Title: July 4 - BBB!
Post by: Toad on July 03, 2004, 11:15:48 PM
Beer!  BBQ!  Blues!

It don't get no better!

OK, OK.. I started early. Kid came home from collig in FL, said he's been under extreme stress. No place in Orlando knows how to make decent BBQ.

So, yeah, I started a day early.

Put the 5lb tender brisket in the secret marinade. Rubbed down a short end of pork ribs.

Boiled the Brats in Beer and onions.

Fired up the ECB smoker. Used the beer from the brat cooking along with apple juice and 13 secret herbs and spices in the water tub on the ECB.

Smoked the brisket, ribs and added the brats and a bit more wood right at the end.

Homemade coleslaw, pit beans, steak fries and ALL THAT BBQ washed down with Boulevard Pale Ale, Irish Ale, Wheat and Lager.

Muddy Waters last televised concert on the Big Screen.

OoooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooh  YEAH! A good time was had by all.

So what y'all doin' for the 4th?

Poor fellow.  I suppose you could go kill a reindeer and smoke a brisket, substitute some vodka for the beer and download some good blues.

But sit at home and "mind your business". You're choice of course. Probably should use lotion though.

Sounds great Toad. Going to my friend Erics house to celebrate my birthday with another guy we work with who's is the 5th.

I start the smoker and my first brisket at 6:00am sharp, hope the internet has proper cooking instructions.

Went to Winco last night and loaded up on Brats, new Red Hook Beer ones, should interesting, some Tri Tip, Burgers, and the Oriental wives have gotten ribs from somewhere and will certainly put another 20 side dish show on.

No fireworks though, the hills were burning down a day or 2 ago, so maybe watch the Nuggets fireworks from his roof.

Pry watch the new Black Label Society Zakk Wyld DVD though. Blues are good, but gotta go with Zak on this one.

Here is where I will be tomorrow.  Burgers and dogs on the grill, queso and pico de gallo on the side; I don't like to work too hard at cooking whilst lounging.

The wife and I decided to have a potluck party.  Tomorrow my grilling duties include:

4 racks of ribs (thinking of marinating them overnight....not sure but want to try somthing different plus I dont have the time to smoke them)

3 packages of 20ct Hamburgers wich I am gonna add a rubb to

4 bags of chicken probably bout 20 lbs total

20ct package of stadium dogs (the long kind)

PLUS i'm helping with the beans and the hot wings.

To wash all this glorious chow down we got a KEG of Coors Light.

YUP its gonna be a great day tomorrow.....most of my shop is coming and half the neighbors.

At 9pm the base has a fireworks show wich we will be able to see easily from my back yard.

GOD BLESS THE USA!

Went to Lake Erie beach cottage with friends. Drank Captain Morgan rum, had a few burgers and beans, watched the bonfires and fireworks down the shoreline and won 10 bucks throwing horseshoes. A  very nice day indeed.

Happy Birthday United States of America!

Land of the free. Home of the brave.

Would like to see the Mets sweep the Yanks but my mom wants to have some "thing" at jones beach.  She's closed her store for a couple of days so I can't say no.  Like most new citizens(passed the test in 2000) she loves her US holidays.

we have the blues festival going on this weekend (every 4th of July),  it's always great, 2 stages (so no waiting between bands, and if you have back row seats for this band you'll front row for the next), about 12 hours of music a day for a $5 admission.

I think I'll head downtown this afternoon, and stretch out on a blanket in the park, while I catch some good tunes and wait for the fireworks to kick off at dark.

We have started early ourselves. Since we RV fulltime now, bein retired and all, we are continuing to kick back and take it easy. In the RV park at Ft. KNox KY. right now. Had fajitas, both chicken and beef with fresh refried beans, home fries with LOTS of onion, spicy guacamole, salsa and a special jello cream cheeze desert. Oh yeah plenty of Iced tea. The Mich nut brown ale was for later.

Today is up in the air yet. Don't know what I'll do besides having slept in until 10:00 AM. It's a tough life but someone has to do it. ;)

Get you a big can of Bush's Homestyle Baked Beans (the brand, not the President's.)

Now add the onion that you chopped up and boiled with the brats and beer. (Remember, I drained the brats/onions/beer through a sieve and used the liquid in the water tank on the smoker. Now use the onion in the beans.)

From a previous meat smoking session, toss in about a half cup of "trimmins". The last time you smoked a brisket, you should have saved all the little crumbs, bits, pieces ( go ahead and chop a few slices to have enough) that collected on the cutting board when you served. Now's the time to use them with the beans. (Note: you want MEAT here, not just chunks of fat. A little fat is nothing to worry about, but we're looking for 90% MEAT here.)

Throw in 3-4 tablespoons of brown sugar.

Add a healthy shot of Worcestershire sauce, maybe as much as a tablespoon.

Now about 2-3 tablespoons of a good, spicy brown mustard.

Last, add your favorite BBQ sauce. To taste; just pour some in and stir a few times till if tastes "right".

Bring all this to a simmer in an old pot. Because after it simmers, move it out to the smoker and let it sit in there for an hour or two while the brisket finishes out. The old pot gets all "smoked up" but hey, this is why it is kept around.

Enjoy.

Our little town (150k) puts on a free July 4th concert every year. They usually get the "used-to-be's" or the "nearly-were" bands. Sometimes it's pretty good stuff though.

America last year, Three Dog Night before that. Today we get to see the Grass Roots.

Have a good one all.

Just got back from Jones beach. Fun little BBQ with about 20 people. Only canned beer we had was Coors :'( (http://home.ripway.com/2004-3/80979/b7.jpg)
It worked out alright (http://home.ripway.com/2004-3/80979/b2.jpg)
We had a bunch of other drinks but mucho Coors   (http://tinypic.com/bozn)
(me in the white shirt)
Buzzed, dirty, and burned.   (http://tinypic.com/bp09)
Believe it or not, my MOM joined us in a round. Should have bowed out to take a picture but hopefully, someone else did.

Nothing wrong with Coors although I only count a 12 pack and there looks like 7 or 8 of you there.

I went flying in my ultralight.

Took off just after 7 am and flew for almost 4 hours. Came back after 12 noon (landed a few times to meet with friends) and the thermals were out. I climbed to 9000 feet and above a broken cumulus layer and although it was cold up there the air was totally smooth.

My landing was not bad at all considering the bumps but I felt like a 747 pilot seeing the field way off in the distance from that height.

Had quite a few adventures (do you know that a portable Icom A5 radio can receive and transmit clear as a bell over 100km from 6k alt?) met people at a few fields that also own trikes. Talked to quite a few PPL pilots at the airports we visited. They were fascinated by my trike which has big aircraft tires and a 100hp engine.

I don't have a pic of what was in the coolers(had 5 of them). Along with the bottled beer we had enough Coors for about 8 rounds+ normal drinking.   Hey, what happened to my last pic? the one of my sunburned face?

You call that little?

Anyway, Fourth went great here in West Virginia. Shot off some Bottle Rockets and such. I always head to Ohio or Pennsylvania to get the good stuff, But this year I figured I would tone it down a tad and stick to the light stuff. Drove over to Marietta anyway though :D

West Virginia Firework laws are a joke.
