Well, I am new to AH2, and like many others I have not read
the help files etc. and just wanted to jump into playing this game.
I went to the start screen and saw a list of Squadrons out there
and was repeatedly refused an invite. I did finally get an invite, but found myself in a tank..which is not what i came to this game to primarily play. Are the people in this game very "click" oriented
where they are picky about who they want with them?
I will be on tonight to be target practice for you veterans so look for me..thats is, if I can actually get into a squad. Wish they
allowed you to go in solo. I am no rookie to combat flight sims, but from what Ive played offline in AH2 there is sure a learning curve for the FM's.
-
Ohio, you do not have to be in a squad to play online in this sim.
There are many "lone wolf players" out there.
Just jump on into the game and kill anything that's red and moves.
Your allies will show as green icons, your available fields will show as green icons as well.
As far as the FM goes, there is a steep learning curve (as there is for the rest of the sim as well).
Have you been into the training arena yet?
If not, I highly recommend getting some 1 on 1 with a trainer, or someone who has been around awhile to show you the ropes.
If you see me on line at any time feel free to give me a holler. I am always glad to help.
I fly for the Bishops, and my in game handle is same as my BBS handle.
Cheers,
RTR

You dont have to be in a squadron to play at all.
If you are clicking on the join player button without first asking that player if you can. Then you are going to get a lot of refusals if not rude comments.
The reason for this is when you click that join button it pops a dialogue window up in the middle of the screen of the person you wish to join obscuring their view.
If you really were trying to join a squad be aware not all squads accept players just because they want in.
Some run a specific quota and will not accept anybody once that number is reached.
And i think you meant clique oriented not "click".
-
I believe the number is 32 for a squad.... After that they CANNOT accept any others....
But the join command is not for a squad but to join someone plane.... Have to ask first... Many...most will accept if you ask first.... Feel free to join me anytime..... At least you'll qualify for jump pay and parachute wings.....
-
There is no reason you can't go solo for a while without a squad. You need not rush into trying to get into a squad and certainly consider which squad you join. It is important to find a group of players that you "fit" in with in terms of character, interests, and playing times/frequency. Often, new squads form initially in the Training Arena so there are usually lots of people looking for new squaddies in there... again, you don't need to join one though.
If you want some squad-like experience though, join a mission and fly with a group of people that way. That will give you a feel for it and help introduce you to new players (who might invite you).
Generally, reading the Help files, and visiting a couple of helpful websites (like http://www.netaces.org) is a good place to start with AH. Spend some time in the Training Arena and download a couple of items (like a key mapping card) so you aren't asking "how do I lower my landing gear" type questions. People tend not to have the patience in the MA for that type of question where you could have spent 2 seconds reading to find out yourself.... asking those types of questions tends to get you unreliable responses (ie, bad advice) in the MA as often as good advice. Also, do a couple of quick searches in this forum for advice to new players, there have been a number of excellent threads in the past that will help out.
-
I realize my questions were premature and I should read up more about the game before I played, but I only had ten minutes
of time to play before I had to logoff. I am now at work and thought I'd ask ya here.
I didn't see anything that mentioned different arena's so I'll go hunting for that tonight. I won't need alot of training in ACM..
just learning the FM's and HOW i can adjust my ACm knowledge to
the capability of the plane.
Thanks for the replies!

Good you asked in here though, the MA advice can be a bit "poor" at times.
There are a few arenas to consider, the MA (Main Arena) is the primary game. The TA (Training Arena) is where you can go to practice (the lethality of guns is set to zero) or just learn things. The DA (Dueling Arena) is just that, a place to go and duel people if you want. Typically you'd arrange that in some other arena and agree to meet in the DA. There is also the CT (Combat Theatre) that runs special setup, usually based on historical aircraft matchups or geographic locations (where in the MA you can fight P-51 vs P51 in the CT that wouldn't happen).
the netaces website is pretty good, you can also check out my website:
Soda's aircraft evaluations (http://www.telusplanet.net/~dsoder/models)
It gives aircraft comparison and tips/tricks info. It's based on AH1 data but I'm converting it to AH2 (and mostly it's still the same). That'll give you some background on how aircraft in AH tend to react (vs what is argued in historical comparisons). The biggest thing to master in AH tends to be the views system and Situational Awareness, that's what really separates people. the base ACM stuff is pretty easy but it's the knowing when/why to use any maneuver that's important.
-
The "join" command (button) on the roster is used to become a gunner or observer on someone elses vehicle.
If I read this right, you thought "join" meant joining a squadron. Thats why you ended up in a tank. You joined with another person who was in a tank as an observer/gunner.
Welcome to the game!

Oh great now our secret is out, well I guess its time to learn how to really fight lol.
Ohio, dont worry about the squad thing right away and trust me there are alot of squads looking for members, once you fly a number of times people will start to recognize you and will invite you to join them, Good luck.

It's nice to get new guys in the game that are good at flight sims.

Watch out for this guy (he's waving a carrot) :D

Thanks for the advice. I did go in and used the trainer area.
alot of nice guys in there and very helpful (Thanks Fuzeman!)
I also went in the MA to become dead-meat for the dang
"vulchers" heh. Spent the night dying, and yes, that got to me,
but I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. I DO certainly love
the voice radio..nice perk. Dunno how many times i got bounced
in AW while typing to someone :) Heh, went over what appeared
to be a clear airfield just to find a nice ACK round explode in front of me and blew an engine as a result..never saw that comin..is there a certain height you have to be before an ACK gun is tagged with a red icon, or did I possibly get nailed by an AI?
-
Hi Ohio, I did send you an e-mail, did you receive it?
Field aaa guns never get the red icon. We have auto aaa guns and some that can be manned. You will see tracers when the auto aaa fires. However, you will NOT see tracers from any manned gun position unless that has been changed in AH2.
Come to think of it, I recall seeing man aaa tracers in the TA at the Training field so this may have changed.
The only AI online is the auto-aaa at fields and carriers and the pilots of the bomber drones. Drone pilots only and no Otto the autogunner in bombers.
-
ack guns dont have red icons, you have to go down close and straff them. you probably got hit with puffy ack, which fires at targets over 3k and seems to be rather deadly recently. especially around fleets. takes a week or so to learn where you should up form and where you should fly to, dying is part of the learning curve ;)

To ease your frustration, don't try to up at a field that is being vultched. Find other areas that aren't so congested with enemies and look for engagments there.
Never assume that an airfield is clear of ack. Fly the perimeter and watch for the ack tracers and/or listen to vox. Most will report that all ack is down or up. Also, there are no icons for field ack. You have to learn to recognize the concrete pads that they sit on and adjust your attack on the field accordingly.

The assertion that Rooks dominate due to numerical and altitude advantage cannot be argued..........To whit:
All Rooks have two accounts....
One account will be engaged in the fight (when the odds are 3:1 or better) and the other account is climbing out....
This way you have half the waiting time, since getting to 30,000 feet takes time. :) Also, by definition, we will have twice as many logged in as we otherwise would.
Just kidding, in case you are a newbie.

Ya, Fuze..I got your email and just sent ya a reply :) by the
way..this email address is my email at work..wish I wasn't here
so I could go back into AH. Ya It was the puffs black smoke that
took me out. Still flyable, but couldn't see thru all the oil left on my windscreen heh
-
Ohio your going about this the wrong way.... Being nice and polite.... Your not going to fit in at all..... What you need to do is go to the MA and ask
How do I put my gear down.... How do I take off
Write a post saying;
How come I can't hit anything Skuzzy....
Why isn't this or that explained somewhere
Need to perk the spit..LA7 etc.
After doing all the above you will be ingratiated into the fraternity... And will get much more interesting responses..
Remember at all times that this game sucks... And I should know I been playing? for 5 years now....
Oh... And don't forget to say that anyone who kills you is cheating...
Add names to your post like "Rude""Shane""Fuse" and especially "Fester"
......you'll be famous by Friday....

Yikes :) I'm moving up in the world.... or is that down?

Forgot to mention:
Keep asking Hitech when the new planes,Terrains, patch etc. will be out.. Then ask when did two weeks become a month
Ask a question in the MA and when someone (which they will) tells you to read the manual tell them you would but your blind. If they then try to help ignore them cause their idiots.....
-
Ohio330 if you remember one thing remember this, if you ask a question and someone replies with press Alt. F4, dont do it, it will exit the game.
-
Ohio330, to avoid spam at work I'll post it here.
I haven't received your e-mail yet although the net had a problem today per Skuzzy. I'll keep looking though. I am interested in your reply.

Welcome to AH2 Ohio.
As many have said, flying in a squad isn't a requirement for having fun or learning the ropes. OTOH flying with a wingman and developing wingman tactics/strategies can keep you alive a lot longer. Get in one plane and fly it till you know its strenghts and weaknesses. While doing that try to wing up with other solo flyers you encounter. Soon enough you'll meet someone you can team up with.
Squads have a way of finding you. Hang in there and enjoy the ride. Meanwhile, if you have questions...this is the place to ask.

There's really not much for me to say, is there?

Thanks for all the advice guys...too bad I only access this during the week...i did get roped into the ALT-F4 thing this weekend..so THATS what happened heh?
Fuze, I wanted to say a few things in a private e-mail because
I wanted to be honest about my feelings for this game and what has been happening in the week I've been playing, but I'll keep it "nice" since it's a public board.
On Saturday I was on and was gunning at a field and 3 fat juicy
B-17's went overhead, and i quickly made dinner on those birds.
Some (remove expletitive) came on vox to say not to shoot at them because he is is 17 pilot and respects the enemy 17's. I dared to question this "respect" and now I have found approx. 5 people on vox, and some more in text, taking annoying pot shots at me.
Secondly, and this isn't a ***** about the game itself..more a reflection of what I'm used to.. The planes in this game simply fly like bricks (call it realism, I'll respect that). In this sense, I am
truely worse than a newb to this game because I now have to unlearn what I've learned before. Im constantly finding myself
pushing these birds too hard..leaving me in a state of constant
low "E" and vulnerable. I managed to get an assist kill (heh, after 3 minutes of dogfighting) just to find out no points are awarded for assists.
I sure I can overcome how to handle the planes eventually, Fuze, but at this time I do not have the ability to be given the honor of joining your squad. I am not sure I can overcome the snide remarks, though. I am going to finish out my one week left, and if they don't subside, I will probably not subscribe. If I do
subscribe, I will just reapply, and hope the new account isn't with the Knights ( and make my sole goal to take out Knight B-17's!! heh)
-
You can change country right away, ahhhh never done that in AH2 but I suppose you do in from the "O'Club".
-
Ohio just to let you know, you can switch to another country, the game doesn't assign you a country other than the 1st visit to the Main Arena. Bring up the clipboard>O Club> change countries.
Once changed, you're there for 12 hrs, I believe.
btw...you're going to find dorks wherever you go :)

Ohio,
I respect your thoughts and [phffft] to the guys who gave you grief. Don't let them cocktail weenies change the way you feel about the game.
One great command is the .squelch [name] one. Peace and quiet in no time flat.
Shoot me an e-mail PLEASE!
-
oh, I didn't know that. I'll switch countries tonight then. It's just as well. I also started an account with my son and that account was on another country..so we can play together. Heh, I was
on a 5" gun on a carrier and blew this fast incoming P-38 to
pieces.. Only to find who I killed was Ohio 331!!! (my son)..wondered why I heard him screaming in the other room , heh.
-
Fuze.. I sent you an email the other day. Is there another email account I should be sending it to?

That is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard! I think of myself as a B17 pilot, but I also spend a lot of time either in an Ostwind or manning a field gun - and like nothing better than to shoot down a formation of B17s! Hell, I've never heard anything like that before. If it's Red, it's a legitimate target, whatever it is! So ignore the idiots and blast 'em out of the sky! :aok
Oh, and welcome to AH! I sincerely hope you decide to subscribe - and maybe try some of the Special Events once you find your feet (or should that be wings?) :)
-
Either the 'reply to' or fuzeman@hitechcreations.com should work.
I haven't received any though.
to you and your son.
-
Ok, Fuze, I just sent another email to the hightech account you
just gave.
-
Just bear in mind the STEEP learning curve. I came from AW, and considered myself one of the better sticks in that game, and it took me 6mths to get only "decent" in AH.
Also note, if they going on private chan. to say rude things to you, you are probably doing something right. Don't let 'em get ya' down.
Look for me in the TA, (i pop in every day for 'bout hour) and we'll see what we can do about getin' you some kills.
-
Well, I was on all last night, and wasn't harassed at all. Even joined a brand new squad of what appears to be fairly new ppl.
They showed me a thing or two. Flying seems alot more
workable when you actually got guys willing to watch your six or
at least vox ya a 6 call if they arent in a position to help ya.
-
Welcome to AH2 Ohio.
Looks like I'm to late to get you to check out the 54th Screaming Eagles. We fly for the Bishops.
I'm just north of you in Ashtabula county. See ya in the game.
-
welcome to ah Ohio330..I`m a newb also since march, raised in Conneaut, now make GA my home.Hope ya decide to stick around cause there really is a bunch a good people in here...I`m sure that i`ve been cussed at a few times but usually to caught up in the action to pay any attention..Am starting to get all the taletale signs of addiction that I`ve heard others talk about..( there`s a thread or two dedicated to this affliction)....I die more than i`ve killed and am still learning and reading as much as i can, there`s a wealth of info in the community threads, just gotta dig it up..( I can retract my landing gear now..Ha!).....Hang in there and watch your six.....
-
the learning curve is steep indeed. AH has been my first online sim experience... been here since beta tour 1.. which seems like eons ago at this point. I'm still learning new things all these years later. I think a key to lasting enjoyment is to find a group of buddies early they can really ease the growing pains and make your time online a lot more jovial.
