This one still reigns, in my book
Sam (http://www.samadams.com/beer/styles/boston_lager.html)
Of course, I've only been drinking legally for a few years.
Thoughts?
-
You're off to a good start. :)
Try some of the heavy stuff too. Guinness is also tasty.
-
have you had canadian beer?
if so, did you like it?
-
I like Sam and I like Guiness also. Hell I dont think I have ever met a beer I didnt like. Couple of weeks ago a bar here in Dallas had halfyards of Bass on special for $5. It was great....the freshest smelling Bass ale I have ever had. Usually you get it here and its old and lifeless and you cant smell the hops hardly at all.

Guinness is good stuff. Solidifies in your intestines but what the hell.
However, we're looking at American beers here.
If the topic was any beer, worldwide, I wouldn't even know where to begin.
I do like Red Stripe. Becks is decent.
Pretty much over Heineken.
Whatever it is, I'm sure it's german though.

I do like some canadian beers.
A couple years ago I was snowboarding out at Whistler. I was underage by US standards but was legal up there. Some of the strongest stuff I've ever seen.
Can't say I remember too much about taste though.
-
I bleed red white and blue but as a whole American beers sorta suck (notable micros notwithstanding). My favorite brew of em all is Chimay Grand Reserve.
-
Henry Weinhart's Pale Ale was a favorite of mine when I was in California, no more expensive than the "macro brews" but considerably better, IMHO.
Are we talking "American Beers" or "US Beers"? I'm really into Red Stripe (From Jamaica) these days.
[Edit] Oops, noticed you already mentioned Red Stripe... Good on ya!

I drank enough Weinhardt's to fill a pool during the years I lived in Cali. those were the days. Good stuff, considering the price.

Since I was an Undergrad at the time, I was definately considering the price lol. I was just happy when I wasn't drinking Mad Dog, or Natural Ice :p
The local hooch here in Virginia isn't Bad.

Saint Arnold's Brewery here in Houston makes some great brews. My favourite is the Brown. Damn fine beer. Saint Arnold's Beer (http://www.saintarnold.com/)
-
Rolling Rock stands at the top for me... then its off to the German beers
-
Keep them comming! I need to print this list if I ever manage to be a beer-tour tourist one day (I'm sure that there's a website on that).
Chimay american? I don't think so. We do export a beer called "Bush beer (http://www.br-dubuisson.com/An/index_bush.htm) " though.

Absolutely not, I didn't even try to make it seem so. There are many fine Amercian microbrews that can match the fine trappist elixirs from Belgium/Luxembourg/France, but they cost as much as Chimay. Thats why I have resorted to making my own ales in the trappist traditions (well sort of, I don't have oak casks and all that :)), that way i get top quality brew at Anheiser prices (or less).

Still to find an American beer that can rival any European ones in terms of strength. Don't mention imports, even they are weaker that their Europpean counterparts.

The reason we export Fosters is because no one here will drink it.
Not all Aussie beer is Fosters.
It was a joke btw, ya moron.

lol, I was thinking the same thing. I guess we'll have to know what is meant by "strength"

Can't wait to taste that Edbert :)
-
Why is it that these beer discussions always revert to alcohol strength? It ain't all about the alcohol. I mean sure when you are in high school maybe that matters, but I have come to appreciate the finer points of beer consumption and production. I enjoy the spiciness of the hops and the way it balances with the sweetness of the malt. I guess once you grow up and realize that drinking isn't all about getting smashed all the time then you can truly appreciate beer and the folks that make it a labor of love to produce fine micro-brewed beer here in the states.

Um, Considering Funked was listing possibly the worst tasting examples of piss poor alcohol, I'm pretty sure the three of us are on the same page (not that that has stopped me from drinking any of the above mentioned swills lol).

Neither do I; That's simpy too good to be an American beer...
To have a nice, easy evening all you need a couple bottles of Chimay, one large glass (like cognag glass but bigger) and one small "shot" glass for yeast :)

As have I....but I have since graduated past the BudMillerCoors crap that most foreigners consider as the only examples of "American beer."
My comments were more directed at the Canadians who assume that since their beer has more alcohol that it is inherently better than stuff produced in the USA. News flash for ya....American beer isnt all BudMillerCoors crap. That is just mass produced swill to please the masses. I prefer my beer with more taste and complexity not necessarily high alcohol levels. I made a really nice mild ale once that you could die for....it only had about 3.8% alcohol but it was 10 times more flavorful than BudMillerCoors crap.

A friend of mine harvested the yeast from a bottle of Chimay and used it in his own Belgian ale recipe. He won Best of Show in one of the largest single site homebrew competitions in the US here in the Dallas area and got to brew his recipe at a local micro-brewery in a full 30 barrel batch. That was some good stuff.
-
I usually drink mild beers with about 4,7% alc; in stronger lagers the taste of alcohol is too strong for my taste.
Trappist beers are different case: Chimay which has twice as much alc than beers I usually drink is smooth as silk...
Heh I'm quite familiar with Guinness too; a British Jazz-band forced me to drink that at bar in Spain... Cool guys :D

Hmm gotta keep that in mind... :D

Gotta love US beer, where else could you swill the equivalent of 4 pitchers and walk (sort of) home.
-
why is it that this board is so partial to the heavy dark beers?
as far as real domestic American beer......
On a hot day....on the beach....or on a boat....I prefer a cooler filled with ICE COLD Coors Light.
Call me a simpleton I dont care.
I do also like a good Shinerboc every now and then and I guess that's American cause they have a big plant in Texas;)
-
On a hot day I really enjoy

If you find yourselves in Canada, and looking for a good buzz: (6.1% alcohol)

I used to drink it too, because, well, it went down like water(you could drink it all day) But Corona and lime has replaced it, out in the sun you really don't want anything heavy. I like to drink a heavy dark for taste once and awhile and Sam Adams is good to have for yourself and letting guests know you have good taste.

after living in Arizona I have to agree w/ you. On sundays we would go to Mexico just to watch football and drink caronas. Squez a lime in there and add a dash of salt. Carona is not an American beer unless you consider it North american....Its still good though. I dont get into the darks to much though. Except on saint pats day I guess.

My local homebrew shop has 3 or 4 chimay clone recipies. But they are just similar to Chimay. Fact is the particular yeast that they use in Chimay CANNOT be grown by the homebrewer, if you manage to get live yeast from a bottle and reproduce it (not all that hard actually) you've got to realize it is not the primary yeast, they introduce a secondary and common yeast before bottling. The primary yeast that makes Chimay Chimay is long since dead. Those guys brew liquid gold in my opinion, and there's no way they're gonna let their proprietary (and hundreds of years old) yeast get outta there alive :)
I'll also agree with the thoughts about Budmillercoors, not exactly "good" beer in my mind, but If I'm gonna be at the lake or beach slamming beers all day they're the only way to go. I honestly beleive thats what they were made for.

Thank god nobody mentioned that bottled beaver excrement from Colorado....Fat Tire. I've tried all of New Belgium's stuff and it just tastes rancid.
Saint Arnold Christmas Ale and Lawnmower are great when available.

Around here its hard to find any other american beer than Miller and Bud. Both are ok if they are ice cold on a hot summersday. Wish we could get more to try cause we have lots of euro beer. There are some special beer stores that sell beer from all over but they are VERY expencive. :(
-
Hmmm... not a word on Japanese beers yet? I tried Kirin, Asashi, Sapporo they were nice, but I haven't found anything with a bit more spice in it.
Hey Nilsen, my "everyday" beer is Tuborg here in Luxemburg (the local "Bofferding" is terrible).
That being said... I'm going to spend my day in "Ciney" today... there's a monastery over there that brews a fine beer too. Excpect some slurred posts when I come back :D
-
Because of a "beer war" between the largest food chains here, Tuborg is the cheapest beer that one of them offers :) Its good, but i used to drink so much of it when i was young that im fedup with it now im afraid....same with Carlsberg.
Im meeting with a couple of crewmembers form the boat i served with in the navy tonight and we are gonna get drunk the way only sailors can :D Bought a case of beer and 3 bottles of rum....maybe ill take some pictures and post em.

Mate of mine was telling me about a beer they used to get in Vietnam that had opium in it....think he said it was called Mekong Bitter or something.
Not suprisingly, he reckons the stuff was liquid dynamite, garaunteed to lay you out cold for the duration.
Any Vietnam vets, or tourists who have been there, or indeed Vietnamese AHers.....is there such a beer, or was my leg being firmly pulled?

I'm a fan of Kirin Ichiban (as opposed to regular Kirin Lager) but by and large I'm not a big fan of Japanese Beers. I mostly drink them for nastolgic purposes, to transport me back to Japan :)
As for Camelot, I've been there once. Coming from California, with there "no bever and booze in the same club" laws, I was caught off guard lol.

Had the same reaction.
Needless to say, I boozed.

I love how it is somewhat implied that the type of beer you drink-----darker / stronger / bolder / more alcohol / implies your level of manhood. With this, too many microbrewery's have completely taken to the trend and over malted / hopped their beers, and if you didn't like it, well, you were not a man. Now don't get me wrong, when done right they are outstanding. It is too easy to mask a bad beer.
I asked our local brewmaster which beer he was most proud of and his reply was his light beer clone ( every microbrewery will have the light / pilsner style beer for those people who walk in and ask for a bud light) his reason was that there was little room for error. It is so crisp and clean.
Now don't get me wrong, i love dark beer. In my opinion Guinness is the best beer on the planet. Just my opinion on a trend.

Asashi is an excellent beer imo, easily one of the best...great for a real hot day and a barbie....but the problem is it's too bloody expensive here...

Howdy all,
We are lucky enough to have the "Thirsty Dog Brewing Company" not far from here. It's a small company and all of the beers have a dog theme. By far my favorite so far is...
"Old Leg Humper"
and there we have it. my 1st post with my new name... I'm the same old "goaly" but spelled with a "zero". I forgot my original password many beers ago. See ya in the fall when the days are shorter, and the fish stop biting.
