down for the night).

I have seen both Harry Potter movies about a dozen times and know pretty much every Scooby Doo episode by heart.

Nothing is nicer than laying beside your kids watching them munch popcorn and having a great time.

Of course I am on my side of the bed so when my wife gets in later to go to sleep it is her side that has all the salt and popcorn kernals under the covers.

I know that the years when your kids think you are the greatest and all they want to do is be with you do not last for long. I am cherishing every second.

In HS I didn't care about politics.  I still don't.

In HS I didn't care about the stock market.  Now the only stocks I care about are the ones in my portfolio.

In HS I wore the latest trends.  Now my clothes are all out of style.

In HS I had steady dates.  Now I only have one.

In HS I had abs.  Now they're buried under too much Outback Steakhouse "chocolate thunder" desserts and fried food.

In HS I drove a car with a big engine and crappy gas mileage.  Now I drive a SUV with a big engine and crappy gas mileage.

In HS I could go to the beach every weekend. Now I spend my weekends doing housework.

In HS I couldn't buy porn.  Now I can, but I don't because my "steady date" will beat the crap out of me.

I was a democrat in high school but Jimmy Carter made me re-think my ideas.  Reagan was the one republican that pointed me the "right" direction.

Guns- I didnt own one so I pretty much didnt care if anyone did. Now I think that its a very important right and regulation is a not a good idea.

Abortion- I was pro choice, again because it didnt really affect me.  Now I am pro life but I wouldnt vote for a canidate based on his view.

Taxes- I have always thought they were too high and I still do.

Environment - I was and still am for a clean, healthy planet.  I drive a high milage, low emissions car or a motorcycle.  We recycle as much as is possible considering our local goverment is not really helping much.  On the other hand your average enviromentalist is not only pro environment but anti capitalist.  The Kyoto agreement is BS period.

Health care- teenagers dont get sick much so again, I didnt think about it.  Today I prefer a free-market system to a state run option.  Lowering the cost is a major problem. but when has the goverment ever run anything cheaply.

National defense - It was Vietnam and I had two brothers who served.  Many of my friends thought the military was a bad thing, I didnt agree then I dont agree now.  Iraq has convinced me that in future conflicts most of Europe is not going to support the US no matter what the circumstances.  We will need to have the force to go it alone and I would be willing to pay more taxes if it was directed towards the military.

Drugs- I have always thought they should be decriminalized and or legalized.  Tax the heck out of them and use most of the money for rehab and the rest for the military.

Death penalty- I was against it but now I am biased.  The murder of my brother was a powerful argument for the death penalty.

Imigration- always pro but with restrictions.

sex - I was for it then I am for it now :)

Being from my Miami it was a daily "up coast" trip to anywhere from the North Jetty at Ft. Pierce to Riviera Beach unless South Beach was pumping.  when the old South Beach Pier was there Miami offered good breaks when the winds were on shore.  The only days I actually show up for school were test days my last two years.  I was stationed at Mayport aboard the USS Bigelow (DD 942) and when we were in port I would surf over by the "E" Club.  St. Augustine to the mouth of the St. Johns were great breaks.  I had a 7'6" Plastic Fantastic pintail and a 6'8" Hobie Positive Force IV.  The Hobie was one of the first twin fins available and it was awesome on small days.  I still surf on occasion but only when we go on vacation and now I use webbed gloves (I know, I know).
