1,189 lbs Blue Marlin caught (http://www.theroyalgazette.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040706/SPORT/107060017)

I wish they had a picture of it to show you but the fish was caught off Bermuda this weekend.  The guy who caught it won $300,000.

Sad in a way that they landed it....they just took a huge bite out of the gene pool of Marlins around here.  But, for 300k I would have probably insisted on landing it too.

1,100 pounds? The worm must have looked like an anaconda.

400 fathoms of water?  I'm surprised they didn't hook a submarine!

Aren't marlin supposed to be high in mercury like most other large predatory fish?

No idea Gofaster.

I doubt they will eat any of the meat anyway...that baby is off to the taxidermist.  (I don't think they stuff the actual fish, but instead make molds of it....but regardless, to try and keep it pristine and get the meat out of it would be pretty tough.)

No mercury in Billfish, and it is delectable-and you suck if you kill one to eat it.  2400 feet is pretty deep, and I don't have the charts for the area, but I will assume there are some pretty sharp rises in the immediate area.  I wouldn't be surprised if they caught a 2,000# mamma-blue in that area; they are there.

BTW, when I was fishing the tourny circuit, most of the tournaments had prize pools over well over a half a mil, with at least 2 going over 1 million bucks, back in the early 80's when a million dollars was worth something.  Never did win one, though, although we placed in the money a couple of times.

edit-here are some pics of that size fish:

Lizking, that's great, thanks.

I went to school with the Captain, Andrew Dias, second from right in the picture.  Good guy.
