Post by: Raptor on June 29, 2004, 11:46:52 PM
Just read AWMac's post about his son. Post your worst injury... and what you were doing to get it.

Myself, I broke BOTH of my arms at the exact same time my second year of snowboarding. Now I have been snowboarding for 4 years and Im more reckless, though I havent had any injuries since then.

Trying to follow Gunslinger's recipe for BBQ chickens. I was OK up to the point where I drank some of the beer out of the can, put in the herbs in and whatnot, but got confused on which bellybutton the cans should be inserted into- mine or the chicken's.

The first can wasn't too bad but unfortunately we were cooking two chickens, and that second can flat tore me up.

You'd think Gunslinger, being a Marine, could give better directions than that.

Nearly cracked my skull open on a rock.  Was snowboarding in West Virgina.  There was no snow other than on the slopes and about a 2 foot drop off to each side.  Some 16yr old punk came flying in front of me I lost my edge and went straight off the slope.  Landed on my backside, left side of my face scraping said rock and the back of my skull hitting the base of a tree.  Was knocked unconcious for 10 minutes, broke an arm and fractured a vertabrae.  I came out lucky if I would have landed one inch to the left my skull would have landed on a HUGE rock (the one that my face barely scrapped).

I have had a few more dramatic injury's, many that would make better stories.  the worst by far (as far as lasting effect) though is the stupidest, weirdest, and the one I'm recovering from right now (14 months so far).

just walked on to a freight elevator at work and the idiot running the thing pushed the button to close the door before I was on, the door hit me on the head.

that was it, no big deal, until a few days later when I couldn't move my head to a straight position or get out of bed.  then a week later came the headache, )worst pain ever leading to blindness at times)  that lasted over a year of 24/7 pain (with the exception of a few 4 day breaks after epidural injections into my spine) anywhere from 75-200mg of morphine a day just to take the edge off the pain, nothing could actually control it.

about a month and a half ago I finally found a Dr who figured out what the root of the problem was, so now, after a year delay, I'm finally starting to improve.  down to 15-60 mg of meds a day and it actually takes the pain down to a level that I can function like a real person.

things are looking up.

Worst?

Broken neck @ C1.   I was extremely lucky to not have severed the spinal cord as such an injury at C1 would have been fatal almost immediately.   It took several months to fully recover, but regardless I was one of the fortunate few.

It was a car accident.  Worthless little car and I'll never risk my life in such a deathtrap again.

Been in a couple high speed crashes.
Passenger in a '72 Mustang that got t-boned (on my side) by a '71 Camero going 70. Concussion, twisted back and neck, minor cuts and bruises.

Driver in my '83 Shelby Charger. I still do not remember this, but the accident report said I went wide in a curve on a 2 lane farm road going well over 100. The car slid down into the ditch, shot across the road, got airborne and cut down a 7 inch oak tree. I was ejected and wound up about 30 yards from the car. I was wearing a seat belt.
Concussion, twisted back and neck, minor cuts and bruises.

I've been very lucky.

The same here except it was C2.
A tree ran out in front of my car.                                                Two months with an aluminuim bracket screwed too my head and I was fine.

Dislocated my elbow and fractured it in 3 places.  Didn't need surgery, so no scars.  There are bits of cartilage floating around in it so I can hear and feel a "crunch" when I move it.  Other than that, nothing major.

Few years ago I backed out of my drive way to be hit by someone going 55mph in my neighborhood which is 25mph. I didn't even see the car coming as there are a few cars parked out on the street totalled my Avalon.  It gave me a good headache since I hit my head on the driverside window. It spun my 3600 pound car around and I ended up in the middle of my own yard.

And to top it off.. the cop gave me a ticket for failing to yeild while backing. And the other guy for wreckless driving. And to top it off.. I got a speeding ticket 10 days later. ARGH!!

I was riding on the back of a friend's bicycle when I was a kid.  The bike didn't have any footrests so I put my feet on the bolts that stuck out from the sprockets on the back wheel.  As we went down a really steep hill my right foot slipped off the bolt and when I tried to put it back my big toe got caught in the wheel.  I wasn't wearing shoes.

The back wheel locked up when my toe got caught and we slid for about 50 yards with my toe being the only thing preventing the wheel from turning.  We left a 50 yard long black strip on the road from the tire.

Amazingly I didn't lose my toe...almost though.

The only time in my 31 years I ever broke a bone.  I was only 2.5 yrs old.  I fell off of a slide and broke my left collarbone.  After averaging 1/2 gallon of milk a day for the last 20 years, I have yet to have any calcium deposits or breaks.

Oh, lazs, I agree with your advice.  I played soccer for 13 years (6 all year round) and have always rested for a few and am back out there.

i guess my "WORST" would be back when i was 16. Me and a group of 8 guys 2 girls were skating (skateboarding) and a 12 ft vert ramp. I had skated the ramp a few times and had no problems droppin in and grinding the cope and doing some airs,  get got toward the end of a longer run and decided to do a "Rock-in-roll"(when u get to the top of the ramp you put the board on the deck up to the back truck, then turn 180 ands go back in the ramp)

Front truck clipped the Cope and i fell 12 ft to my head!

came to 15 min later holding a coke and a bag of beef jerky sitting on the side of the ramp.  Friends said i hit the deck then got up stumbled off the ramp then colapsed (i dont remember a thing)

Had a mild concussion. (never did goto the doc for that one though)

Back in basic training jan 91..  a hero i was sparing with kicked my kneecap out of its spot with a combat boot.  Went down and got back up and kicked his bellybutton but my knee was all "sloshy".  That night it was getting stiff so I layed it out straight.  This was a good idea. The next morning it was all black, blue, red and green and would not flex at all.  I had 3 weeks left to advanced infantry school and there was a war starting up so I did not want to go on sick call.  I spent all day of the next 3 weeks banging my foot on the ground on an ongoing basis to keep my knee numb enough to walk on.  Managed to do 15:12 on the 2 mile run running peg legged.  Never saw my kneecap from the swelling for 4 months until after the surgery.

Promptly shipped off and caught a virus while stationed in Germany that wrecked my heart.  After repeated heart attacks starting at age 21 and having a defibrilator installed in my abdomen I keep having heart attacks but for some reason am still alive.  Dying sucks.  Having your faced rubbed in it over and over again sucks more.  Sometimes I wonder why I bother.

broke my upper are really close to the shoulder joint. Broke it right off and then the joint portion dislocated.
I was showing off for a pretty girl and things when terribly wrong.
Couldnt tell what was wrong for sure but I was embarrased and walked away to try to shake it off.
That really hurt. And it hurt for a long time after. They couldnt or wouldnt cast it so my arm was wrapped to my side by tensor bandages for months and months. Nothing left of it when I got it out. couldnt even lift it.  I got in the army with it about a year later, I never got full mobility back I can lift it forward or back but canot raise my hand over my head from the side.
I learned then if you show doctors and nurses that you have a high threashold for pain they will test the threashold.

My Dad used to have one of those Big Chevy Vans, With a Bed above the Drivers and Passengers Seat. He was out to Sea, and my mom and sister were camping at the MCAS in Virginia Beach, Cant remember the name off hand.

But I was getting out of bed and fell, I hit my face on the corner of the oven on the way down. Ripped my nose so where it was just hanging from the top.

I think it was 86 or 87, so I was 5 or 6.

Broke a pinky playing volleyball. My favorite injury is the one on my leg. I went to dive for a ball while playing basketball and i cut my leg on the bleacher, leaving a huge gash that went from my ankle to my knee. I had a scar there for a couple years, but it's gone now. :( I wanted it to stay so I could show it off.

August 26 1970, Pearl Harbor...A Day that will live in Infamy.

I was 12 and it had just finished raining outside. The Sun came out and so did alotta kids from the age of 10 to 15. We all wanted to play softball but the portable baseball backstop was about 30 yards away from home plate.  No problem, we'll just move it.  The wheels were inoperatable so we decided that there was enough of us to lift it and cart it over. We all got around it and things were okay for the first 10 yards or so. Did I mention that it had just finished raining? Well some of the littler guys were slipping and falling which put the burden of the weight on all that were left. I remember someone yelling out "Look out it's falling!" Just then both my feet shot upwards and the baseball backstop fell on my head. Crushed my nose, cheekbones, fractured skull 3 places and both upper and lower jaws fractured.
Spent 6 hours in surgery, 5 days in a medical induced coma and 4 Months in the hospital. 2 retuns for plastic surgery on right eyelid.
Still have many scars from that one.  Kids are tuff and rebound quickly. :)

Broke an arm in second grade climbing a fence.

In high school drove my '72 VW bug in front of a volvo thinking my two-way stop was a four-way stop.  Volvo t-boned the driver's side and I was knocked unconcious for about 10 minutes.  Don't remember anything between the screeching tires and finding myself sitting in the ambulance.  Thank God no one drove SUVs back then or I would have been in a world of hurt.

Of course, compared to the stories above, I feel really lucky.

My ride to hospital came a week after I climbed out of my wrecked car. My neck hurt like *** but I didn't know I had broken it, neither did the incompetent quack I saw 4 hours after the crash.
I tried walking it off for a week before getting a second opinion  but it didn't work and I got tired of holding my head in my hands.

I wasn't banged up enough for critical care and was in and out of hospital within four days. These days a broken neck can be fixed nearly as easily as a broken arm or leg as long as the spinal cord ain't damaged.
I know bones are trickey. An orthopedic surgon gave me a sermon on the subject. If you try to ignore a break it wont heal up right. If you leave it too long before you get the bone set, tissue grows in the fracture which keeps the bone from knitting back together properly.
