Title: Would you fire him...
Post by: Red Tail 444 on July 09, 2004, 11:32:25 AM
For calling your 6 year old daughter a "stupid, dirty girl," at a televised press conference...

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/07/08/girls.name.ap/index.html

...Or, would you just jump the podium and kick his ass?

Can I do both?

Actually this has been blown way out of proportion. Silly stupid mistake by a silly stupid man. He's sorry!

Neither.  People get too wound up over things they shouldn't.  You can't look at the words, you look at the intent.  He INTENDED to be funny.

I would, however, have spoken to him afterwards and explained the butt kicking he would receive the next time he tried to be funny.

The guy's an idiot with poor judgement, but not maliciously hurtful.

Granted, but on that point, should a silly stupid man be the education czar? I'm not necessarily pining for his ouster, but I'm glad I don't have to deal with it, either.

Are you that petty?

Have you ever uttered a statement where, immediately afterward, you asked yourself "Why in God's name did I say that!?"

I know I have.

Should he be reprimanded?  Certainly.  Should he issue a public apology?  Definitely.

Should he lose his job?  Only if he fails to learn from his mistake.

Brain farts shouldn't get you fired unless they're happening on a regular basis.

Post by: Sandman on July 09, 2004, 12:38:02 PM
Hell... He probably doesn't even need a reprimand at this point. The public attention alone is bad enough. If it makes them feel better, have him perform some act of contrition and move on.

The girl will likely survive.

I try to be funny all the time.  I never had to insult a child....

In all the land, we can't find someone to hold such a position that has the common sense not to do what he did?

Huge deal?   No.   Stupid?   Yes.

I'd fire him.  He will be duly chastened at his next assignment.  No harm done.

I've said stupid things before and will again, though maybe not so stupid as what he said. Does Kalifornia really want someone that careless with their words as Education Secretary?
Title: Would you fire him...
Post by: fuzeman on July 09, 2004, 01:31:06 PM
Doesn't sound like this was a one time thing and he has a history of doing stuff like this. That makes me think he wont learn from this one either. but that's my opinion.
The girl, her mother, him and his staff said the issue is done. Those involved think it's over and now the media has made a circus out of it.

Post by: slimm50 on July 09, 2004, 01:32:48 PM
All the above having been said, the girl's mother, and the girl too, for that matter, have said it's over. So get over it, everybody, and move on: drop it. We all agree, I think, the guy's a moron.

He would have became governor if Davis had not intervened in the Republican primary by attacking him and making sure the nomination went to bumbling Simon.

:rofl  Buffy just can't stop thinking about me :lol

I'm not even in this guy's ballpark in terms of being qualified to be education czar of CA, but I'm a hell of a lot more qualified than you, storch, but thank you for the ringing endorsement :)

You seem to be in the habit of nominating / electing people for appointments in this country that are ill suited for the position in question given their political, social, or intellectual skill set. You may want to seek some prefessional help for that.

On second thought, decline professional help. I rather enjoy tearing your adolescent replies to pieces.

Sucker.

Democratic state Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, who had scheduled a protest by civil rights organizations, canceled the demonstration after an apparent mix-up over the girl's racial background.

Dymally was quoted in the San Jose Mercury News Thursday saying the child was "a little African-American girl. Would he (Riordan) have done that to a white girl?"

The girl is white, with blonde hair.

"Race is not a factor in this issue," Dymally said in Thursday's statement, adding that Riordan had apologized a second time. "It is time for us to move on."

"The girl's mother, Trinity Lila of Goleta, said her daughter was fine, and she considered the issue over.

"Obviously it hurt her feelings, but she didn't take it personally. She knew he was wrong and she let it go," Lila said. "I'm not going to sue them for therapy bills."

"He's already apologized repeatedly," Lila added. Although Riordan's office has tried to contact her, "I don't see what else is to be done.""

This, however, is refreshing.

No reason for you to care anymore... The family seems to have accepted his apology...

Gee,  can the girl's mother sue them because they were all ready to support her until they found out she was a cracker?  Shouldn't they be calling for that ASSemblyman's resignation for his shunning on this girl based solely on the color of her skin?

A day later, Riordan issued a statement that said he "teased" the girl. "I immediately apologized to her, and I want to do so again for the misunderstanding," Riordan said.

I thaught you guys were big on appologies.....or is it cause he might be a republican?

AND WOW the girl is white so call off the dogs he may not be a racist....what would it matter if she was black....nothing in there sudgests one race or the other.  I call my kids monkeys all time...I call a black kid the same....I'm now a racist biggot because of what it MAY imply

CMON this is dumb time to move on.

had I been standing there when he said it to one of my kids I'd have 'got his attention in a physical sort of way'.

once he apologized it's over though, people are way too thin skinned.

I suspect it would be a much bigger deal had she not been white.  it's interesting that Dymally was able to wonder if the comment would have been made if she were white.  yet, upon finding that she was, he was unable to take the next step and wonder if he'd have even cared enough to make a comment on the statement himself, had he known she was white.

Republicans are good at insensitive remarks. Clayton Williams was the 1990 Texas GOP gubernatorial candidate.  He was leading Democrat Ann Richards in the polls, but then he spoke the words that ultimately cost him the governor's race.

Talking to reporters about the weather, he joked that bad weather is like rape:  "as long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." Nothing else he said throughout the rest of the campaign mattered.

"Dick" Riordan is just doing what comes natural.

that's what I saw exactly. Very stupid and rude but by no means malicious.

An apology is all that's required.

Dearest Buffy wannabe,

"i hear that those who hear something and take it as fact without having any experience or insight into what they are hearing are merely trying to reinforce their own delusions or opinions upon which they have already made decisions about, and are grasping for evidence to reinforce their unsubstantiated beliefs that in essense have no substance whatsoever." -Citabria
