Well my monitor failed me today, just died on me. Tested a backup monitor and sure enough it worked. I was told my tech support that my monitor was working to hard with refresh rates or something. Now I am in fear to play on this monitor because it is 3x as old, and I figure it will break just as fast. Anyway to prevent this from happening?

Don't plug it in .... plugging it in can lead to problems.
-
Do not excess 75 Hz.
-
Dont get such a beast computer.:D
-
Not sure what else you could do but set the refresh rate to 72 and hope for the best. GL bud. :)

Whats your price range and what do you do with it?

19" or 21" CRT is your best bet for gaming.
Sony, Hitachi, Viewsonic, NEC and IIyama are all excellant choices for CRT monitors.

HP P1100. Hands down the cheapest and best 21" monitor I could find. We had 5 between me and my friend, I had one finally die but the replacement is good as new.
2 sold on ebay for $80 recently, I didn't check shipping rates. Pry $75, but that's still well worth it.

Here's a great monitor for gamers ( check the specs ) that is priced competively.
Samsung SnycMaster 1100df (http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/FlatCDT/Monitor_FlatCDT_1100DF.htm)
I'm very happy with this monitor.

Or buy 3 21" HP's for the same price, or just 1 and blow the extra $400 on a brand new ATI 9800XT card. Or if your feeling kinda crazy, 5 bottles of 18 year old scotch and a Opus X.
I can't believe I'm broke. People just are trying to throw money away. All ya have to do is take it. Now I'm mad at myself.

My old 17" dies about two weeks ago and this was a nice deal. Should bide me over till flat screens come down in price more over the next few years.

I heard somewhere that if you get an LCD you may have problems with fast paced games burning images onto the screen because the pixels cant change color fast enough...?

No problems with that. Plasma displays have had/has the problem with images beeing burnt into the screen.
If you mean something we call ghosting, then yes. That is only a problem with lw quality displays tho.
