Title: Fastest auto speed
Post by: xrtoronto on July 05, 2004, 11:54:31 PM
What's the fastest you have done on a highway in either a car or on motorcycle? (either driver or passenger)

For me it would be a friends brothers Barracuda going north on Hwy#400. I can freely admit I didn't enjoy it. I was in the back seat and white knuckled all the way:) The fastest reading I saw on the speedo was 130mph.

I probably would have enjoyed it if I had been driving!

That had it all, Twin turbos, AWD, 4 wheel steering (at higher speeds).  Held the benchmark on R&T's skidpad for about 4 years.  never been in one though.

VR4 here also.  When I last glanced at speed, I was 128, and I pushed it a bit further, but was having a hard time keeping it in one lane at that point.  Oddly 120 WAS smooth in that car.  But 130ish was all over the road.  God bless demo rides at dealerships.

Once on the back of a yamaha FZR motorcycle my buddy was driving at 110mph ish I learned a valuable lesson: Do NOT sit straight up.  The wind caught me and I was airborn for a moment.  I JUST barely was able to grab my friends jacket and stay on.  Almost pulled us both off the bike.  Heh. Lute was durn near a skid mark (smear) on that one.  Still can vividly remember that split second of being airborn.  Durn near pissed myself.

146 mph (235 km/h) in a Peugeot 406 3L V6 on the tachometer.

It must have been around 130 mph real groundspeed.

Even on a deserted highway around 3am, it wasn't particularly bright...

155mph in a '95 e36m3 shortly after adding a chip to remove the 139mph sissy governor.  Wife shot the pic, but was too scared to move to much in the seat to take more than one.  The car was rock steady at that speed.

235 Km/h in my Toyota Celica '96 1.8 .... over the red line of the tachometer.

In a friend's car, 250 Km/h in a Mercedes CLK 5.3L (or something similar) Elegance version (and there was still power available, he told me to have gone up to 270, with some more HPs to use).

I am scared to imagine what the Sport version can do.

145 in my seven. solid as a rock too, but my nerves frayed out and i slowed down.

of course all you people do know that speedometers are calibrated to the nth percentage and as you travel faster, they become more inaccurate, right? (most likely showing a speed faster then you are really going) i think at 140 or so it could be up to 10mph off or so

122 mph indicated on a '71 Kawasaki Mach III around I-435. I think the speedo was optimistic though, maybe by as much as 8-10 mph.

After a while, I started thinking about the front tire hitting a big chuckhole and slowed down.

Yep, so I used the Indicated Ground Speed note. :)

Anyway, it depends on the type/brand/range on your speedmeter.

They seem to be more precise in the middle range, having a greater percent of error as you go close to the max showed speed.

Some of the old Fiat (italian brand) speedmeters had an error of 20/30 Km/h at 120-130 km/h.

Some of the new (japan and german) have a precision near the 5% at high speed.

As an example, I was going with a group of friends to a kart circuit, with 2 machines, my Celica, a friend's Skoda Turbo-diesel.

We were going... ehm... a little bit fast.

I reached and mantained a speed of 210 km/h, with my friend losing contact and space around 190 km/h.
When we arrived to destination, He told me that He saw me going away, when he reached 210, and cannot acelerate more.
This means a solid 20 km/h difference in our readings.

N.B.

I ask:

If you change your tyres with others of less diameter (shoulder?), and have your speedmeter taking it's measure out of the gearbox, or the axis revolutions, have you just messed up the speed readings?

It is set to calculate basing on a specific diameter of the wheels, so changing it will generate an error?

if you change your tires to ones with less diameter then the originals, then they will make more revolutions per distance then stock which will indicate a higher speed then you are going. if the tires are bigger then stock, then your speedometer will indicate a lower reading. not sure of the % difference though.

My own street car past 125mph don't know actual speed since police radar then only went to 125mph  (70's) Car was a 1972 monte carlo 454 , holy 6pack, American auto tranny( was automatic you shifted gears by let up gas )  525hp, magna grip L50 15's rear d70 13's front. Had clorox feeder to back tires and flash paper in side pipes for show. Ended up selling car to buy my first house.

Fast i've driven was 202 mph in a vector  in the early 80's. WE were doing a Message board Sign for customer and he had 2 Vectors. He let  us drive on Runway at his local airport.

In one of my 68 GTOs the one with the 6 speed I sold Laz, I did 120 plus on 880. I was in 6th, and was about 3500 RPM and it was still pulling like mad, when I backed down, I had pegged the speedo for some time accelerating the whole time.

Car seemed fine but there was just slight to many cars out for me to push it anymore.

That car rocked. To bad I cracked the frame or I would still own it.

147 in a 1986 Honda CRX Si. I have a friend who is a state trooper who clocked me at 130 when I passed him another night drag racing a then brand new 300ZX. Both times were on Hwy 80 headed west out of Selma, AL.

There is a straight section of the road that didn't have traffic signals on it then and we would start the race from a light on the edge of town and the stop point was a long sweeping right hand turn just about three miles away. He got the jump but I pulled him back in within 3/4 mile from the start.

Stupid is as stupid does and boy I am lucky to be alive.

Car setup was before all the "street racing" mods. I had 14 inch low profile Pirelli tires; ran 100 octane (it was cheap then around $1.30 a gallon) and had an air scoop of sorts that direct fed air into the filter. This was in 1989/1990 and the car never made it past 1992 when I teed a 1992 Acura that pulled across a red light in front of me.

I have scrap notes of these events I have kept over the past 40+ years.  These are being revealed to all the world all at once, by decade.  My nephew is also a AH2 flyer and he knows who he is, therefore, he is instructed that the following info shall not be mentioned to his mother (my sister) or his aunt (my wife) or his grandfather (my dad)....

1960's  pre teens/in the teens
Bought a minibike.  Removed the governor on the Brigg's and Stratton 4 Hp.  I could wind that eng up until it was self limiting when the valves would start floating.  32 mph as measured by the older boys who had them 80 cc monster mc's with a speedo.  I had the fastest one within a 6 house radius.  No brakes so Mom was continuosly po'd cuz I could wear off the bottom of a new pair of shoes in a week.

1970's  (end of the teens)
    1969 Ford 4 door Custom 302 Windsor 2bbl
110+mph  ..returning form work on Old LakeShore Road with all 4 windows open.  Head liner crashed down at 110 and hit me on top of my head.  Slowed down with a ent neck and pushed it back up.  Drove home and asked my Dad how come roof fell down when I was driving.  He explained the theory of how air traveling at a high rate of speed past a hole creates a vacuum. Then asked how fast was I going.  I don't remember having the privelage of driving anything for 2 weeks after that.

1980's  (graduate college get job and have a little $)
My first bike... Suzuki GS550ES..124 mph  wide flat open           14,100 rpm on LakeView Rd NY.  Let off throttle and sat up on bike.  To this day I have NO idea how I stayed on the bike.  I remember only hanging on by about 2 fingertips of each hand after hitting the air flow.

145+ in a race prepped Porsche 914 6 cylinder open top at an SCCA event at Road America, Elkhart Lake WI.  I wasn't driving I was riding.  The car had nothing down low in the rpm but once it came up on the cams at 6000 it set yur helmet back into the seat.  It could go around corners on rails.

1990's were slower for oppurtunities.  Got married had kids.
131 mph in a 1985 Buick GN.  My factory manuals said it was chip limited to 129 mph.  After installing a new replacement turbo I took it for a test run on Rt 481 Fulton NY.  13 psi boost for about a minute got me the 131 but I hadn't adjusted the waste correctly and something clearly wasn't right.  Never tried it again.

2000's
Went to a party and a friend of my wife's boy friend kept blatting over and over about how fast his Stage 5 modified Yamaha V-Max was.  OK OK so I told him I would take it for a ride.  Downshifting at 125 mph , passin cars and hitting 132 mph with A GEAR LEFT to upshift on rt 481.  Instant thoughts of how I could end up in jail for this -  or get killed by a chipmunk resorted me to the 55mph ride back.  He was right, I believe him.  I aint doing it again.
Somewhat routinely take the 94 and 04 Arctic Cats for winter rides.   Been 111 speedo/110 GPS on the 04 and just touching 115 mph on the 94.

On my Honda 1800 VTX, I hit about 110, no windshield or fairing.....cruiser type bike.... felt like I was holding on for dear life in that airflow.

Used to think it funny that you could go out on a bike in 30 - 40 degree temps, be cold when going slow then near breaking a sweat once you got up around 120. We never settled on if it was due to nerves or friction from the air.
