Hi all.....
I haven't been back here in a while, but I notice not much has changed except Pyro is now locking some of the more inappropriate discussions. <S> Pyro....
At least you still haven't inherited Field Marshall -bobn-, or some other dysfunctional character called "avenger" who seems to be frequenting AGW and the WWIIOL BBS's lately. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Cross your fingers. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Anyway, since I've been spending a lot more time enjoying Aces High as opposed to playing the BBS control game, I've discovered some real golden nuggets about Aces High, that some of you may not have tried as yet. I never realized that the Head to Head function of AH was so powerful and designed as a menu driven system. It's an excellent software design and I'd like to <salute> HT for the elegance and ease with which he implemented it. Besides permitting a HOST to set up an arena for up to 8 players, it permits the hosting player to set all of the various field, plane and arena in-game parameters just as a CM (Community Manager) would do. The really nice feature is that the HOST can use any custom terrain such as Luzon and if others join, it automatically downloads it to them in the same fashion as the main AH server would do.
If you choose Head to Head when you start up Aces High, you get the option to pick from a menu which displays ALL of the current on-line custom arenas that any players have set-up, or select HOST and set-up your own arena that will now display as being available for others to join. All in all, a fabulous environment and a feature for Aces High that I've really been enjoying a lot. I had always thought it was like the old WB Head to Head, but this is far superior to that capability.
I've been hosting some early war plan sets lately with just two sides and single planes. For example, Spit 5 versus 109f and F4U-1D versus A6M5b. These have made for some great 1vs1 up to 4vs4 engagements using RW. I've also noticed that there are some really good virtual pilots who log on to these Head to Head servers, perhaps some old WB or AW vets. So, if you find yourself on any day getting bored with quaking around the MA, choose the head to head menu option and select a game.
If most of you were already aware of this great Aces High feature, I apologize for this message, as I wasn't until I got my head out of here and into the actual game more.
A few caveats. First, RW doesn't work via channel selection with Head to Head, but you can use it just like you used to with older versions of AH or WB. Second, be careful with virus invasiveness if you HOST. I've picked up two of them in the last few weeks and until using the AH Head to Head HOST, I'd never experienced any of them on our in-home four P3 systems, Linksys Router and a Cable modem network. I used to turn off my Norton Symantec Antivirus 2001 and BlackIce Defender programs to increase FPS when I used AH on-line, but I now leave them turned ON when I HOST only, which seems to have blocked the Trojan planters. Finally, there's no documentation that I can find on using the arena and field settings, so it's an OJT "on job training" learning curve. I hope that there are DOCS out there somewhere that I've missed, or that someone is writing this stuff up. If not, feel free to send me an email and I'll try to help you with the settings that I've become familiar with.
Hitech ! One feature that would be really helpful for this environment would be the ability to display a TEXT file as AH does when you enter the on-line training arena. It would be real handy to be able to display for new people logging in, what the various planes in use are, fields being utilized and other important arena settings. It would save a LOT of typing to every new guy who joins. Thanks....and again, great job on this function.
Regards,
Badger

Thanks Badger. I'm completely, completely clue-less when it comes to H2H and yet I've told friends who want to try it when they can to look me up to see what AH is all about. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
I'm starting a H2H folder now.

Its different alright. Had a 17 kill sorti going yesterday, in a spit 5, before I ran out of gas. Still had 1000 rounds of ammo left (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

ahhhhh easymo..... <S>
You've got to stop picking on the newbies..... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Look for an on-line flyer named SKurj on Head to Head. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Then come back and post your score. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
His ACM is amazing.....
Spit 5 .... yuchhh! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) hehe

hehe I think my record is about 13 or 14 kills in H2H before my wife called me away and my poor, unmanned plane smacked a mountain.

Yes....an excellent design...
No need to know IP addresses and all of that other nonsense....
Just select Head to Head at Main Menu, then pick any available game you wish to join.

Was just wondering. A new person signing up for H2H has to open an account, or sign up for his free 2 week trial? or how does that work? I have a buddy I am trying to get to try AH out but he has never flown a flight sim before, so I wanted to play around with him in H2H for a while before he starts his 2 week trial, otherwise I fear he may find it too difficult and quit before he realises how much fun it is.
-
Could'nt agree more Badger. Now with the Luzon terrain H2H has become VERY cool!
As the endless FFA can become a drag, some hosts such as Badger and Snoopi have set up great historical/team conflicts.
Also agree that there are some VERY fine sticks lurking!EZ and DMF,Cobraj, the Wildcards squad and MANY other fierce competitors make H2H extremely challenging.
Highly recommend a good H2H session to all.

Signed off on my AH account for 90 days...wife,kids,horses,dogs,rats (yes rats),fish, chicken and all other life forms within 100 yds of me and puter were in a life threatening enviornment (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). Anyway would love to keep my hand in at least a little while I decompress. Can you still play H2H on net or do I need to wait till I re-up?

Any commands you wanna know just ask...
Hmmm....A doc file sounds good.... maybe when I get some time. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
The Text file on entry into the H2H host would be great. Either Pyro or HT said that this was gonna be a feature in future versions..mind you this was stated a couple versions ago. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
Rosco:
Unless things have changed....
When you sign up and get your password, the 2 week trial starts then. It's best that he fly the 2 week trial then fly "always free" H2H. If he misses the 2 weeks without entering the Main Arena then he'll get stuck with a NewU### "generated" ID that is awful.
Yeah..would be nice for some to try H2H first. The best thing for him to do is seek out a Trainer right away. Then fly with friends in the MA that can help out and protect his butt.
2 week trial during 2 week holiday is the best ! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) (Lock the door, order pizza, make LOTS of coffee and fly for 336 Hours straight)

Well, it's not really amazing, but i did try HTH this week.
I like the new maps, and constant dogfights. Kinda like Quake, a real frag O'rama. You kill, they launched pissed, off a cliff, and kill you etc.. Fast and fun for a bit definatley.
Its no doubt a real good gunnery training format, as the MA models real strat, time, distance and position TOO well for a fast learning experience, as it should.
Still, I hope the freebee crowd likes the results, as it's my $30/month to HTC that helps in developing the sim. Sure wish ya all would pay though, I see 3 more guys on payroll developing the sim,not answering questions like "Hey, in free HTH, could you add this...?etc.."
-
One thing that we still need for scenarios and h2h is the option to turn off icons for the arena .

Thank you Snoopi.... much appreciated .... <S>
I do have a lot of questions, so could you send me your email address on private so we don't bother the good folks on here.

Hi Creamo.... <S>
You're missing the point, but who said AME's had to be marketing guys as well. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
This Head to Head environment and set of related application tools, is one of the best business development opportunities HTC has available to increase paying customer head count. Unfortunately, they're not currently maximizing it well, either on the Internet in general, or by adding some simple innovations tied to the two week trial that would make it a tremendous drawing card to go monthly pay for play.
Anyway, been there, done that and have all the tee-shirts from these kinds of discussions, so I have no interest in chasing that topic further with this thread. I'd be happy to discuss it off-line in private email, with you, but I really don't think you'd be all that interested as it wasn't really the point of your original message, was it? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
For the benefit of others though, I did want everyone to realize what was perhaps not obvious about it's (HtoH) potential.
As far as AH quake goes, I guess you must have picked a few of those arenas that someone had set-up, complete with outside views for fighters, ammo loads 10x greater than normal etc. Yup, there sure are those if you're into that kind of thing, but I get enough of that in the MA. If you check frequently, you'll find some really nice Historical plane set-ups using Vermillion's outstanding Mediterranean or 10bears Luzon terrain, which still needs some work (bumpy runways), but has incredible potential. <S> to both these guys for their efforts. They also usually have arena settings that require the highest SA possible with AH, with full realism fuel and ammo loads. Anyway, select one of those and let's meet with a classic 109f versus Spit 5 fur ball over the MED, or perhaps the F4U-1d versus A65Mb in Luzon.

Badger

ps. Suave.... you are absolutely correct about icons, but I suspect that if it could be done, HT would have done it by now as a CM option command. I'm guessing, but I think he's painted in a corner with some hard coding that prohibits doing this. It's too bad, as it would deal with a large issue, perhaps not for a lot, but at least amongst an entire demographic of AH players.

I would guess I spend about 30% of my time in HTH, once, a fellow had 'spun a web' in a tank terrain, when you spawned at the field opposing him (his enemy field) you would die upon spawning, really strange way of getting kills considering he was at least 4 miles away (he didn't fire any shots, he just had it set up some way that you would die instantly) I guess some folks will do anything for a kill (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
Wasn't me eye, I'm guessing I'll need to sign up again to enable the H2H feature. Guess it'll have to wait a bit till I'm ready to venture forth again.
Hope all's well

Maybe they should charge you for the BBS if you won't pay for AH account Badger. It your favorite part of the game anyways and I bet they could get at least $9.95/month out of you. If you quit the BBS again though, just like the MA, they should not reserve your callsign, heh.

Creamo.
Badger is in the MA.
Find something else to bother him about.
-
Also, creamo, give up on the poor boy bit too, it won't fly either.

Hi creamo.. <S>
I would appreciate if you went back and read my first message again, slower and with more understanding.
I haven't actively participated on here in almost a month, except perhaps for the odd short <S> message (you should try a few of those). You've helped me remember why..... thank you. With almost 500 quality posts in just 9 months, you might want to consider a break from the BBS as well, it might do wonders for you. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
I posted this thread to give everyone positive feedback on HTC's design and implementation of an outstanding Head to Head 8 man arena system, superior to anything their competition has at the moment. As usual, you wish to turn it into some form of personality contest like peanoodles in heat. It's a shame you waste so much time and enthusiasm, concentrating on the glass being half empty rather than half full.
Anyway, I have no idea where you gathered I had quit AH and was using the Head to Head as some freebie treat. I pay and play AH on-line, including at times, the less than stellar (IMHO) MA designed for the masses. My preferences when available are historical scenarios and now, the recently discovered excellent tools provided by HTC to set up some great 4 on 4 match ups using those plane sets. Again, that was the purpose of my post, not to provide you with narcissistic entertainment.
I really hope your outlook on life improves with age and maturity. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Now, back to playing the game again.... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Yup..Humble you have to re-register.
But you can sign up and fly for free (in H2H) as long as you don't give your billing info.
Then, when you are ready to start paying again, just enter the billing info...pick an I.D. and your are away to the races.

I haave a tech question. I seldom host anymore, unless its to put an arena ive built into the works. Ive found that if I do, I cant play. FR go,s to hell and I get freeze ups. To make matters worse I seem to provide great connects to the people im hosting.Bad combination (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif). Im guessing it is my somewhat dated CPU (300a OC,ed to 450). What is the minmum to host in a stable arena, would you say?
-
Hblair, you should lisyen to Pongo. I'm just giving Badger ammo to write a long sappy thesis on the everything from how HTC should invest the companies stocks, to the how I should grow in my personal life and innerself. He gets to wow Ping with the thesaurus layden BBS chapters, and I get to laugh at him wasting his time scribbling out the calculations of how many posts per months online I have. See, all is good. And I was lulled into thinking he was a freebee player cuz I mixed up the several MA complaints, and the quitting the BBS as a going to HTH only. My baddy.

Easymo:
I host fairly often as you know.
My Specs:
Pentium2-266 (Overclocked to 300mhz)
64M of ram
8meg AGP vid card with Permedia2 chipset
(overclocked)
Win98 with 98Lite professional
(makes it win98 without the extra "junk")
Suncom USB stick
keyboard for rudder and throttle
Cable modem
My framerate stays the same, hosting or not.
(avg. 15fps)
Recently, I have experienced very few freezeups when a new player "joins".
To run Aces High:
-I make sure my hard drive is defragmented.
-I reboot the computer
-I "kill" all tasks except "explorer" and "systray"
Freezeups do happen, but it when it does my host usually crashes and when I re-start I usually discover that most of the other hosts have "dissappeared" too.
Why this happens...who knows?
